Y The Shalom Lake Norman Festival returns for a third year on Sunday, September 18 from 12 noon-4 PM at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius. The festival is sponsored by the Jewish Council of Lake Norman, which consists of Beth Shalom of Lake Norman, Lake Norman Jewish Congregation, Congregation Emanuel of Statesville, Chavurah, and Hadassah, with support from the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte. The festival promises to be a day of fun for the entire family. Much more has been added to this year’s festival. More entertainment for both adults and children, more ven- dors and more food choices. Featured enter- tainers this year include the Baal Shem Tones - Helene and Michael Kates. A Baal Shem Tones concert is more than great music. For many, it is a spiritual event that stays with them for years. Helene and her husband Michael, the duo’s producer, co- wrote most of their material, a tightly crafted style of pop-influ- enced Americana, which has been described as “100% American and 100% Jewish,” with a powerful spiritual punch that stands out. Batsheva is a singer, song- writer, musician, and comedy writer. She sings in Ladino, Yiddish, Hebrew and English. She is an award winning songwriter and has performed in Israel, Canada, Australia, and the United States. Her “Song of Remembrance” is parto of the official archives of Yad Va Shem, the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority. She is a classically trained musician, studying piano and cello at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She accompanies herself on guitar. Batsheva holds a degree in theater from York University of Toronto. In addition to these great per- formers, there will be a children’s area with performances, magic shows, and crafts. For the shop- per, the shuk area will have ven- dors, who will be selling Judaica from specialty food to art. If parking is full at Ramsey Creek, there is also offsight park- ing with free transportation pro- vided. Please call Stew Eisberg at 516-270-5265 with any ques- tions. Y Shalom Lake Norman Festival The Baal Shem Tones Batsheva By Diana Ades The eleventh year of Camp SOAR (Special Olympics Athletic Retreat) was held at the Levine JCC in June and was enjoyed by 300 athletes. The number of ath- letes was a far cry from the first Camp SOAR in 2001 which only had 54 athletes and 40 volunteers. This year’s Camp had approxi- mately 400 volunteers. The week of June 13, the Camp began with a “slam dunk” presen- tation from Charlotte Bobcats President Fred Whitfield and two of the Bobcats’ star players, DJ Augustine and Stephen Jackson (since traded to Milwaukee). Special Olympics Volunteer Extraordinaire Bob Bowler accepted a check for $10,000 from the Charlotte Bobcats for operat- ing Camp SOAR. Whitfield saw for himself what an amazing job Levine JCC Assistant Executive Director Barry Schumer and Bowler have done with the Camp over the last eleven years. After the presen- tation, Augustine and Jackson spent time playing basketball with the athletes and signed auto- graphs. All week long the athletes enjoyed various sports such as tennis, basketball, bocce, volley- ball, swimming and even bowling. They received basketball pointers from NC State Star David Thompson and enjoyed the star power of veteran college basketball official, Jamie Luckie when he helped out with the soccer activ- ities. Not only did the ath- letes enjoy the sporting activities, they had a great time playing Bingo and doing Arts and Crafts. The final day, like years in the past, all 300 athletes enjoyed a dance, movies, and their favorite: PIZZA! Athlete Kim Jones wrote “thank you for always trying to improve the camp and make us athletes and our surroundings soar higher and higher.” Camp Soar would not be suc- cessful without the wonderful vol- unteers from area schools, corpo- rations, and the Jewish communi- ty. Volunteer Danielle Adler feels volunteering is a life changing experience. “The main factor that brings me back each year is all the huge smiles that spread across campers’ faces each day,” Adler shared. So, 600 PB& J sandwiches, 300 pimento cheese sandwiches, 300 tuna fish sandwiches, 120 pizza pies, and more snacks than you can imagine later, Camp Soar cel- ebrates another successful year. For additional information on the Camp or to volunteer for next year, please contact Barry Schumer at 704-944-6744 or barry.schumer@charlotte jcc.org Y Soaring Through Eleven Years of Smiles A camper and a volunteer are A-OK. B’tzavta, the Hebrew word that means doing things together, per-fectly summarizes this past year’s experience for a group of 15 teensfrom Charlotte and our Partnership 2000 region in Hadera-Eiron,Israel. After an initial introduction through Facebook, the teens metand spent the month of July visiting each other’s communities, partic-ipating in Tikkun Olam projects, and enjoying the hospitality of localfamilies. In Israel, the teens shopped in Tel Aviv and visited historicsites such as the Western Wall and Yad Vashem. After returning toCharlotte, the teens went white water rafting, volunteered to work withOasis senior citizens, baked challahs for JFS, and, of course, spent theday at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The program, which focuses onfostering responsibility and leadership among teens, proved to be aresounding success as the teens engaged in hands-on fundraising andworked together to allocate funds to improve their communities. ByAugust, the teens chose a different Hebrew word to describe

their group – mishpacha, the Hebrew word forfamily.

Your donation will help pay for food, medicine and employment counseling to help families get back on their feet. And it’ll pay for other things you can’t put a price on. Like connecting every generation to Israel and inspiring a lifelong passion for Jewish living. Do a world of good. Make a world of difference.

The Torah begins and ends withacts of tzedakah, caring and lov-ing kindness. – Talmud.

The giving of tzedakah at theNew Year is an important mitzvahand according to Jewish tradition, the spiritual benefit of givingcharity is so great that the giverbenefits even more than the recip-ient. Judaism holds that people inneed have a legal right to food, clothing, and shelter that must behonored by more fortunate people.

By making a donation to theJFS 2011 Friends Campaign, youwill be reaching out to those inneed by providing JFS with themeans to serve the growingdemands in the Charlotte Jewishcommunity and to empower manypeople with the tools andresources to succeed.

Take a look at how your giftcan make a difference in our com-munity:Social Skills Groups for Children

Your gift helps support groupsfor children who struggle withsocial and emotional regulations.JFS completed two cycles of sixweek classes for children ages 8-12 and 12-14. The children whoparticipated in JFS social skillsgroups have shown improvementin making and keeping newfriends, identifying and under-standing their emotions and feel-ings and how it impacts others, and cooperating with adults andpeers. Libby Rains, JFS Childand Adolescent therapist says,

“With the use of hands-on activi-ties, like interactive games, sci-ence experiments, art activitiesand yoga instruction, the childrenand adolescents who have partici-pated in the groups have been ableto practice such skills as problem-solving, initiating and sustainingsocial conversations, understand-ing verbal and non-verbal socialcues, and identifying the emotionsand/or understanding the feelingsof others. Some have even devel-oped connections that have car-ried over outside of our groupactivities, something that has beenpositive for the kids and their fam-ilies.”Love and Logic Classes forParents

Your gift to JFS helps supportprogramming that gives parentsthe building blocks needed to cre-ate children who grow up to beresponsible and successful teensand adults. Through discussion, video clips, handouts, and exercis-es, the course teaches practicalsolutions to everyday issues, suchas getting your child ready forschool in the morning, whining, and dealing with power struggles.Dozens of parents in the commu-nity have benefitted from theLove and Logic classes offeredthrough JFS. Lisa Blau feels thatthe Love & Logic class has helpedher family. She says, “My kidsnow respond quite well to mewhen I say, ‘We do nice things fornice people.’ They know now thatif they are not nice, they will notget things like treats, play dateswith friends, time at the pool, etc.”Lisa related a funny story abouthow the program helps with fami-ly communication: “We all satdown to dinner one evening andKate, my five year old, was nothappy with my menu. Kate’s com-ment was, ‘I’m not eating that!’ Iresponded, ‘Ok, Kate, I under-stand. It’ll be here when you’rehungry. I love you too much toargue with you.’ Kate’s responsewas, ‘I think you need a littlealone time Mommy.’”Therapy and Case Management

Your gift helps provide therapyand case management for adultswho suffer with depression, abuse, illness, divorce, and finan-cial difficulties. “Judy”’s husband,“Jeff,” passed away suddenly afew months ago. “Judy” was mar-ried for 30 years and never han-dled the family finances. She was

overwhelmed with her situation aswell as depressed and anxiousabout dealing with life alone. JFSprovided “Judy” with therapy tohelp her work through her griefissues. In addition, the JFS casemanager assisted “Judy” withfinding lower cost housing, affordable insurance and budgetand credit counseling in the com-munity.Senior Outreach and CaregiverSupport

Your gift helps provide a con-nection to the community forolder adults and also supportsthose people who care for them.Older adults are not forgotten;they are cherished and nurtured, due to JFS outreach services. JFSworks with approximately 150seniors who live in nursing, inde-pendent, and assisted living facili-ties across Charlotte. For many ofthese seniors, a visit from JFSstaff and volunteers is the onlyconnection to the Jewish commu-nity. JFS provides Shabbat servic-es, Jewish programming and sore-ly needed companionship. JFSalso facilitates a monthly supportgroup is held for people caring fortheir loved ones as well as quarter-ly educational programming, togive Caregivers the tools to copewith the difficult issues they arefacing and to learn from experts inthe field.

Jill Lipson, JFS Board memberand Chair of the 2011 FriendsCampaign, extends a heartfelt“Thank You” to JFS FriendsCampaign supporters. Thank youfor caring, for reaching out tomake a difference, and for helpingthose in need.

Jill says, “Because of loyalcommunity members who supportthe agency both financially andwith their time, JFS continues todo important work such as provid-ing financial assistance, helpingchildren with behavioral chal-lenges, and working closely withour seniors, amongst others. The2011 Campaign’s slogan,‘Changing Lives Together,’ reallyexpresses the importance of theJewish community and the greaterCharlotte community workingtogether to meet the needs of thosewho live amongst us. What is your connection toJudaism? How do you identifyyourself as a Jew? Are youambivalent about your connectionto Judaism? Are you movingtowards or away from the practiceof Judaism or you totally sure ofyour identity? The Charlotte JewishFilm Festival and the Levine-SklutJudaic Library are once again part-nering to bring high-quality docu-mentary films to the Jewish com-munity throughout the year.

The first in the series is anuplifting documentary film calledGut Shabbes, Vietnam. In thismemorable film a young Israelicouple and their newborn baby setout to the Far East on a one-wayticket. Menachem and Racheli arrivein Ho Chi Minh City just weeksbefore Rosh Hashanah and franti-

Blue Sheets on the Way for 2012As Charlotte’s Jewish commu-

nity continues its steady growth, something else is growing alongwith it: The annual Charlotte AreaJewish Community Directory cel-ebrates its 65th year.

For more than 60 years, mem-bers of the Charlotte chapter ofthe national Hadassah organiza-tion have diligently compiled afree list of names, addresses, andphone numbers of members of theCharlotte area Jewish community.Individuals, families, temples, schools, and other communityorganizations are listed, as well asthe businesses and professionalsconnected in some way to the fab-ric of Jewish life in Charlotte.

“We consider this to be a publicservice,” say Judy Kaufmann andTess Berger who have worked onthe directory for several years intheir role as Hadassah volunteers.“So many people are moving tothe Charlotte region from all overthe country and we want to createa strong sense of communitythrough a single resource. It’s agreat way to stay in touch withfriends old and new, and to con-nect with doctors, lawyers, plumbers, real estate agents, financial advisors – anyone who’sa member of our extended Jewishcommunity.”

Hadassah’s hard work pays offwith a resource guide that is con-sidered the most comprehensiveof its kind in the U.S. The firstedition was published in 1947,and a complete collection of

directories is housed in theCharlotte Jewish HistoricalSociety at the Levine-Sklut JudaicLibrary. “People tell me that whenthey’re conducting fundraisingcampaigns and working fromagency databases, they’ll often getfrustrated with inaccurate contactinformation and instead they’llpick up the directory,” Berger sayswith a chuckle. “I hear all the timethat it’s the ‘Jewish White andYellow Pages.’”

Beyond its community servicecomponent, the directory is a keyfundraising tool for Hadassah.Last year’s revenue from directo-ry sales, sponsorships and adver-tising netted more than $24,000for medical research programs.

Preparations for each year’sdirectory kick-off in Septemberwith a mailing of the now-familiarBlue Sheets to anyone listed in themost recent edition – meaning thatthe community should be receiv-ing these forms in the mail rightabout now. “We urge everyone toupdate their information eachyear,” Kaufmann explains. “Wedon’t want to assume that phonenumbers or addresses haven’tchanged just because we haven’treceived responses. There’s also a‘do-not-list’ box for those whoprefer not to have their informa-tion published.”

In case a mailed Blue Sheet ismisplaced, or for newcomers tothe community, the form can beprinted out from Hadassah’s web-site: charlottehadassah.org or the

“Coming together is a begin-ning, staying together is progress, and working together is success” -Henry Ford

September is a time of newbeginnings and a time of comingtogether. In Judaism, RoshHashanah marks the new year. Ineducation, September marks newclasses, goals, and benchmarks. Interms of personal beginnings, Ihave The Jewish Preschool onSardis, a new community withwhich to grow in the comingmonths and years.

In my new position as Directorof the Jewish Preschool on Sardis,I wear a variety of hats and have a

variety of responsibilities. Iapproach these responsibilitieswith the head and heart of ateacher. What do I mean by that? Ithink that a school represents thecommunity it serves; the children, the parents, the staff, the neighbor-hood. Children need a comfort-able, safe environment where theycan explore, create and share in acommon space. Teachers culti-vate that environment, adding thematerials, the decor, and moreimportantly, the guidance and sup-port to make each child success-ful. JPS is known to provide allthese qualities and more. Ourschool is an environment whereindividuality and a sense ofJewish identity can flourish.

I also come to JPS as a mom. InHebrew, the woman of the houseis called “akeret habayit,” theessence of the home. It is thefemale head of house that sets thetone and determines the characterof the home. As my own childrengrow into their roles as membersof the Charlotte Jewish communi-ty, my new position allows me toexplore beyond my own home andinto the community. Along withthe staff, we will work together toset the tone at JPS, a place of

warmth, support, respect, andlearning. It is my hope and wish tohelp the Jewish Preschool onSardis and the JPS communitycreate more opportunities for chil-dren to dream, create, and grow.

There is anticipation andexcitement with each new begin-ning and I find that to be more truethis year. Developing relationshipswith the children, families, staff, and the community at large will bemy top priority. Through theserelationships, we will create anenvironment that is not onlydevelopmentally appropriate, butalso stimulating and nurturing. Iknow there is much to discoverand I look forward to taking it allin and contributing to and build-ing upon the solid foundationalready in place.

As we all begin this new jour-ney, let us come together, staytogether and work together tomake this year one of the best. Y

By Phil WarshauerExecutive Director of theFoundation for the CharlotteJewish Community, New Jerseynative, and fan of BruceSpringsteen and the E StreetBand

On the evening of June 18, my

life was jolted by a text messageinforming me of the death ofClarence Clemons, legendary sax-ophonist and the mountain ofBruce Springsteen’s E StreetBand, a week after he had suffereda stroke. Over that week I had pre-pared myself for the worst but,

was still stunned by the news.Deep down inside I’m still a

New Jersey guy and a devoted (ok,borderline obsessed) fan of BruceSpringsteen and the E Street Band.My first exposure to the music ofBruce Springsteen and the saxo-phone of Clarence Clemons dates

back to 1975. The recentlyreleased Born to Run album wason the turntable (you know thatdevice with a needle that played avinyl circle with a hole in the mid-dle) and the song “Tenth AvenueFreeze Out” was blaring through-out the house with its forceful sax-ophone introduction that was dis-tinctively Clarence Clemons.

Over the years the music andsound of Bruce Springsteen andhis legendary E Street Band hasbeen a supportive friend, trustedcompanion and spiritual guide.Led by Springsteen, the band is aunique “band of brothers,” whohave developed a special relation-ship with each other and their fans.Their music and lyrics provide aspecial connection that links mewith long time friends and issomething I’ve shared with eachof my four children. My wife andtwo older daughters have attendedconcert experiences with me and Iregret that my younger son anddaughter will not have that sameexperience of witnessing the orig-inal legendary E Street Band.Featured in the majority of thesesongs and stage-right at each ofthose 20 plus concerts was the eas-ily identified saxophone ofClarence “Big Man” Clemons. Iwas and continue to be saddenedby the loss of this musical icon.

Immediately following hisdeath, while listening to my col-lection of recorded songs and liveconcert performances, I read manytributes by fans and fellow artistsfrom around the world. Mythoughts moved from sadnessabout the void left behind to theincredible life Clarence fit into his69 years and the legacy leftbehind. What a way to live yourlife. Wouldn’t each of us like togain fame and fortune by doingsomething we love while provid-ing comfort and pleasure to totalstrangers during our lifetimes andbeyond? As William C. Rhodenstated in his New York Times col-umn, “The Big Man is gone, but

he leaves a rich and timeless lega-cy.” Isn’t that something we eachshould strive for?

What better time than duringthis reflective time of year toremember those who made a dif-ference in our lives and ask our-selves how we can make a differ-ence in the lives of others. It iseasier than you think. We eachhave the ability to create and leavea legacy of our own and inspireothers to do the same. It may comein the form of a financial gift, as adedicated lifelong volunteer orthrough the lessons passed downto your children. It can also befound in the organizations andprograms that you helped to cre-ate, worked to strengthen andassisted to sustain.

“The quality of our lives isdiminished every time we lose agreat artist,” said fellow bandmember Steven Van Zandt. “It’s adifferent world without SamCooke, Otis Redding, JimiHendrix, Janis Joplin, JimMorrison, Curtis Mayfield, BrianJones, and the rest. But like all ofthem, Clarence leaves us his work, which will continue to inspire usand motivate us, and future gener-ations, forever.”

As I listen to one of my favoritesongs, “Jungleland,” I am onceagain inspired by that dramatictwo minute and seventeen secondsaxophone solo that is the song’smost dramatic moment. It isClarence’s reminder to me that weall have work to do, people toinspire and future generations toserve.

For additional assistance in cre-ating your own lasting legacyplease contact Phil Warshauer at704-973-4544 or [email protected]. Y

October 2 – 10:30 AM1801 Statesville Avenue

Rain or ShineAt the closing of the Yom

Kippur Ne’ilah service each year, the Book of Life is sealed for yetanother year. How many of us willbe inscribed for another year oflife? On what does God base that

inscription? We Jews believe that our God is

a merciful and forgiving God. Wealso know - many of us throughfirst-hand experience - that beinga good person and having a goodneshamah (soul) does not neces-sarily guarantee anotheryear of life. In fact, weknow that bad things hap-pen to good people. Ifbeing a good person andfollowing in the image ofGod by praying, perform-ing mitzvot, and studyingTorah does not guaranteeus life year after year, thenwhy the need for such prayer andsupplication and self-deprivation(fasting) on Yom Kippur?

The most learned rabbis cannotanswer the question: Why badthings happen to good people? Wecan ask the rabbis and God,Himself, all the questions we want– and in Judaism we are requiredto ask those questions; however, for some questions there are justno sufficient answers. Judaismteaches us that prayer, the per-formance of mitzvot, and thestudy of Torah are the most impor-tant things a Jew can do. In per-forming mitzvot, we becomealmost God-like. The mystics tellus that when God created the uni-verse, He had a huge container toput all of the holiness into. Butthere was so much holiness thatthe container broke into a thou-sand pieces. It became our task asnewly created men and women ofthe world to go around andretrieve God’s holiness.

During the High Holidays, when we gather in prayer as oneuniversal Jewish community, Godsmiles down on us for the holinesswe portray. We gather in prayer. We gather in song. We gather inritual. We gather in love. We gath-er as one loud chaotic crowd andyet periodically we hush quietly tohear God’s small voice. That smallvoice… which looms in the

chasms of our consciousness andsubconsciousness. That smallvoice… which gives direction andmeaningfulness to our lives. Thatsmall voice…which creates thefaith that guides us to do God’swork here on earth.

So yes, while badthings do happen to goodpeople, holiness remainsthe essence of life. Andthough living a holy lifemay not guarantee yourbeing inscribed in theBook of Life from oneyear to another, it suredoes make you a great

and righteous person… and a per-son who will be memorialized byothers for the holiness and good-ness that made you so special.

We are living in times ofunprecedented economic volatili-ty. Unemployment rates soar. Jobsare hard to keep. Homes are beingforeclosed. Money is tight. Formany of our friends and neigh-bors, the present is gloomy anddark and their prospect for thefuture is scary and uncertain. Nowmore than ever, the HebrewCemetery Association needs yoursupport. Your tax deductible annu-al dues of $72 will help maintain adignified and sanctified restingplace for all those who precedeyou in eternal life and will guaran-tee the same for you and yourloved ones when that unthinkableevent occurs.

If you would like to make adonation to memorialize a lovedone at this time of the year, sendyour check payable to the HebrewCemetery to 5007 Providence Rd.,Charlotte, NC 28226. One thing he saidwas that at a young age(around 4th and 5th grade), kidsbegin to struggle with identity andthat is when self-confidence isreally necessary. I came to the conclusionthat learning about respect, and how important it is torespect others and yourself, should be taught at a youngage, so I started to talk to the4th and 5th graders at myschool about respect. kids that respect is extremelyimportant, and it is importantthat they not only respectone another, but also them-selves. I revisited the stu-dents for a follow up at theend of the year, and thencame to speak to theFreedom School [during

their morning Harambee]. I reallyhope they got a lot out of the pres-entation because respect is such animportant virtue they will need forthe rest of their lives. Y
