Cycling, A Flanders Tradition

On Sunday mornings in my village, Grobbendonk, Belgium, at 8 am men and women start out for

their weekly cycling happening. As in so many villages, in all over Flanders, they are sponsored by

the local bike shops. In return they often help to organize the ‘kermis’ (local fairs) races in their

village. The village cafés and local shops sponsor the race organizations. And before, during and

after the race, spectators sponsor the cafés, buy a couple of beers while discussing the latest cycling news.

Families gather outdoor to watch the racers and children take their little bikes out on the

sidewalks and play cycling champion.

This is our cycling tradition, alive in the heart of every village in Flanders. Cycling events draw

crowds and crowds draw sponsors, racers, technicians, innovators and business.

Some of the leading companies in cycling are founded by racers at the end of their careers, they

know the business inside out, join university research teams, create, test and innovate. Most of

all, they are used to work in a team, face challenges, endure and race to win.
