May is the time to begin thinking about new officers and a new board for 2017-2018. I will not be continuing as president due to family obligations. However, I’m very thankful to the board and all of our members for making this such a special year for us. We have grown our membership and moved into a beautiful new space, and it has been wonderful getting to know you all.

The new officers and the board begin in September, and the proposed slate of officers needs to be prepared beforehand and voted on at the August meeting, which I will not be there for. Karen Standridge has agreed to be Chairperson for the Nominating Committee and is asking for volunteers to work with her. The committee will also need to determine who will continue in their current positions for the 2017-2018 calendar year. If you can, please volunteer for the Nominating Committee as soon as possible by contacting Karen at [email protected].

April Program:

Reveille Kennedy, Program Chair, had asked our Signature Member, Nancy Nuttleman, to do our program for April. It was not Nancy's intention to complete a painting, but to get us started.

Nancy showed us some of her completed works, explained each step of her process and demonstrated the application of Golden fluid acrylics thinned with Liquitex slow drying blending medium. Nancy uses 300 lb. Arches paper torn to desired size, which she tapes to her surface allowing for an inch border and applies one coat of white gesso up to the taped edge. She uses drawing charcoal to outline the composition remembering to bring lines off of the paper. The outline is sprayed with Krylon matte fixative. Nancy will start with three transparent primary colors working on freezer paper. For this second layer, she used Quinacridone Gold, Quinacridone Magenta and Cerulean Blue. Nancy worked with a large brush and suggested working from warm to cool and vice versa and to play between transparent and opaque. Abstract work needs to incorporate line, shape, color and value as well as a center of interest. When finished, the painting will be given one coat of gloss varnish.

Thank you Nancy for explaining your process in detail and showing us how you create your wonderful abstracts.

To see more of Nancy's original artwork, visit Boulder Street Gallery. Also, stop by her website at: http://www.nancynuttelman.com.

May Program:

Joe Beckner was born in Muncie, Indiana, in 1936. He minored in art at the University of Colorado, after which he never left Colorado. From 1962 until 1979 he taught art in three different high schools, and acquired an Art Degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Even though he taught and practiced his profession he didn’t become a serious full-time artist until he sold out two one-man shows in 1978 and 1979. In 1980, he left teaching to become a full time artist, which he is today!

He is one of the premier transparent watercolorists in the US, and has won numerous awards such as Best of Show in the Poudre Valley Art League, Best Painting in the Castle Rock Artfest, Top 100 in Arts for the Parks, and others. Joe is also a Signature Member of the CWS, and he has participated and won awards in their State Exhibits, Rocky Mountain National Watermedia and the PPWS International Watermedia as well. His works are in many private and corporate collections globally. Although he paints all over the US, his first love is Colorado with its rich vibrant colors and dramatic landscapes. His paintings have a serenity that capture the West as it once was and is today.

Juror and Workshop Presenter: Soon Y. Warren, AWS, NWS www.soonwarren.com

The class will learn how to create an image of chosen subjects, such as, a cut crystal bowl with florals, Koi pond water, or silver pots in watercolor with a step by step process. To speed up the class exercise, Soon Y. Warren will provide a reference photo and drawing for the group exercise. Following a painting demonstration, workshop participants will do their own painting in order to fully understand the process. While concentrating on technique, the concept of color theory, composition, and color values will be incorporated into the workshop. Painting workshop participants will learn:

• Glazing and washing techniques to create a luminous under painting

• How to utilize light and dark values in order to capture the sparkle of glass

• How to approach a painting

• How to incorporate the concept of color theory and color relationships into a painting

• Discussion and critiques will follow during workshop session

• In addition to the group exercise, participants are encouraged to bring current pieces to paint along with reference photos. To make the most of instructional time, prepare the drawing before the workshop. Read the step by step painting process in my second book, “Painting Vibrant Watercolors: Discover the Magic of Light, Color and Contrast.” You can purchase it at a major book store or the internet, such as Amazon.com.
