About The Juror

Ted Nuttall, AWS/NWS

Ted Nuttall is a figurative artist whose painting ex-

pression was born out of his observation of people.

Ted is a signature member of the American Water-

color Society, National Watercolor Society, Water-

color West, Western Federation of Watercolor Soci-

eties, and enjoys Master Status with the Transparent

Watercolor Society of America.

Most recently, he was a featured artist in both the 2014 Russian

publication, "Masters of Watercolor," and in the 2013 French pub-

lication, “Pratique Des Arts.” Ted was the featured cover artist for

the February 2014 issue of Watercolor Artist magazine. Ted’s

work has been published in North Light Books, Splash 8 and

Splash 10, and his painting, "Whispering Smith," appeared on the

cover of Splash 12.

Juror’s Statement

It was an honor to have been selected as juror for the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society 2015 Exhibition. To undertake the

selection of certain pieces as representative of the best from among the entries submitted was difficult at best and re-

quired repeated and thoughtful viewing of the body of work.

I approached this task cognizant of the fact that my choices might be considered, to a large degree, subjective in nature

and tried therefore to outline for myself a set of criteria that might assist me in a more objective approach.

I considered the following:

• Did the painting seem to be more than just a reproduction of the subject, i.e. did it tell a story, express a feeling and

state the artists passion for his or her subject?

• Did the painting appear to be expertly rendered; that is, did the artist seem to have a command of the medium, was

there an apparent continuity to the style or method of applying the pigment?

• What appeared to be the artists consideration for design and composition? How effectively was composition used in

the overall impression and expression of the painting?

• And was the painting carefully photographed assuring its best reproduction and presentation? These, among others,

became the overriding considerations as I viewed the submissions, selected the show and presented the awards.

I would like to express, to all who entered, my admiration for your producing the work and having the confidence and

commitment to present your paintings for jurying. And congratulations to those whose work I selected for the show as

well as for awards. Thank you all again for the opportunity to see your work. I was inspired by the experience.

The Founders Award honors one of the ten Charter Members who founded the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society in 1986. This year’s honoree is Don Van Horn, AWS. Donald Van Horn was born in Hinsdale, IL, in 1928 and grew up in a suburb of Chicago. He graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1950 with a BS in Biology and from the University of Illinois in 1952 with an MS in Zoology. During this period, Don studied watercolor painting on an informal basis with the late Charles Vickery, an emerging marine painter at the time. He switched from watercolor to 35 mm photography when drafted into the US Army in 1953. Don returned to graduate school at the Uni-versity of Colorado-Boulder in 1956, and in 1961, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Zoology.

He taught at Lake Forest College (1961-1962), Utica College of Syracuse University (1962-1965) and the University of Colorado-Boulder (1965-1966). When the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) was opened in 1966, Don was one of the founding members of the biology de-partment. He taught at UCCS until 1985, when he retired and focused his energy on art. Don had taken up watercolor painting again in 1976 and entered competitive shows. He won sev-eral awards including the Silver Medal in the 2003 American Watercolor Society Exhibition. He received the High Winds Medal and gained signature status in the American Watercolor Society in 2013. He lives in Colorado Springs with his wife and continues to be active in the art world as well in the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society. Don’s painting, “Howard Street Yard,” has also been juried into this International Watermedia 2015.

In Memory of Gayle Higgins June 12, 1957 - April 22, 2015

The Pikes Peak Watercolor Society is saddened by the loss of Gayle Higgins on April 22, 2015. Gayle had became a member in 2011 and readily achieved sig-nature status. She was an active participant, a friend to many of us and an inspi-ration to all. Gayle had volunteered as the Workshop Coordinator for International Waterme-dia 2013 and wanted to do so again this year. Unfortunately, she was not able to because of the recurrence of leukemia she had so valiantly recovered from two years before. Gayle also was our Education Coordinator with the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center’s Bemis School of Art, where she once taught classes and is remembered as an accomplished artist and teacher. During her ordeal, Gayle continued to paint, enter exhibitions and achieve awards. She entered and received an acceptance into this year’s International Watermedia 2015, and her painting, "Red Green Silver," can be seen in this cat-alog. The Pikes Peak Watercolor Society

Ten watercolor artists living in the Pikes Peak region of Colorado founded the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society in 1986

to promote excellence in the watercolor painting medium and to encourage artistic achievement in the communi-

ty. They held their first exhibit at the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs in March of 1988. Subsequent exhibitions

have been held at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center, the Gallery

of Contemporary Art at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts, Cotton-

wood Center for the Arts, Pioneers Museum, and this year at the Pikes Peak Library District’s Library 21c.

The Pikes Peak Watercolor Society promotes and encourages watercolor through its sponsorship of exhibitions, educa-

tional funding, workshops, and through its support of other local arts organizations and educational institutions.

The Society sponsors ongoing exhibitions such as:

The Signature Members Show, normally during the latter part of the year.

International Watermedia Exhibition biennially, normally during spring or summer.

The Pikes Peak Library District, Library 21c

PPLD has public exhibit space in the majority of its facilities and hosts travelling exhibits, partner exhibitions, and the

work of local artists and photographers. The exhibit spaces at Library 21c amplify the District's current capacity by of-

fering numerous areas for multimedia exhibit and presentation. The main gallery, a spacious two-level area designed

for 2D and 3D exhibition, has wonderful natural light and maximum exposure to the facility's 3,000+ daily visitors.

The Gallery @ 21c hosts local, national, and international exhibits as well as guided audio tours, public receptions, and

experiential learning in combination with other library resources.


Membership in the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society

The PPWS has about 150 Signature and Associate members. We invite you to be our guest at one of our monthly

meetings held at 6:00 PM the third Wednesday of each month (except July) at the Cottonwood Center for the Arts,

located in downtown Colorado Springs at 427 E. Colorado Avenue.

Associate Membership is open to any adult in the US by application submitted with yearly dues of $35.00. For forms

Associate Members can attain Signature Membership by being juried into three PPWS approved exhibitions. Upon

meeting these requirements, the Associate Member can request signature status. The Signature Membership Committee

grants approval for signature status.

Many PPWS members are active participants and show in local and national watercolor and art society exhibi-

tions. Works by society members appear regularly in national and international exhibitions, galleries, books and publi-

cations. Numerous members teach art classes, organize show events and painting outings, and hold workshops locally,

nationally and abroad.
