5-Day Wilderness First Responder course information Thank-you for joining a 5-Day Wilderness First Responder Course with Boreal River Rescue and Wilderness Medical Associates International (WMAI). We are looking forward to a great course with you! Please read through the following pages as you prepare and do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Course description Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the international standard for wilderness guides, search and rescue team members, and those who travel and play in remote areas. The course will prepare you to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. Emphasis is placed on prolonged care, advanced treatments, environmental problems, evacuations, critical thinking, and leadership. Wilderness First Responder is traditionally taught over 7 or 8 days. The ‘5-day + Independent Study’ format includes 5 days of on-site course time preceded by 25 to 45 hours of independent learning. It is designed for students and professionals who have tight schedules and the self-discipline to adequately prepare. You are required to complete the assigned reading, case studies, study guide, and tests prior to the on-site portion. The on-site instruction will reinforce and expand on the knowledge that you have already acquired. Because you will arrive familiar with the didactic material, the on-site training can focus on rescue scenarios and practical skills. The ‘5-day + Independent Study’ WFR course has been through nine years of development and testing. Conscientious preparation, studying, and time prior to the on-site portion is essential for success. This is not a short-cut version of our standard course.

Prerequisites You must be 18 years of age or older. It is important that you have the discipline and learning style to complete the independent study component prior to arrival.

Take away materials • Wilderness and Rescue Medicine, by Jeffrey Isaac and David Johnson

• Wilderness First Responder Class Notes

• Wilderness and Rescue Medicine Workbook, by Tom Clausing

• The Field Guide of Wilderness & Rescue Medicine, by Jim Morrissey

What to expect Days include a mixture of classroom sessions, skill workshops, and small group drills and scenarios. We will have simulations with makeup and stage blood that are video taped for enhanced learning. These

simulate real rescues and the conditions under which they could occur. They can be physically demanding as they require transporting patients with fellow classmates over rough terrain, in adverse weather conditions. Anticipate intense days. Please don’t plan on being involved with other work or school during the duration of the course. You can expect excellent instructors who are professional, dynamic, and fun and a course that will be one of the best you’ll ever experience.

Course hours Typically, days run from 8:00am to 6:00pm. On the 5-day WFR, the 3rd day will go until 8pm.

Preparation and independent study You will do at least 25 hours of independent preparation. See below for instructions and details. You can access the student materials by logging in to the WMA website at www.wildmed.ca/wilderness-medicine-search-rescue-training-event-materials. Use the number 27945 for both the course ID and Password.

• Plan for a minimum of 25 hours (many students spend more than 30 hours). For most people, trying to cram that much focused learning into a few days doesn’t work. Most students do best by spacing the learning out into 10 to 15 sessions over 2 to 6 weeks.

• As soon as you enroll, we will send you the text book, Wilderness and Rescue Medicine, by mail. Read it in its entirety.

• Answer all of the questions in the ‘study guide’ and complete the case studies. All of the necessary information is in the text book.

• Complete the online exam at least 48 hours before the onsite portion of the course*.

• Review the other documents on the WMA website including the Wilderness Protocols.

• Print off and bring the completed study assignment as well as the completed SOAP notes and answers for the case studies to class to hand in to the instructor on the first morning.

*Ideally, you will do the exam around one week before the onsite portion of the course. It is a difficult multiple choice exam and if you attempt it without first completing the study guide, it will likely not be a good use of your or your instructor’s time. Too far in advance may also not be ideal for your retention and less than 48 hours before the course will not give your instructor enough time to review your responses. Upon submission, your results will immediately be e-mailed to your lead instructor and a WMA faculty member.

Why choose a medical course with Boreal River Rescue and WMAI For our medical courses, Boreal River Rescue are the hosts and coordinators, while the curriculum comes from Wilderness Medical Associates International (WMAI), a worldwide leader that has set the standard in wilderness medicine and rescue training for over three decades. WMAI certifies over 8000 students a year around the world and the courses have been taught on all seven continents. The curriculum is up to date and cutting edge: programs are continuously revised and updated by a faculty committee made up of health care professionals, outdoor industry experts and education specialists.

WMAI’s approach is focused on students gaining knowledge about the way the body works and general concepts for rescues. Instead of memorizing lists of signs, symptoms, and treatments (like other first aid courses often do), you’ll be able to understand what is going on with a patient so you can confidently make decisions and provide treatments with minimal resources.

About Boreal River Building confidence, skills and knowledge At Boreal River, you can expect to be challenged. Whether it is whitewater rescue courses, river expeditions, skills training, or leadership development, you will gain huge amounts of hands-on experience with long lasting results.
