The Souwthwest R-V School District held their February School Board meeting.

The calendar hearing on the 2017-2018 school calendar including start date started at 6:30 p.m.

In accordance with Missouri law, they must post notice of and hold a public meeting to discuss and vote on the district’s start date if the proposed date is earlier than ten (10) calendar days prior to the first Monday in September. Since the pro-posed start date is August 9, holding a hearing is required. Superintendent Tosha Tilford enclosed the proposed calendar in board members’ packets. In addition, the following bullets indicate proposed changes for next year’s calendar as com-pared to this year’s:

Staff members and parents were given an opportunity to provide input toward the 2017-2018 school calendar.

• Start of school: The first day of school will be Wednes-day, August 9. This is a day earlier than this year’s start date of August 11, which was on a Thursday.

• Christmas Break will be the same length as last year’s and that is nine school days and 13 calendar days.

• Professional Development Days: All of the professional development days are on Monday except for the second one of the year that is on Tuesday prior to the start of school.

• Extended Weekend Breaks: Three day and four day week-ends will be similar to this year, with corresponding dates changing slightly in some cases.

• Parent/Teacher Conferences: These are going to be one night from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. instead of the two evenings that were in this year’s calendar. The dates are October 9 and March 15.

• 12:30 Release: There will be four 12:30 releases one at the end of each semester and before each parent/teacher confer-ence night (October 19, December 20, March 15, and the last day of school).

• Professional Learning Community Time (PLC): Every Friday, the students will be released at 2 p.m. so that the staff members can have collaboration time.

• Student Days: Last year, the students only attended 172 student days. This year, I propose that we increase the student days to 174 and return to the state recommended amount of calendar days.

• Teacher Days: This has not changed from the 180 con-tracted days that the teachers have attended in the past.

The Consent Agenda was passed by the board of educa-tion. Pertaining to personnel (item c), there was one retire-ment of Patricia Lee, speech pathologist. Ronnie Stanley also resigned from driving a school bus.

Amy Day was hired as a one-to-one paraprofessional for one of the students with high needs. Michaela Hayworth and Polly McCrill will be added to the substitute teacher list once all DESE requirements are met. Kandice Martin is to be added to the substitute custodian or cook list. Crystal Smith was also approved to be substitute bus driver.

The following individuals were approved for positions for the 2017-18 school year. They are:

• Middle School Principal: Christy Hermansen• Speech Pathologist: Wendy Lueckenhoff• K-12 Librarian: Kelly McNabb• Kindergarten Teacher: Jessica NaugleReassignments for the 2017-2018 school year. They are:• Brenna Zucca, a 4th grade teacher, is being reassigned to

the middle school Language Arts position which opened last month with the retirement of Julie Prewitt.

• Michelle Rantz will be reassigned from 2nd grade to the 4th grade.

• Kari Taylor will be reassigned from 1st grade to 2nd grade.

• Teri Jo Shackles will be reassigned to Title I Teacher because of the movement of Kelly McNabb to librarian.

Old Business included the approval of the Asbestos Removal Bids. Bids for removal of asbestos flooring in the elementary library ranged from $2.75 a square foot to over $3.75 a square foot. The board approved the bid of $2.75 per square foot bid from Jonathan’s Asbestos Removal. The plan is

for this project to begin on Monday, May 29.Graduation and Promotion Dates were approved. Con-

cerning dates for Graduation and eighth grade promotion, the board approved the high school graduation date of May 12 and the 8th grade promotion date of May 11.

New Business included the 2017-2018 School Calendar. The board approved the 2017-2018 school calendar.

The Surplus Property List was approved by the board. The Fine Arts programs reports, submitted by Mary Ellen

Conrad, Glenda Dalton, Nancy Givens, and Wyatt Hester, as well as Karen Huffman’s report pertaining to Speech and Debate, were approved.

• Student Report:Elizabeth Wolfe, senior class president, included the

monthly Student Report.• Maintenance Report:Tom Lawrence included a monthly Maintenance Report.• Technology Report:Dan Shelton included the monthly Technology Report.• Administrative Reports:Elementary School Principal’s Report:Jeff Payne included a monthly Elementary School Princi-

pal’s Report.Middle School Principal’s Report: Beverly Bonner has included a monthly Middle School

Principal’s Report.High School Principal’s Report:Eric Roller included a monthly High School Principal’s

Report.Curriculum Director/Title I Director’s Report:Kara Hendrix included a monthly Curriculum Director/

Title I Director’s Report. Special Services Director’s Report:Bob Vice included a monthly Special Services Director’s

ReportSuperintendent Report Items were presented by Tosha Til-

ford:I. Bond Issue UpdateInformation was emailed to all parents and the teachers.• A committee has been formed and will be meeting prior

to the board meeting on February 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the high school library. An informational handout was placed at the admission gate.

• A voter registration table will be at the high school Feb-ruary 16 at 11:30 a.m.

• CTS is working on informational flyers.• Both newspapers and KURM radio interviewed Tilford

and will be interviewing again closer to the election.• The next committee meeting was at 5 p.m. in the elemen-

tary school library on February 27.II. State Budget• State budget cuts in student transportation has affected

the district $500 per month. • The 2017-18 budget is in the planning stage.III. Other• Student Teachers: In Tilford’s professional opinion, it is

not a good practice for a student teacher to be placed at the school which they attended or graduated. It does not allow the student teacher to get experience in other districts which is a great disservice to them. Tilford told the administrative team that she did not want Southwest to accept any student teachers that are from Southwest. In addition, most of the universities do not allow this practice.

• Conference Games Admission Cost: Varsity $4 adults and $3 students; Junior High: $3 adults and $2 students

An Executive Session was included to address any person-nel items and student discipline.
