From the Desk of Father Ed:

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we celebrate the 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Church proclaims the beginning of the 5th chapter of St. Matthew known as the Beatitudes. The Gospel passage consists of eight blessings that the Lord promises to his disciples. Jesus sat at the top of the mountain with his disciples around him and he taught them. The scene reminds us of Moses, when he went up Mt. Sinai to receive the Old Covenant, that is, the Law from God. Moses brought the Law or Ten Commandments down the mountain to the people. Jesus hands on the New Covenant to his disciples, which is greater and involves the heavenly kingdom and not an earthly one and so the disciples join him on the lofty mountain top.

The Beatitudes are blessings that the Lord promises to his disciples that are fully realized in the kingdom of heaven. Often at funerals that Beatitudes is the Gospel proclaimed to strengthen the family’s hope in Jesus’ promises. This weekend as we hear the Beatitudes proclaimed our hope should also be strengthened. This Gospel reminds us that there is a heaven and as disciples of Jesus what is required of us to get there. Jesus taught his disciples the way to the kingdom. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Blessed are those who mourn...Blessed are the meek...Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness...Blessed are the merciful...Blessed are the clean of heart...Blessed are the peacemakers...Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness...when they insult you...Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

As disciples of Jesus, we strive to empty ourselves of the things of the world, that is, we should be detached from material things and be poor in spirit and filled with the things of heaven. Jesus and Moses were meek and humble and we too need to rid ourselves of pride and be gentle with one another. The Church is always inviting us to grow in holiness and virtue; we become righteous before God through his grace and acceptance of his grace that we receive in the sacraments. Let us always be in the state of grace before our God.

Jesus gave us the example of being merciful from the Cross, “Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing.” And again, the Our Father, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Disciples of Jesus must work at the virtue of purity in a world that promotes impurity and immorality. God gives us the grace we need to be clean of heart. There is so much violence in our nation and in our world, however, discipleship of the Lord Jesus demands that we be peacemakers; Jesus gives us his peace, the peace that the world can not give.

To be a disciple of Jesus in the world often involves persecution and suffering. Jesus reminds us this weekend not be afraid because he has gone before us and is with us in his Church and her sacraments. He promises us that if we strive to live out the beatitudes that we will be with him forever in the kingdom of heaven.

Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us, Father Ed, Administrator

Parish Life:

A special thank to The Knights of Columbus for sponsoring our annual bus trip to Washington DC for the March for Life. I also want thank the many people who joined us in Washington and for those who were praying with us. Please continue to pray and give witness to the dignity of all human life especially the most vulnerable, the unborn child. Every child in the womb needs to be protected and given equal rights, the most basic of all human rights, the right to life!
