“The appeal to me is that this special Route 66 tour highlights the plight of homeless animals,” says

Stilwell. “I am happy and honored to be the spokesperson and to raise awareness and encourage people

to attend the adoption days in their communities.”

For eight seasons, the British-born Stilwell has unleashed her positive dog training techniques blend-

ed with her relationship counseling skills to restore harmony in pet households. Her show now reaches

audiences in more than 50 countries.

She recently expanded her viewing audience by launching the “American Dog with Victoria Stilwell”

show on the eHowPets YouTube channel. In a recent episode on this Internet show, she ventured behind

bars to share dog training tips with inmates at the Gwinnett County Jail in Georgia. These inmates are

paired with shelter dogs to teach them the obedience skills they need to improve their chances for per-

manent adoptions.

“This was the first time I’ve ever been inside a jail and surprisingly, I was not nervous at all,” she says.

“We—the inmates, the jail staff and I—were all there for a common purpose—to get these dogs trained.

These dogs give many of these inmates a second chance, too.”

“You can’t build a good relationship with a dog based on intimidation, dominance or physical punish-

ment—period,” she declares.”To train a dog in a positive manner is to give that dog the tools he needs to

live in our world as well as to give him confidence and security.”

FIDO Friendly caught up with Stilwell, who was enjoying a rare lazy Sunday at home with her family.

She had just returned from a long neighborhood walk with Sadie, her 10-year-old chocolate Labrador

retriever and Jasmine, a young, seven-pound Chihuahua mix. Fittingly, it was National Dog Day and she

vowed to devote the day to her pair of second-chance dogs.

“Jasmine was brought into a shelter by her former owners in a cardboard box,” she recalls. “They had

locked her in her crate for hours due to urination. This was a young, scared dog with no social skills, but

she loved my daughter and Sadie took to her right away, as well. With love and direction, Jasmine has

turned out to be a real sweetheart.”

As spokesperson for this year’s Get Your Licks on Route 66 tour that started October sixth in Los Ange-

les and ended November second in Chicago—the entire length of this historic highway—Stilwell was not

at a loss for words when it came to encouraging people to adopt shelter animals.

“Even if you adopt just one dog, you are making space in a shelter to save the life for another dog,” she

says. “The work that these participating shelters do each and every day is amazing. And, this kind of event

recognizes that and I am proud to be associated with it.”
