06 BERWICK LEADER, Monday, April 25, 2016 BLVE01Z01MA - V1 THREE stars from the Bea- consfield Junior Football Club will be among the top fe- male footballers defending Victoria’s title at this year’s AFL Youth Girls National Championships in May. Georgia Gee, 16, Tyla Hanks, 16, and Brooke Struy- laart, 15, were among 27 play- ers named last week in the Victoria Metro Youth Girls Squad. Held from May 2-6, the championships will see the most talented Under 18 fe- male footballers from across the country battle it out for the coveted national title. Beaconsfield Junior Foot- ball Club president Troy Rob- inson said the club has worked hard to ensure there were good opportunities for its female players. He said Beaconsfield has 24 teams in the South East Jun- iors Competition, including two full female teams: the Under 13 junior girls and the Under 18 youth girls. There is also an open age women’s team in the senior competit- ion. He said traditionally, girls and boys play in mixed teams until they reach the Under 14s – then girls could no longer play with the boys and effectively had nowhere to go. “Five years ago, we started a youth girls’ squad which has been very successful. They have won three prem- ierships out of four (they have played),’’ he said. “These three girls are absol- utely fantastic footballers, great ambassadors for the sport, very polite, very re- spectful and great athletes.” Georgia Gee, Tyla Hanks and Brooke Struylaart are Berwick Leader junior Sports Star nominees.
