Greenbelt:' s Architectural Charette Starts Move Toward ·center Redesign

city council and city staff, citizens and architects -perhaps 40 people total -met on Thursday, March 7, to plim a charette for the Center Mall. ·

A cbarette is derived from the French and refers to a short, intense period of time in which archi.tects work on a design. Drawings are. finished when the time is up. Origina11y, arc-hitec­tural students in France were given, for example, 48 hours to work on a project. At the end of that period, the professor would march down the aisle with a cart - 010lled a eharette - in which the students would place their drawings .. The process is still l.Wied in architectural schools today and has been adapted to

A second group will plan th~ orientation and logistics prior to the chare.tte. They will orovirl• a history of the city and relate important points about the com­munity to the nonresidents. They also will conduct a tour· of the city as W£"ll as of the Center and prepare the design group as much as po~si-ble to understand the many facffts bt the commun~ty.
