Volunteer Stroke Services

Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland improves the quality of lifefor people in Scotland affected by chest, heart and strokeillness through:

• medical research

• advice and information

• support in the community

Volunteer Stroke Services runby a member of CHSS staffsupported by a team of trainedvolunteers

Community Services are provided in two distinctsections:

Community ServicesNetwork – Affiliated strokegroups which are run byvolunteers or members asself help groups

Volunteer Stroke ServicesProvide a range of services which meet the needs of peoplewho have had a stroke which has resulted in communicationdifficulties.

Members, in consultation with staff, set their owncommunication based goals and work to move on to leisure,employment or social activities.

Group ServicesCore Conversation GroupsFor individuals with significantcommunication support needs.

Encourage and enable members toexpress their choices and opinionsusing a variety of ways ofcommunicating.

Social CommunicationGroupsAllow members to experience andenjoy social communicationthrough activities.

Communication support isprovided to include everyone.

“Drop In” ServicesMembers “drop in” ondesignated dates.

Provide information onopportunities and services.

Encourage members towardsindependence.

Outreach ServicesConversation Partner –Hospital based ServiceVolunteers work with patients on aone to one basis providingcommunication support.

Helps to reduce social isolationcreated by communication difficulties.

Conversation Partner –Community Outreach ServiceFor some people their main goal is to beindependent as soon as possible.

Communication support is provided toenable members to access services in thecommunity public transport, shopping etc.

Conversation Partner – Home Outreach ServiceVolunteers work with members on a oneto one basis.

Helps build on the communication skillsthey have been developing in hospital.

Focus on achieving the individual goals.Helps to build confidence to move on tomainstream community services.

These groups are affiliated to Chest Heart & StrokeScotland not provided by the charity.

The groups are as individual as the volunteer who runthem, reflecting local interests and diversity.

The principle of all groups is to support members to enjoyactivities.
