History:
Before ERP had been introduced, in 1960 there was MRP abbreviated as MATERIAL
REQUIREMENTS PLANNING which was then developed to MANUFACTURING RESOURCE PLANNING.
Later in 1990s, Gartner group coined the term ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING (ERP) which is anextension for Material Requirements Planning.
Here the ENTERPRISE is nothing but ORGANIZATION or company.
RESOURCES: internal departments like Sales, Finance, Material Management, HR etc;
PLANNING: PLANS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE COMPANY.
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) integrates internal and external management information
across an entire organization, embracing finance/accounting, manufacturing, sales and service,
etc.
ERP systems automate this activity with an integrated software application. Its purpose is to
facilitate the flow of information between all business functions inside the boundaries of the
organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders.
Examples of ERP vendors:
SAP, ORACLE, Microsoft etc;
SAP (SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS AND PRODUCTS):
SAP was founded in June 1972 as Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung ("System Analysis
and Program Development") by five former IBM engineers. The acronym was later changed to
stand for Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung ("Systems,
Applications and Products in Data Processing"). SAP AG became the company's official name
after the 2005 annual general meeting. AG is short for Aktiengesellschaft (corporation).
SAP AG is a German software corporation that provides enterprise software applications and
support to businesses of all sizes globally. Headquartered in Walldorf, Germany, with regional
offices around the world, SAP is the largest enterprise software company in the world (as of
2009). The company's best known products are its SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (SAP ERP)and SAP Business Objects software.
In November, 2010, SAP lost a $1.3 billion intellectual property law suit (related to the actions
of the SAP subsidiary TomorrowNow ) to Oracle Corporation - cited as the largest software
piracy judgment in history.
