Readings for August 5

Reading 1: Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15 Reading 2: Ephesians 4:17, 20-24

Gospel: John 6:24-35

The Rosary is a wonderful way to pray for people in your life. As Mary intercedes for us to the Father, so too can we intercede for those in our lives that need our prayers. If you would like to lead the rosary on Monday evenings, individually or as a family, please contact the church office at 205.822.9125 to schedule. Materials are provided in the chapel for the Rosary.

Devotional Series The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The physical heart of Mary is venerated (and not adored as the Sacred Heart of Jesus is) because it is united to her person: and as the seat of her love (especially for her divine Son), virtue, and inner life. Such devotion is an incentive to a similar love and virtue. This devotion has received new emphasis in this century from the visions given to Lucy Dos Santos, oldest of the visionaries of Fatima, in her convent in Tuy, Spain in 1925 and 1926. On October 31, 1942, Pope Pius XII made a solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart. Let us remember this devotion year-round, but particularly through the month of August: O heart most pure of the Blessed Virgin Mary, obtain for me from Jesus a pure and humble heart.

Don’t forget to pray for the Holy Father’s Intentions for August: General Intention: That prisoners may be treated with justice and respect for their human dignity. Missionary Intention: Youth Witness to Christ. That young people, called to follow Christ, may be willing to proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

Scriptural Rosary A Scriptural Rosary recital is held at 8:30 am on the first Saturday morning of each month in the Day Chapel. In the Scriptural Rosary, one or two lines from the Bible, appropriate to the rosary decade being meditated on, are said before each Hail Mary. Dedications for personal and family intentions are welcome. Please bring your family, children and friends on August 4. All you have to do is join in saying the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be or just pray along silently. You will find this is an easy and concise way to meditate on the mystery of Christ’s life, a refreshing way to start the weekend and pray to our Blessed Mother. This Rosary is supported by the Prince of Peace Knights of Columbus Council 11537.

Great Basilicas of the Mediterranean During its early years, Christianity developed in the region of the Mediterranean Sea. The journeys of St. Peter, St. Paul and other disciples spread the Gospel of Jesus to communities that constructed impressive basilicas to honor God and foster the devotion of the faithful. Prince of Peace Parish will feature four of these magnificent basilicas in a four-part summer educational series facilitated by Mike Brown, Director of Adult Education. Sessions will meet in the St. Monica Room on Sundays from 9:40 to 10:50 am on July 8, 15, 22, 29. Videos, photographs and narratives will present these churches in the context of their major historical and architectural significance.

July 29 Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) is the most recent of the featured basilicas and, indeed, was just consecrated in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. Construction began in 1882 and will continue at least until 2026. The mastermind behind this amazing structure was noted Barcelona architect Antoni Gaudi who devoted more than 40 years of his life to its realization. Designed in the neo-gothic style with soaring towers that dominate Barcelona’s skyline, it is now the most popular tourist destination in the city. Gaudi’s designs incorporate numerous elements of nature both in exterior and interior components.

RCIA Classes Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults classes will be offered during 2012-13 on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The first session is scheduled for September 19 in the St. Jude Room. RCIA is a program for people interested in the Catholic faith and offers an opportunity to receive the Sacraments of Initiation for full inclusion in the Church at the Easter Vigil service on March 30. A wide range of Catholic beliefs and practices will be covered, so the program may also be appropriate for people who have returned to the Church after an absence or for those who would like to know more about the fundamentals of the faith. Class topics are announced in the parish bulletin. Registration forms will be available at the information desk. For additional information, contact Mike Brown, director of adult education, at 205.822.9125, or by e-mail at [email protected].

Just Faith When was the last time you had an experience that was “soul satisfying?” If you are looking to encounter your faith in a way that challenges you and how you are to live as a Christian in today’s world, the JustFaith may be for you. For 30 weeks you journey with other community members using books, videos, conversation, and encounters with those who live at the margins of society. The program runs on Monday night from 6:30-9:00 pm from September 24 to May 17. It’s truly an awe-inspiring experience! For more information contact Tara Wilkinson at 205.586.5057 or [email protected].

Back to School Health Fair Our church in cooperation with Birmingham Health Care organized a Back to School Health Fair on July 21st. The event was a great success in which we gave out book bags and school supplies to approximately 700 children of all ages. In addition 25 organizations from the Birmingham area provided health care for blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests, dental, eye, and hearing care, etc. The Knights of Columbus provided the funds for the food and the Hispanic Knights of Columbus grilled the hot dogs and served the food. We thank the parish leadership for allowing us to use the Prince of Peace facilities for the fair. We thank the Knights of Columbus, Christians in Action, and all the parishioners that provided book bags and school supplies for this event. WE also extend our thanks to all of the volunteers and organizations that participated in the fair. We plan to have a bigger Back to School Health Fair next year. Many Thanks, The Prince of Peace Hispanic Social Services Board

Parish Directory Update Please help us keep our database of family contact information current. If your address, phone number, email address, etc., has changed, please complete a Prince of Peace Directory Update Form and place it in the basket located at the Welcome Desk or send an email to [email protected]. We have a number of families with no email address recorded. Since we have moved to email as the primary means for communication, we want to ensure that you are not missing important Parish announcements! Thank you!

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s Call When the Catholic Social Services office moved to Oxmoor Road a few months ago, a parishioner volunteered her time to develop an area on the property for an organic vegetable garden. A few others were recruited to help with the planting, weeding, watering and picking of the vegetables. Many people, who would not have had access to fresh vegetables, or need help with special needs, have been served by this ministry. One poignant example is a family with a young child, undergoing cancer treatments, who is on a restricted diet. They are being helped with fresh, organic vegetables from this garden. No special skills needed, just willingness to answer God’s call to stewardship. Help us! Please submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.

This is particularly time sensitive for volunteers in the Fall programs (e.g., Sunday School, MS and HS Youth Groups, coaching, field trips, etc.). You can find the complete schedule of classes at www.bhmdiocese.org under “Child and Youth Protection Information.” The next available class being taught at Prince of Peace will be August 22, 6:00-8:00 pm in Deasy Hall. You can register by calling the Religious Education Office at 205.822.9125 and leaving your name and phone number. Childcare will be provided. Include the number of children and their ages in the message.
