Breaking Open The Word
December 3, 2017
First Sunday of Advent
First Reading: Isaiah 63:16b-17,19b, 64:2-7 In this straightforward psalm, the people acknowledge their sinful ways, yet plead that their Creator might reveal himself to them. They ask God to remember, not their sins, but that “We are all the work of your hands.” Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Paul explains to the Corinthians that they are specially favored by God who has sent His only Son to them. He reminds us all that it was through God’s grace that we have been called to kinship with Christ. Gospel: Mark 13:33-37 Just as a servant watching over the master’s house does not know when he will return, we do not know the hour of the Second Coming. Mark reminds us of the warning from Jesus to always be on guard, for we know not the day nor the hour. Consider/Reflect: In Advent we prepare God’s way by placing ourselves into the hands of our potter, God, by becoming more mindful that we constantly live in God’s presence. In Advent we call upon God’s name to make a difference in our world. We experience that difference by living in the peace we seek, becoming the nonviolence we desire, and affirming the uniqueness of persons to proclaim that our diverse lives matter. Christ is born again at Christmas through us. God rouses power and comes to save our world through us. When we turn to God in abundance, in need, or in between, we become alert to God’s presence in our midst. Alert, we are ready whenever Christ returns, and the heavens are rent, the earth quakes and true peace transforms us and our world. Pray. Listen. Watch, so that God finds us doing right. Be clay in the hands of a God who wants to transform us more clearly into being and seeing the face of Jesus Christ, who came to make known the power of God’s saving love.
In preparation for the next weekend’s liturgy, We cite the following:

HEALTH “TIP” OF THE MONTH
Multivitamins and Healthy Eating Do you take a Multivitamin? Why do you take them? Most people say it makes them feel healthier but in the last few years, there is more evidence that Multivitamins may not provide the benefit desired by consumers. Do you eat a well-balanced diet? If so, you may not need a Multivitamin. Are you concerned about diseases? If so, make changes in your diet and exercise habits and don’t smoke. Consider your current state of health and talk to your doctor about your concerns, diet and the use of a Multivitamin.

Women have abortions for many different reasons. As a result, so many women experience emotional and psychological traumas and may have many questions: Can God ever forgive me? Can my child? Can I ever forgive myself? Will the Church forgive me? Will this pain ever leave me?
The answer to all these questions is YES!!! Rachel's Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild and redeem hearts broken by abortion. Rachel's Vineyard can help you find your inner voice; it is therapy for the soul. Here’s the website www.hopeafterabortion.com.

SUNDAY & CHRISTMAS MASSES
There has been some confusion about Sunday Mass and Christmas Eve Mass due to Christmas Eve falling on Sunday. So, here’s the scoop! You must attend either Saturday Night (Dec. 23rd) or Sunday Morning Mass (Dec. 24th) in order to fulfill your Sunday obligation. Christmas Day is a holy day of obligation; therefore you must attend either Sunday evening Mass (Dec. 24th) or Monday Morning (Dec. 25th) to fulfill the holy day obligation.
Hopefully, we’ll all be “doubly” blessed this
Christmas Season! EDITOR’S NOTE: FYI. Christmas Day was last on a Monday in 2006, an 11 year gap caused by days being skipped over by a leap year. Christmas Day was on a Sunday in 2011, but skipped Monday in 2012 as it was a leap year.
ANNUAL CHRISTMAS SHARING PROGRAM
Please bring the toy or gift with the tag attached to Church on:
December 9th & 10th
Please buy only 1 toy for 1 tag. TOYS MUST BE BRAND NEW &
UNWRAPPED! (No gift bags please!) We will gladly take any extra toys (no tag
necessary) you would like to donate. They are always welcomed & appreciated.
Monetary donations are also accepted. If you do not wish to purchase a toy, we will purchase one for you. We also use the money to purchase coats, boots, shoes, clothes, etc. or other needs of the children that we become aware of.
Thank you for your continued support of our program.
