Breaking Open The Word
January 21, 2018
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Jonah set out for Nineveh as God asked and told the people that their city would be destroyed in forty days. The people believed him and repented from their evil ways. God did not destroy their city, showing his mercy for those who see the evil of their ways and correct it. Second Reading: 1-Corinthians 7:29-31 Paul advises the Corinthians that their world is changing, so they should not take their daily trials too seriously. We should remember that the problems of everyday living will not last forever, but the eternal life God promises us will. Gospel: Mark 1:14-20 Jesus observes Simon and Andrew where they are fishing and tells them to come with Him and become “fishers of men.” They abandon their nets without hesitation to follow Him. Next he calls James and his brother John who also leave what they are doing and follow Him without question. Consider/Reflect: We meet Jesus as He begins His public ministry as reported by Mark. In summary form the gospel writer tells us what will follow. The message of Jesus is quite clear: Repent and Believe. In a few weeks we will hear those same words, as the blessed ashes are traced upon our foreheads. This external sign reflects the disposition of our hearts. I ask myself, if I not only hear the words, but listen to them. As Jesus invited the two sets of brothers to join Him in His ministry so He calls us today because this is the time of fulfillment as we are Missionary Disciples. If I truly believe the gospel is the Good News of Jesus, I walk with Him and bring His message to others. How do you handle changes in your life?

Healing the Wounds of Abortion
The psychological and spiritual wounds of abortion can be sharp, deep and crippling. You may feel a deep numbness and may not be able to name the pain or recognize any of the symptoms. It can also have a devastating impact on the father or grandparents of the aborted child and friend/s of the mother. You do not have to continue to hide in shame and fear. Rachel’s Vineyard’s Retreat is a chance to focus on this painful time in your life through a supportive non-judgmental process in an atmosphere of confidentiality, understanding, and compassion. It is designed to help both women and men experience the mercy and compassion of God. If you have suffered through an abortion and have isolated yourself from healing and forgiveness, you might consider attending one of our retreat weekends. For more information, contact Judy Warenkiewicz at 732-536-6871. All inquiries are strictly confidential.

HEARING LOOP SYSTEM
For those of us living with hearing loss, it is often difficult to understand the words spoken during Mass due to the challenging acoustical listening environment. In an effort to improve clarity and understanding, we have received a donation and installed an induction loop listening system. To benefit from this system, you will need to select a seat in the 2 sections of pews (when facing the Altar), to the left of the Baptismal Font and switch your hearing aid, cochlear implant or other listening device to the “T-Coil” or “telephone” position.
OUR LADY OF LOURDES
Our Lady of Lourdes is available for a weekly home visit each week after the 11:30 AM Mass. She is to be returned the following Saturday. The veneration of the Virgin Mary can take many forms for your prayerful devotion to her. Shrine information and the sign-up book are in the Gathering Space.

HEALTH “TIP” OF THE MONTH
Women and Heart Disease
Heart Disease is the number one cause of death for women ages 20 and over killing approx. one woman every minute. Women often know the typical signs of a heart attack, but women are less likely to experience typical chest pain. In women, shortness of breath or vague chest discomfort is most commonly associated with a heart attack. Additionally the following atypical symptoms may occur:
Upper body pain or discomfort in one or both arms, back. shoulder, neck or jaw
Nausea and/or vomiting Indigestion Weakness and/or unusual fatigue Sudden dizziness and/or lightheadedness Fatigue
Pay attention if you experience one or a combination of these symptoms; if they are mild; call your doctor as they could indicate an imminent heart attack; if they are severe, call 911.
CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS
for tax purposes If you would like a statement of your 2017
contributions, call Mazie at the Parish Office on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday or leave a voicemail – 609-296-2504 ext. 225.
Tax statements require a week’s notice. We can mail them to you, or you may pick it up at the office. Please note: Same day contribution statements are not available.
ACTIVE PARISHIONER STATUS We receive many requests for parishioners to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to rightfully enjoy the many services offered to parishioners at the Parish of St. Theresa. Part of that request is to verify that a person is an “active member”. These are the main factors that will be considered in making the determination.
