Planting and Harvesting

~ Farming was one of the HARDEST of ALL

1. Prepare Soil      ~ dig up fields with plows and hoes

2. Bring Water to Fields     ~ dig irrigation canals and haul water using shadoufs

3. Often called by government to help build canals, temples, or tombs for the pharaoh

4. Harvest Time     ~ women, men, and children cut, stack, and carry grain        (imagine this in the BLAZING SUN!)

5. Loading     ~ load cut stalks into baskets and separate them

A Busy Neighborhood

~ House opened into a noisy, busy, alley~ Entrance room served as a workshop ~ Small living room, followed by 1 or 2 bedrooms~ Stairway to flat roof ­ a cool place on summer nights

EVERYDAY CHORES:~ Women: gather water from canal, balance buckets on heads~ Women: bake bread: huge part of Egyptian diet~ Men & Women: Go to the market to buy and to sell items
