As the official Canadian airline of the Games, Porter is busy preparing for the events, devoting its Weekender spot in this issue of re:porter to exploring the Yellow Brick Road that is the Pan Am Path. You’ll find pages 23 to 29 packed with information, while in other sections we visit the Toronto Music Garden and talk to top Toronto media executive John Cassaday. With the Pan Am Games kicking off on July 10, followed by the Parapan Am Games on August 7, all eyes will be on our hometown this summer, and Torontonians will enjoy the best seats in the house. It’s easy to lose yourself in Corktown. In this old Toronto neighbourhood, situated on the easternmost edge of the downtown core, the grid system falls apart to make way for concrete overpasses, dead-end streets and narrow laneways. Reportedly named after Irish settlers who arrived from County Cork in the early 1800s, today Corktown is home to a diverse mix of residents, living in refurbished Victorian homes, converted warehouses and shiny new condos. With nearby development under way for the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, new restaurants, cafés and shops continue to pop up. Unlike Toronto’s über-hip and over-saturated west end, here, because of more-affordable rents and less competition, there’s plenty of room for young and established entrepreneurs alike to experiment. Their results are surprising, refreshingly different and definitely worth checking out. Il est facile de se perdre à Corktown. I opened my gallery here because this area is developing quickly. There are a lot of artists around who would like to see more urban galleries working with local emerging talents. Television ManAs the recently retired president and CEO of Corus Entertainment, John Cassaday has been responsible for the oversight of one of Canada’s premier media companies, with 22 television brands, 39 radio stations and a world-renowned animation studio among its assets. I was at Corus for 17 years, and before that was president of the CTV Television Network. The biggest change in that time has been the impact that technology has had on our industry. When I came into the business a quarter of a century ago, there were very few channels. Today it’s a much more complex business, and so much more fragmented. The power has shifted entirely into consumers’ hands – they now get to choose when and where they watch and listen to programs, on whatever platform they want. Television needs to stay agile. Those who cling to the past are doomed to perish. There are tremendous advantages to having well-established brands like YTV, W Network and Q107; consumers trust us as curators.

The fundamentals haven’t changed. Corus still wants to create great content that people talk about. This is actually the golden age of television. Look at shows like Homeland or Boardwalk Empire. They’re leaps ahead of anything that was being done 15 or 20 years ago. The competition from digital has caused everyone to sharpen their saw.

Corus is a global producer of children’s programming. With kids’ TV in particular, and the programs it produces through its Nelvana studio, education is vitally important, but it has to be wrapped in some fun and frivolity. There’s a great quote from Bart Simpson, when he says to Homer: “TV’s spent more time raising me than you have.” Corus feels that sense of responsibility.

Corus HQ, on the Toronto lakefront, is all glass, with no internal doors or floor-to-ceiling walls, and I think the physical space helps shape the company culture. One of its most important core values is teamwork – there is around 2,000 staff at Corus – and the building is completely democratic. Everyone has identical workstations, clear lines of sight and the ability to interact with each other.

I’m a big planner. I have always started the week with a detailed agenda of what I want to accomplish. In managing people, I believe in being visible – not difficult when you don’t have doors. Corus conducts quarterly town halls in the building’s atrium. I sent a handwritten note to every single individual who got promoted or was celebrating a significant anniversary with us. My experience is that people want to be caught doing something right. Making someone feel like a rock star can never be a bad thing.

J’étais chez Corus pour 17 ans et avant cela, j’étais pré-sident de CTV Television Network. Le plus grand chan-gement que j’aie vu est l’impact de la technologie sur notre secteur. À mes débuts dans ce domaine, il y a 25 ans, il y avait peu de chaînes. Aujourd’hui, c’est un marché plus complexe et fragmenté. Ce sont désormais les consommateurs qui ont le pouvoir – ils peuvent choisir quand et où regarder leurs pro-grammes sur la plateforme de leur choix. Les chaînes sont obligés de rester vigilantes et alertes. Ceux qui restent dans le passé sont condamnés à disparaître. Le gros avantage que Corus possède est d’avoir des marques bien établies comme YTV, W Network et Q107. Les consommateurs nous traitent comme des conservateurs de programmes.

Les fondamentaux n’ont pas changé. Corus veut tou-jours créer de bons programmes dont les gens par-leront. Nous vivons l’âge d’or de la télévision. Prenez des séries comme Homeland ou Boardwalk Empire. Elles sont à des années lumière de ce qui se faisait il y a 15 ou 20 ans. La concurrence créée par le numérique a obligé tout le secteur à élever son niveau.

Corus est également un producteur mondial d’émis-sions pour enfants. Avec la télévision pour enfants, en particulier, et les programmes produits par son studio de Nel-vana, l’aspect éducatif a un rôle crucial, mais il faut le présen-ter sous un format divertissant. J’aime cette citation de Bart Simpson qui dit à Homer : « J’ai davantage été élevé par la télé que par toi. » Corus est conscient de ses responsabilités.

Le siège de Corus, sur la rive du lac à Toronto, est tout en verre et il n’a ni cloisons, ni portes internes. Je pense que cet espace influe grandement sur la culture de l’entreprise. L’une de ses valeurs essentielles est le tra-vail en équipe – nous avons environ 2 000 employés chez Corus et le bâtiment est une grande démocratie. Tous ont le même poste de travail, une vue dégagée et la possibilité d’interaction avec les autres.

J’aime tout planifier. Je commençais ma semaine en établissant un agenda détaillé de mes objectifs. Pour gérer les ressources humaines, je tenais à être visible – ce qui n’est pas difficile comme il n’y a pas de portes. Une fois par trimestre, Corus réunit tout le monde dans l’atrium. J’envoyais une note manuscrite à tous ceux qui avaient une promotion ou qui célèbraient un anniversaire important chez nous. Mon expérience est que les gens veulent qu’on recon-naissent leur réussite. Donner à quelqu’un l’impression qu’il est une rock star ne peut pas faire de mal.

Pendant des années, j’ai géré une entreprise qui faisait des soupes – Campbell’s – au Canada et au Royaume-Uni. Quand on m’a demandé de prendre la tête d’un réseau télé, cela a été un véritable coup de tonnerre. Mais je crois à la chance dans la vie et dans le travail. Quand je suis arrivé à CTV, le slogan était « Après la soupe, les pieds dans les plats », car ils connaissaient de gros problèmes à l’époque. Mais après 25 ans dans la radiodiffusion je suis tout récem-ment à la retraite et j’ai vécu une expérience merveilleuse.

Je pourrais sans doute être contrôleur aérien de rechange pour Porter. De ma fenêtre, je pouvais voir pra-tiquement tous les avions. Il ne me fallait que vingt minutes pour me rendre à l’aéroport, une aubaine. Je voyage tout le temps. J’ai dû parcourir des millions de kilomètres et je suis un véritable globe-trotter. Porter est une ligne aérienne « point à point » géniale et d’un accès extraordinairement facile

I ran a soup company – Campbell’s – in Canada and the United Kingdom for many years. When I got the call to run a TV network, it was like a bolt of lightning. But I believe in the role of serendipity in our lives and careers. The headline when I was hired at CTV was “From Soup to Nuts,” because the company was going through some tough challenges at the time. But here I am, just retired after 25 years in broadcasting, and it has been a fabulous run.

I could probably serve as Porter’s backup air traffic control. Virtually every plane was visible from my window at Corus. I can get to the airport in about 20 minutes, which is such a boon. My life is about travel; I’ve logged millions of miles in my time, and I’m a true road warrior. Porter is a great point-to-point airline, and it’s extraordinarily accessible to downtown. I look for schedule, flexibility, comfort and service, and it fulfills on all counts.

I always endeavour to get the aisle seat in row one, and that’s because I always work on the plane from the minute I get on to the minute I get off. It’s my favourite place to work, because I’m guaranteed no interruptions and I get so much done.

The best TV show of all time? The one I’ve enjoyed the most would be Breaking Bad. The one I’ve most enjoyed recently is The Newsroom, which happens to be on HBO Canada, a Corus network. I love well-written dramas and great stories. I’ve embraced binge-watching; I’m doing it right now with Sons of Anarchy.

As far as retirement goes, I think we owe it to ourselves to reinvent ourselves. I read a quote recently from Peter Thiel, the creator of PayPal: “We have to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.” That’s the challenge in making the leap from broadcasting, maybe into something completely different, whether that’s assuming another CEO role, going into venture capital or taking a more active role with the boards I sit on. I’m keeping an open mind. But I think it won’t involve pipes and slippers just yet. Although there may be time for a little more binge-watching •

J’adore regarder plein d’épisodes de suite; en ce moment je suis en plein dans Sons of Anarchy.

En matière de retraite, je suis persuadé que nous nous devons de nous réinventer. J’ai récemment lu une cita-tion de Peter Thiel, le fondateur de PayPal : « Nous devons apprendre à accepter de sortir de notre zone de confort. » C’est le défi à relever lorsque je quitterai la radiodiffusion pour quelque chose de potentiellement différent. – a City of Toronto park – rests on the edge of the waterfront, in view of the CN Tower and the Toronto Islands, and the space would never have come to be without the collaboration of Fleck, Ma, the city and the Harbourfront Centre. In fact, it almost didn’t end up here at all.

The garden was conceived by Ma and landscape architect Julie Moir Messervy as a physical manifestation of the power of music based on J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1. Ma and Messervy imagined a space that captured the spirit of the suite, with each section of the garden representing a different movement. They found a site for their vision in Boston, near Ma’s hometown of Cambridge, and started filming a documentary about realizing the project. But when scheduling conflicts held up construction, they needed to find a new home for the suite in time to fulfill the film schedule. Ma was performing Dvo ák in Toronto and ran into Fleck at intermission. Fleck agreed to help him make the garden a reality, and a series of fortunate circumstances – a perfect (if you had a good imagination) swath of land on the waterfront, the support of then-mayor Barbara Hall and Fleck’s fundraising efforts – brought this unique space to Queens Quay.

In a book she penned on the making of the garden, Messervy quotes philosopher Susanne K. Langer, who called architecture “frozen music.” Music flows through time, writes Messervy, and gardens flow through space. From the moment Ma mailed Messervy a CD of Bach’s suite with a note saying that he had “an idea about combining music and the growth of a garden,” the planning process was about transforming the feel of the suite to different forms, giving it a series of tangible lives. Messervy learned the suite on the piano and played it for friends, asking them to write down what came to them as they listened to the piece. She settled on a space with six “rooms,” capturing each movement of the suite, planned on a series of three rolling hills, so the experience of walking through the garden would echo the journey of listening to Bach’s composition. There are playful nods to the garden’s inspiration throughout the site: a parallel path of trees suggests a time signature, musical details are present in the

Collaboration, transformation and community are three concepts that seem to permeate each evolution of the garden over the past 15 years. Fleck (who considers himself the garden’s chief cheerleader), the city and Harbourfront Centre ensure that visitors can enjoy the space, which is free and wheelchair-accessible, year-round. Devoted caretakers from the City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division ensure the stunning collection of horticulture boasted in the six distinct areas of the garden is thriving. Guests can learn about its unique inspirations from a virtual tour, or its horticulture from one of the volunteer docents who visit from the Toronto Botanical Gardens to lead free guided walks of the space.

But the moments that seem to mean the most to all involved with the garden are the free live music performances every Thursday and Sunday during the summer, programmed by the Harbourfront Centre. The garden hosts some 5,000 guests for its annual concert series, which are, for many, a highlight of summers spent in the city. Like the garden, they are the product of collaboration; the music takes on new life in the natural space, a landscape of calm where the city meets the lake. Fleck remembers the Cecilia Quartet as one of his favourite regular performers. Rachel Desoer,

Vue du ciel, la forme en spirale du jardin rappelle le mouvement de la main d’un chef d’orchestre.

a member of the quartet, describes the Music Garden performance as “a yearly tradition” that renews their connection to the Toronto community. Musicians highlight the diversity of the crowd – “close enough that we could make eye contact,” says Cookie Segelstein of the Veretski Pass Trio – as one of the most wonderful things about the program. From taiko drums to Indonesian gamelan to First Nations cedar flute, these free concerts, curated by Tamara Bernstein, make a world of music accessible. Some visitors come every week and have made the performances a seasonal tradition; others are drawn in by the music as they jog by with their dogs. The space is truly what you make it.

Ma considers the garden to be one of the most significant accomplishments of his life. On the day the garden opened, Fleck, Ma and the other partners set out to film the musician playing each section of the suite in the part of the garden it inspired. Some student musicians from the Royal Conservatory were on hand to accompany him. When they arrived at the garden after lunch, something was wrong – Ma’s cello had been left behind. He grabbed an instrument from one of the students, who, to this day, remembers how beautiful his instrument sounded in the hands of the master •

Aussi, il emprunta l’instrument d’un élève qui, aujourd’hui encore, se souvient combien sa musique était merveilleuse dans les mains du maître •

Cet été, tous les yeux d’un hémisphère seront braqués sur Toronto qui accueillera les Jeux panaméricains du 10 au 26 juillet et les Jeux para panaméricains du 7 au 15 août. Avec 10 000 athlètes, 250 000 visiteurs, 51 sports, 41 pays et 50 sites, et assez de prouesses sportives pour durer près d’un mois, on pourrait dire que c’est à l’échelle olympique. Ces jeux dépassent toutefois les Jeux Olympiques d’été de Montréal en 1976, et les Jeux d’hiver de Vancouver en 2010 : ce serait le plus grand événement multisports jamais organisé au Canada.

Le suivre dans son ensemble est un projet colossal, car à l’inverse d’autres jeux concentrés dans un endroit, ceux-ci sont dispersés dans tout Toronto et dans 16 municipalités des environs. Choisissez les sports qui vous intéressent et faites du Golden Horseshoe – la partie de l’Ontario qui épouse le lac – votre terrain de jeu durant cet événement. C’est un peu le parent oublié des paysages canadiens et pourtant, sa topographie d’une variété surprenante est parsemée de ce qui était jadis de petites villes. Aujourd’hui, ce sont des centres urbains proches de nombreux sites des Jeux. Ce sera aussi l’opportunité pour les résidents de Toronto et de la région de faire du tourisme sur le pas de leur porte en explorant des destinations souvent négligées. Les berges du lac Ontario, bordées de belles plages et falaises, constituent un ruban d’eau douce, véritable fil conducteur entre les sites. Si tout cela ne vous transforme pas en explorateur, il y a même une nouvelle Route de Briques Jaunes à suivre : le Pan Am Path.

A hemisphere’s worth of eyes will be on Toronto this summer as it hosts the Pan Am Games from July 10 to 26 and the Parapan Am Games from August 7 to 15. With 10,000 athletes, 250,000 visitors, 51 sports, 41 countries and 50 venues, and enough sporting fun to last nearly a month, you could say it’s Olympian in scale, but the Games are even bigger than the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and said to be the largest international multi-sport event ever hosted in Canada.

Negotiating it all is a daunting prospect; unlike other multi-sport events concentrated in one place, the Games are spread throughout Toronto itself and 16 municipalities in the surrounding region. Pick the sports you want to see and treat the Golden Horseshoe – this part of Ontario that wraps around Lake Ontario – as your playground during the Games. As Canadian landscapes go, it’s unsung territory, an often surprisingly varied topography dotted with what were once small towns but are now urban centres near many of the venues. The Games are also an opportunity for the people who live in and around Toronto to be tourists in their own backyard, exploring destinations that are often overlooked. Think of the Lake Ontario shoreline, filled with beautiful beaches and bluffs, as a freshwater ribbon connecting it all together. But if that isn’t enough to get you exploring, there’s even a new Yellow Brick Road to follow: the Pan Am Path.

“The vision of the Pan Am Path is to combine the power of art and sport to create a path across Toronto,” says Devon Ostrom, lead curator and co-founder of Friends of the Pan Am Path. “The Pan Am Path is an 84-kilometre, multi-use trail across Toronto and an active living legacy for the 2015 Games.” In the spring and summer the path will be brought to life with a 14-week-long arts relay that will pass by community-driven art projects along the route. The path begins in the northwest corner of Toronto by the Humber Arboretum, the sprawling botanical gardens along the Humber River, containing over 1,700 species of plants and animals, making this place, found within Toronto’s city limits, one of the most diverse ecosystems in Canada. The path follows

the Humber from there down to Lake Ontario where it runs along the waterfront, passing through downtown Toronto, and continues up the Don Valley, crossing through the unexpectedly lush Gatineau hydro corridor to Highland Creek where it meanders back to Lake Ontario and eventually Rouge Beach at the Pickering border. Befitting the sporting nature of the event, it encourages visitors to use their own steam to see the Games. Ostrom suggests that people check the path’s website (panampath.org) for the events calendar and a map designed for out-of-towners that can be downloaded ahead of time to save on data fees.

Though it doesn’t reach the municipalities that are farther afield, the Pan Am Path does connect four venues along its route and can be used as inspiration to venture out and discover locations that stretch from Oshawa to Welland. The Pan Am Games website (toronto2015.org) lists all the ways to reach each venue, including extensive public transportation and cycling options. There are shuttles from train stations to the venues, but in the spirit of the Pan Am Path, take your bike on a GO Transit train or bus and explore the surrounding area, too. As you choose the sports and locations you’d like to see, go to the Pan Am Games ticketing website to easily purchase available tickets (toronto2015.org/tickets).

De là, le chemin suit la rivière jusqu’au lac Ontario dont il épouse ensuite la rive, traverse le centre-ville et continue en remontant la vallée Don avant de traverser l’Hydro Corridor de Gatineau, à la végétation luxuriante, jusqu’à Highland Creek, d’où il retourne au lac Ontario pour finalement atteindre Rouge Beach à la limite de Pickering. En accord avec le genre de l’événement, il encourage les visiteurs à utiliser leurs muscles pour se rendre sur les sites des Jeux. Think of Union Station as your Games hub, and if you are from out of town, stay at the brand new Delta Toronto hotel, connected to the station by Toronto’s underground PATH system. The 40-storey, slender glass hotel is replete with works of art inspired by Canada itself, like Superior by art superstar Douglas Coupland. Inspired by Lawren Harris’s 1926 painting North Shore, Lake Superior, the installation climbs a few storeys up the outside of the building. The Delta is in the city’s new South Core neighbourhood, just two blocks from the Rogers Centre, site of both the opening and closing ceremonies. The Pan Am Path passes just two blocks south of here on Queens Quay near HTO Park, its design inspired by Georges Seurat’s painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Fashionably recharge between sporting events by sitting in a Muskoka chair on HTO’s urban beach. The Delta also connects to Union Station, which provides subway, bus and train access to the venues farther away. The station also has plenty of rental car options should cycling not be your preferred way to get around.

Visitors have two options for bike rentals in downtown Toronto. For short jaunts use your credit card to rent a bike at one of the automated Bike Share stations found on the sidewalks throughout the central core. Check the Bike Share website for locations (bikesharetoronto.com) and ride from station to station, leaving and picking up a bike. For longer rentals, walk over to Wheel Excitement, at 249 Queens Quay West, just west of Harbourfront Centre, and rent a mountain or hybrid bike for the day.

Once you’re kitted out, take the Pan Am Path west to the Pan Am Park at the Canadian National Exhibition and Ontario Place sites. Together there are five venues here, with events that include open water swimming in Lake Ontario, beach volleyball, rugby, gymnastics and the marathon. Once your events have ended, don’t miss the party; head a few blocks north and wander the King, Queen or Dundas Street strips for an after-sport drink and bite – these neighbourhoods are sure to be filled with people lingering late into the evening during the Games.

To the east follow the path to the Athletes Village in the Corktown neighbourhood, one of the major hubs of the Games. If you’re intrepid, continue up the Don Valley and east to the Aquatics Centre and Tennis Centre at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus. Stop by the Evergreen Brick Works, a former industrial site that is now an environmental and arts centre with a reclaimed wetland, on the way for a bite to eat or a drink at its pleasant Cafe Belong. The journey will take a few hours, so most people will opt to take public transit, but once there head into the Highland Creek ravine next to the campus. A unique network of ravine systems meander through Toronto, and you’re as likely to see a deer grazing or salmon swimming as you are a world record being broken during the Games.

Markham, just north of Toronto, is well worth exploring even though it’s not on the path. The Markham Pan Am Centre is in the new and ever-growing city centre, which now has an impressive skyline. It’s accessible by a direct GO Transit train line from Union Station, and you can take in a table tennis, badminton or water polo match at the centre, then head a few blocks north to the Unionville neighbourhood, the original heart of Markham, where shops, cafés and restaurants, such as the charming Blacksmiths Bistro, are clustered along the historic Main Street in what is one of Toronto’s most multicultural suburbs. While here be sure to explore the banks of the Rouge River and Toogood Pond Park, just a block from Main Street, where a rather dramatic,

Juste au nord de Toronto, Markham vaut le détour même si ce n’est pas sur le chemin. Le Centre Pan Am de Markham est au centre de cette ville en pleine expansion qui a désormais une ligne d’horizon impressionnante. On y accède par un train GO Transit direct depuis la gare Union. Là, vous assisterez à des matchs de tennis de table, badminton ou water-polo. À quelques rues au nord, se trouve le voisinage d’Unionville, cœur de Markham, où boutiques, cafés et restaurants tels que le charmant Blacksmiths Bistro se pressent sur la vénérable rue Main. C’est l’une des banlieues les plus multiculturelles de Toronto. N’oubliez pas de voir les rives de la rivière Rouge et le parc Toogood Pond, à un coin de rue de là. C’est aussi à deux pas du plus gros relief de la région : l’escarpement du Niagara. À quelques minutes de voiture du vélodrome ou du centre-ville de Milton, un peu plus à vélo, se trouve Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area, un lieu hanté par les alpinistes que l’on peut voir accrochés aux parois de calcaire les beaux jours d’été. Le chemin circulaire qui suit le sommet des falaises offre un panorama superbe sur une biosphère protégée des Nations unies. Les bons marcheurs peuvent aussi rejoindre la Bruce Trail.

De retour à Toronto, pédalez ou prenez le métro jusqu’au Varsity Stadium et Pan Am Fields sur le principal campus de l’Université de Toronto. Une fois satisfait votre appétit de tir à l’arc et de hockey, passez par le Quartier chinois sur Spadina Avenue et Kensington Market, deux endroits très animés. If riding along the Pan Am Path gets you excited about cycling, head west to Milton for events at the new velodrome. Like Markham, Milton has its own downtown to explore, as well as its own Main Street, which feels more like the centre of a small Ontario town than a Toronto bedroom community. It’s also adjacent to the most impressive landform in the region: the Niagara Escarpment. Just minutes from either the velodrome or downtown Milton by car, or a little longer by bike, is Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area, a favourite haunt of local rock climbers, who can be seen making their way up the limestone cliffs on nice summer days. A circular trail along the cliff’s edge has stunning views across what is a United Nations biosphere protected area, and connections to the Bruce Trail here offer longer hike options.

Back in downtown Toronto, bike or take the subway to Varsity Stadium and the Pan Am Fields on the University of Toronto’s main campus. After taking in the archery and field hockey, head to nearby Chinatown on Spadina Avenue and Kensington Market and enjoy two of the liveliest neighbourhoods in the city. That remains true today, as does that the hardest thing is getting one of NYC’s more than 13,000 licensed cabs, once spotted, to actually stop. Water trips in Sault Ste. Marie have their ups and downs – and their passengers wouldn’t have it any other way. Tours through the Soo Locks, available in summer, take visitors alongside the giant dockside freighters, enabling them to ride through the giant US locks and the historic Canadian lock, with the craft bobbing up 21 feet (6.4 metres) to the level of Lake Superior. Airplanes have always fascinated me, ever since I was a little boy. I used to gaze at them overhead, dreaming of one day flying such a beautiful machine. When I moved to Toronto from Chennai, India, in 2011, I had an aircraft maintenance engineering course under my belt, experience working as a mechanic on small single- and twin-engine airplanes and, later, several years of office experience working in both the Quality Control and Planning and Technical Records departments of major airlines in India. I arrived in Toronto in February and got the job at Porter in March, thrilled to be able to continue working in an industry I knew and loved.

The main function of the Planning and Technical Records department at Porter is to ensure that the aircraft component manufacturer maintenance requirements are met, as well as the requirements of the main regulatory authority, Transport Canada. Just as you would check the oil or the tire pressure of a car, so too must you perform numerous checks on each and every component of an aircraft to make sure it’s safe for flight, while continually forecasting other checks that are due.

My job is about planning, but it’s equally about archiving. The required maintenance on an aircraft is issued by Planning to Production in the form of a Work Pack, which consists of many Additional Work Cards (AWCs) that describe the tasks to be carried out. It is these records, along with any snags entered by the pilot in the Aircraft Journey Log Book and their relevant rectification by the maintenance crew, that are recorded into our RAAS software (Remote Access Aviation System). The Dirty Fingerprint copy, which is aviation terminology for the actual paperwork used by the maintenance crew, is also archived.

Bombardier, our Q400 aircraft manufacturer, recommends an interval of no more than 50 flight hours before a maintenance check be performed. It then specifies that required maintenance checks be performed at 50 FH (flight-hour) intervals until 600 FH, when a more intense check should be carried out. Check intervals are then in multiples of 50 FH and 600 FH until the heavy maintenance checks, in intervals of 6,000 FH and three years, for as long as the aircraft is in operation.

Dès mon enfance, j’ai été fasciné par les avions. J’avais toujours le nez en l’air et je rêvais de piloter un jour l’une de ces belles machines. En 2011, j’ai quitté Chennai, en Inde, pour m’installer à Toronto avec en poche un diplôme de technicien de maintenance d’avion. J’ai aussi été mécanicien sur de petits monomoteurs et bimoteurs. Après, j’ai travaillé pendant des années dans un bureau au contrôle de la qualité et à la planification et suivi technique de grande lignes aériennes indiennes. Je suis arrivé à Toronto en février et dès mars, je suis entré chez Porter, très heureux de pouvoir continuer à travailler dans une spécialité qui est la mienne.

La fonction principale du service de planifi-cation et de suivi technique chez Porter est de garantir le respect des exigences d’en-tretien du constructeur, et celles de Transport Canada, le principal organisme de réglementa-tion du secteur. De même qu’on vérifie le niveau d’huile ou la pression des pneus d’une voiture, il faut effectuer de nombreuses vérifications sur chacun des composants d’un appareil afin qu’il puisse voler en toute sécurité, et en prévision des vérifications suivantes.

Mon travail c’est la planification et c’est aussi le suivi. La décision d’entretien d’un appareil est émise en vue de planifier la production sous forme d’un programme qui est constitué de fiches de travail (AWC) décrivant les tâches à effectuer. Ce sont ces fiches, ainsi que toute observation notée par les pilotes dans le Journal de bord et les mesures prises par l’équipe de maintenance qui sont enregistrées dans le logiciel RAAS (Remote

Porter takes maintenance very seriously. In addition to manufacturers’ recommendations and the mandatory requirements of Transport Canada, Porter carries out its own maintenance checks. Any snags on an airplane are closely examined in order to determine the root cause. These measures are all preventative, with the aim of resolving issues long before they could become problematic.

Our team – which includes Manager, Super-visor and Maintenance Planners/Technical Records Administrators – is in continuous contact with other Porter departments. We liaise with Production to ensure that sufficient qualified manpower required to carry out the main-tenance checks is available and that all the work is accurately documented. We are also in regular contact with Inventory Control to ensure that all the tools and parts needed for the maintenance checks are available and at the required mainte-nance base, and with Operations (Dispatch) to ensure that the airplanes are correctly routed to the base.

I moved to Canada for a better future for myself and my family, and the camaraderie at Porter helped make the transition easier. My job made me feel at home. I actually live just outside Toronto, in Mississauga. When I’m not in Hangar 5 at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which is where our office is located, I’m at home unwinding with my family. My favourite thing about living here? Experiencing the changing of seasons. Each season is so beautiful in its own way, from golden leaves in fall to heavy drifts of snow in winter.

Some of our planes are being decked out with decals depicting events in the upcoming Toronto 2015 Pam Am/Parapan Am Games. Everyone at Porter is excited about being the official Canadian airline of the Games, and of course about the Games themselves. Which sport am I looking forward to seeing? Well, I’m Indian, so in an ideal world it would be cricket! But cricket or no cricket, I’m excited about being here in Toronto and in the midst of all the action.

Notre équipe qui inclut un directeur, un res-ponsable et des chargés de la planification de l’entretien et du suivi technique est en contact permanent avec d’autres servi-ces de Porter. Nous sommes en liaison avec la Production pour faire en sorte que le personnel qualifié nécessaire aux inspections soit disponi-ble et que tout le travail effectué soit bien noté. Nous sommes aussi en contact régulier avec le Contrôle de l’inventaire qui est responsable de la fourniture de toutes les pièces, outils et équipe-ments requis pour mener à bien les inspections et avec la base d’entretien et les Opérations (Dis-patch) qui sont chargées d’acheminer les appa-reils vers la base en question.

Je me suis installé au Canada pour assurer un meilleur avenir à ma famille et la camaraderie chez Porter a beaucoup facilité la transition. Dans mon travail, je me sens chez moi. J’habite à l’extérieur de Toronto, à Mississauga. Quand je ne suis pas au Hangar 5 de l’aéroport Billy Bishop de Toronto, où est mon bureau, je me détends à la maison avec ma famille. Ce que je préfère ici? C’est voir le changement des saisons. Chacune est belle à sa manière, des feuilles dorées en automne aux bancs de neige en hiver.

Quelques avions ont été décorés aux couleurs des prochains Jeux panaméri-cains et parapanaméricains de Toronto 2015. Chez Porter tout le monde est enchanté que nous soyons la ligne aérienne officielle des Jeux et, bien sûr nous sommes impatients qu’ils commencent. Quel sport m’intéresse? Eh bien, étant indien, j’adore le cricket! Mais cricket ou pas, je suis excité à l’idée d’être présent à Toronto, en plein cœur de l’action.
