GKNN MUDASIR YAQOOB Srinagar, Mar 13: The recent fire in Usman Shopping Complex at Solina here consuming 79 shops has rendered hundreds jobless. The vic- tims said that no official or politi- cal leader “came to us to give some solace even as a tragedy of appalling magnitude struck.” The fire broke out at the market during the night intervening March 8 and 9 when the whole valley was under a thick snow cover. “The loss caused by the devas- tating fire is not only limited to 79 owners of the shops, it has affected 79 families and hundreds of salesmen working with them,” Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, chairman Solina Bazar Trade Union, said. He said the business establish- ments completely decimated by the fire include “Sweet Leather of Ajaz Ahmad, MS Enterprises of Shahn- awaz Ahmad Bhat, Nokia Distribu- tors of Sameer Ahmad Qazi, Com- puter Institute of Khurshid Ahmad Bhat, Ajaz Enterprises of Sarfaraz Ahmad, A1 Enterprises of Bilal Ahmad Najar, Roonak Carpets of Muhammad Altaf, Irshad and Co of Mehjabeen Irshad.” He said that Wani Motors and some other establish- ments were also partially damaged by the water can- nons while the fire tenders were on job to douse the flames. He said the affected traders had put their hard earned money in the business. “Since the construction work on Jahangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover began, our business was badly affected. However, the fire has broken our backbone,” he added. He said the laborers, salesman and others who were associated directly or indirectly with the business estab- lishments here have gone under metal stress. “Here, in Kashmir, we don’t have many job opportunities. Hundreds of people were associated with us since past decades. Today, suddenly we all have become paupers,” he said. He said the business establish- ments suffered an aggregate Rs 20-25 crore loss. “There is every possibility that some criminal minded persons may have sparked this blaze as there was no electricity when the incident took place. We want prompt probe into the incident,” the shopkeepers said. “We appeal the CM to issue orders for rehabilitation of all the shopkeep- ers and other business establish- ments that suffered loss. We also urge authorities to issue building permissions to the fire victims with- out any delay so that they are in a position to rebuild their shops,” said affected shopkeepers. MUDASIR YAQOOB

Srinagar, Mar 13: The recent fire in Usman Shopping Complex at Solina here consuming 79 shops has rendered hundreds jobless. The vic-tims said that no official or politi-cal leader “came to us to give some solace even as a tragedy of appalling magnitude struck.”

The fire broke out at the market during the night intervening March 8 and 9 when the whole valley was under a thick snow cover.

“The loss caused by the devas-tating fire is not only limited to 79 owners of the shops, it has affected 79 families and hundreds of salesmen working with them,” Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, chairman Solina Bazar Trade Union, said.

He said the business establish-

ments completely decimated by the fire include “Sweet Leather of Ajaz Ahmad, MS Enterprises of Shahn-awaz Ahmad Bhat, Nokia Distribu-tors of Sameer Ahmad Qazi, Com-puter Institute of Khurshid Ahmad Bhat, Ajaz Enterprises of Sarfaraz Ahmad, A1 Enterprises of Bilal Ahmad Najar, Roonak Carpets of Muhammad Altaf, Irshad and Co of Mehjabeen Irshad.”

He said that Wani Motors and some

other establish-ments were also partially damaged by the water can-nons while the fire tenders were on job to douse the flames.

He said the affected traders had put their hard earned money in

the business. “Since the construction work on Jahangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover began, our business was badly affected. However, the fire has broken our backbone,” he added.

He said the laborers, salesman and others who were associated directly or indirectly with the business estab-lishments here have gone under metal stress.

“Here, in Kashmir, we don’t have

many job opportunities. Hundreds of people were associated with us since past decades. Today, suddenly we all have become paupers,” he said.

He said the business establish-ments suffered an aggregate Rs 20-25 crore loss. “There is every possibility that some criminal minded persons may have sparked this blaze as there was no electricity when the incident took place. We want prompt probe into the incident,” the shopkeepers said.

“We appeal the CM to issue orders for rehabilitation of all the shopkeep-ers and other business establish-ments that suffered loss. We also urge authorities to issue building permissions to the fire victims with-out any delay so that they are in a position to rebuild their shops,” said affected shopkeepers.

ALI IMRAN

Srinagar, Mar 13: In summer of 2014 when Ghulam Muhammad (name changed) an artisan from Zadibal local-ity was granted loan as part of a special scheme, he hoped to boost his small-time paper machie unit. But Septem-ber 2014 floods shattered his dreams when his house was devastated in the floods.

Muhammad is not indebt-ed alone. Hundreds others like him granted loan as part of the government schemed for upliftment of artisans are finding it hard to repay the installments. The poor artisans whose dwellings and craft units were devas-

tated in the floods are strug-gling for survival.

“At a time when I am find-ing it hard to earn two square meals a day for my family the bank authorities are threaten-ing me to pay installments or face music. How can I repay installment in this hour of crisis,” asked an artisan from Safa Kadal locality.

The craftsmen said it would be impossible for them to repay the loan for around five to ten years.

Meanwhile, the crafts-men have appealed Finance Minister Dr Haseeb Drabu to have a compensate look into their cases so that the loan amounts outstanding against them are waived.
