What is Flow Thinking?

Flow Thinking – Improving performance with Grundfos know-how and experience

Pumps are an important part of the infrastructure of modern

society, crucial in handling the many complex flows used in

heating, air conditioning, pressure boosting and wastewater

systems.

The pump is just a small part of the entire water flow system.

But it is a vital part that gives life to the system and ensures

the flow. At Grundfos we strive to make pumps that deliver

the required flow in the most efficient way possible.

We don’t build the entire system – you do. Our aim is to be

your preferred pump brand. We want to make it as easy as

possible for you to select the right pump for your specific

purpose.

Flow Thinking means taking a holistic approach – always

trying to optimise the performance of the entire system,

rather than any single component. This is the essence of all

our efforts to be the preferred pump supplier to the commer-

cial building services market.

What this means to you – and the opportunities this gives you

as a commercial building services partner – is the subject of

this brochure.

Shared know-how generates maximum value

Grundfos has a fundamental commitment to helping our

customers and working partners do their jobs better, more

effectively and more profitably by sharing our know-how and

passing on the benefits of our vast experience.

The tools for the job

All the tools listed here can be seen on the www.grundfos.com/cbs

website, along with a wide range of other information about

Grundfos Flow Thinking.

The Grundfos System Guide is a comprehensive refer-

ence tool that sets out in detail the standard systems used

in heating, air conditioning, pressure boosting and waste

water. The focus is on the benefits of speed-controlled pumps

for reduced energy consumption and lower Life Cycle Costs.

System requirements are presented, and the pump selec-

tions appropriate to particular configurations are clearly

described. Available both as hard copy and in electronic form

at www.grundfos.com/cbs

Grundfos WinCAPS is one of the most extensive and com-

plete electronic tools for the dimensioning and selection of

pumps in the business. The program is available on CD-ROM

and can be used as a electronic product catalogue or as a

sizing tool for the pump systems. WinCAPS provides access to

almost all technical product information and qoutation texts

needed for any project. Furthermore WinCAPS is capable of

keeping hold on all information on pumping systems for an

entire project. This projectinformation can be stored in an

electronic form and stored – reworked or reused – which even

makes it accesable for your client’s. WinCAPS is also capable

of calculating the Life Cycle Costs of your particular pump

system.

Grundfos WebCAPS The thousands of examples of prod-

uct documentation and CAD drawings found in WebGOLD

have recently been integrated into WebCAPS. Furthermore,

users can now select products by using Capacity Overview

curves.

The new Literature tab gives you access to the literature in

WebCAPS, where you can browse for literature on a general

level, or conduct a search based on product numbers.

What’s more, selecting products by using Capacity Overview

curves makes pump selection easier than ever. Simply find

the relevant curves for your application, and click on the QH

point you require within the blue area on the curves. The

pump that matches your point is presented you automati-

cally following a simple refresh of WebCAPS. Alternatively,

you can enter your data manually, for improved precision. at

In a highly competitive market, it is only natural that interest

centres on price issues. However, experience shows that the

purchase price of a pump amounts to as little as 5–10% of the

total cost, on average. Maintenance and service account for

2–5%, while as much as 90% of the overall cost of a pump

stems from the energy it uses when in operation.

The essence of Flow Thinking is to ensure that customers

get the greatest possible benefits from their pumps. To make

sure of getting maximum value from any pump system, it is

crucial to go beyond focusing solely on the initial purchase

price and to analyse the full Life Cycle Cost of each particular

system configuration.

Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis

The Life Cycle Cost analysis is a method of calculating the

overall costs of a pump system. LCC is a neutral benchmark

reference that includes the initial investment, installation

costs, maintenance costs and the costs of the energy used

while in operation.*

Huge reductions in electricity consumption

Almost 20% of the world’s electricity consumption relates to

pump systems.

30–50% of this energy could be saved by converting to elec-

tronic speed-controlled pump systems. These automatically

adjust their operation to match the prevailing conditions –

and thus ensure that energy is always used with maximum

efficiency.

The benefits of LCC analysis are thus twofold:

• financial – a tool to decide which combination of pumps

and total pump systems provides the best value for money

• environmental – minimised energy consumption.

Payback time of less than two years

Grundfos electronic speed control systems minimise energy

consumption. Because energy costs exert a huge influence on

the Life Cycle Costs of a pump, there is usually a payback time

of as little as 1–2 years on the extra cost of a speed-controlled

pump system. Such solutions can often provide energy sav-

ings of as much as 30-50%.

Further information about Life Cycle Cost and the benefits

of Grundfos speed-controlled pumps is available at

www.grundfos.com/cbs

Reduce your real costs

* Supported by recognised bodies

The method of calculating LCC is the result of the joint efforts of the Hydraulic

Institute (HI – the largest association of pump producers and leading suppliers in

North America), Europump (on behalf of 15 national manufacturing associations

in Europe, representing more than 400 pump manufacturers) and the Office of

Industrial Technologies (OIT) at the US Department of Energy (UDE).

The Grundfos range of electronic speed-controlled

pumps provides many advantages:

• significantly reduced energy consumption

• minimised system noise

• technical opportunities to optimise the system

performance

• opportunities for monitoring and remote control

• better operating conditions for other system

components

20 years operation

Almost 20% of the world’s electricity

consumption relates to pump

systems. 30–50% of this

energy could be saved.

Assumptions behind the calculation

System 1 features 2 constant speed pumps

(2 end suction 80-250/259 pumps).

System 2 features 3 electronic speed-controlled

pumps (3 Grundfos TPE In-Line pumps).

Benefit

Depending on the energy price, there is a

very short payback time on the extra cost for

the electronic speed-controlled pump. Given a

cost of EUR 0.1 per KWh, the payback time is

approx. 1.7 years.

“… within the field of variable-speed pumps and fre-

quency converters, Grundfos is certainly one of the most

important manufacturers, and had brought many

products to the market ahead of the competition.”

Eike Wulkau, Technical Manager EAN Energieanlagen Nord GmbH, working on the construction of the new German Parliament, Berlin.

“… we decided to use the Grundfos variable-speed

pumps … which – although involving a higher initial

investment – are a more economically viable solution

seen over the full life cycle of these products.”

Markus Zieher, engineerZieher Technik Ingenieurbüro, working for Weishaupt, Ulm.

“Grundfos is a brand-name product, just like Daimler-

Chrysler, and I think the two go well together. I always tell

my customers that Grundfos pumps are like a Mercedes

– they are the Mercedes of circulating pumps.”

Stefan Mast, Heating and Renovations SupervisorHeizbross – installation company working for Daimler-Chrysler Bank, Stuttgart.

”Not seeing our partners as just suppliers of individual

components, we require support from each of them,

including advice that is flexible and based on state-

of-the-art technology … We can very definitely recom-

mend the Grundfos product.”

Rudenz Purr, Property ManagerTishman Speyer, Sony Center, Berlin.

Reliability is one of the hallmarks of Grundfos pump technol-

ogy, and is built into every aspect of our pump designs. Our

entire company – and everything we do – is rooted in the

engineering mindset, with a profound respect for quality in

construction and reliability in use.

As part of a process of constant improvement, Grundfos oper-

ates with special FAS (failure analysis system) procedures

that collate the results of more than fifty-five years of pump

manufacture.

In addition, Grundfos manufacturing plants have all been

granted ISO 9001 or ISO 9002 certification, and Grundfos is

world-renowned for its quality assurance procedures.

Attention to detail is therefore a natural part of our way of

thinking, and it pays off because installation and mainten-

ance costs are important components in the Life Cycle Cost

of any pump.

An important lesson of Flow Thinking is that the only way to

achieve maximum efficiency is by focusing on all the details

– so that is exactly what we do.

Grundfos has an annual R&D budget of approx. €50 million

and employs a specialist staff of 450 solely on R&D and prod-

uct development. The results are clearly visible in a steady

stream of innovative products and details that constantly

improve the efficiency and reliability of any system that

requires pumps.

Technical products plus

experience and know-how equals...

In many systems in CBS there is a huge potential for optimiz-

ing the system in terms of comfort, reliability and Life Cycle

Cost. This potential can be exploited by adapting the concept

of speed controlled pumps to the particular system. Among

other tings, this adaption requires the pump to interact with

a frequncy converter and controller.

To obtain the optimal interaction between these compo-

nents some knowledge about the hydraulic conditions in the

system is required. Grundfos posseses this knowledge and

can help you exploit the potential.

Furthermore the speed controlling concept supports the

growing need for integration with BMS systems.

Grundfos – the inventer

In terms of installation and comissioning it is an advantage

to have the system component’s integrated from Grundfos.

As the inventer of the integrated solution, Grundfos proudly

recommends this up to 22 kW shaft power.

Though, Grundfos also provides any discrete solution. This can

be recommended if:

• System requires pumps bigger than 22 kW

• The client prefers a discrete solution – also for smaller

pumps.

• There is a special wish/need for interaction with other

system equipment/accessories.

Pumping systems

In many cases it is an advantage to have more pumps running

as a system. I this case Grundfos is cabable of supplying the

Using electronic speed-controlled pumps opens up important new opportunities for advanced control systems and building manage-ment facilities.

Full-line in building services

Grundfos speed-controlled pumps are equally suitable for

heating, air-conditioning and pressure-boosting systems. All

these types of systems can benefit from using a speed-con-

trolled pump solution, which adjusts automatically.

Heating which offers significant energy savings

In the area of heating, the ultimate benefit of Grundfos speed-

controlled pumps is the ability to achieve huge energy savings

without compromising the pumps lifespan or reliability.

Air-conditioning and custom-built pump solutions for opti-

mising the system

Never mind how complex an air-conditioning system is, or

how dramatic the variations in flow are during any 24-hour

period, we will have the correct pump solution to optimise

the entire system.

Pressure boosting and reliability of supply

Through continuously controlling the speed, and thereby

adjusting the flow, the use of Grundfos speed-controlled

pumps for boosting, reduces energy consumption, while

ensuring the supply is regulated throughout the day.

BMS integration

By using bus communication, Grundfos speed-controlled

pumps are able to exchange data with virtually all kinds of

building management systems. This makes it easy to opti-

mise every aspect of operations, and to coordinate a wide

range of control systems.
