When the Lansing Regional Chamber o Commerce initiated the Celebration

o Regional Growth (CORG) Awards in 2006, it was intended as an

economic celebration and showcase or organizations that have made

signicant investments in the Greater Lansing region. That rst luncheon

recognized eight organizations that had launched major expansion projects

or made other signicant contributions to the regional economy.

What is most rewarding to me is that our region continues to experience

considerable investment by a diverse cross section o organizations that

have experienced steady growth, even during challenging economic

times. In act, over the past seven years, CORG has honored 41

organizations that have combined to invest more than $1.5 billion in our

    regional economy!

The 2012 CORG honorees are not only deserving, but they refect a rich

diversity o market sectors contributing to the 21st century economy o

the Greater Lansing region. They represent large and small businesses, energy and inrastructure, technology, research and development, arts

    and culture and high-tech manuacturing.

The lansn Boa o wat an lts state-o-the-art cogeneration

plant in REO Town not only represents a major investment rom a dollars

and cents standpoint, it also underscores our regions leadership role in

the transition to a more ecient and cleaner delivery o energy, which is

vital or both our economy and the environment.

The e & et Boa At ms is destined to be a transormational, internationally recognized arts and learning center that will attract new

visitors and acclaim or MSU and our region.

German-owned B Aa copoaton in Williamston is the third

organization to be recognized with CORGs International Trade award.

Bekum continues to expand their international markets or its blow

molding machinery, and was the rst organization to receive a grant rom

the State Export and Trade Promotion (STEP) program, which allowed

Bekum to begin establishing new relationships overseas.

capta St an w, in. is one o those under the radar successstories that needs to be told. As a leading supplier o steel bar, steel wire

and steel rod, the company has expanded into a larger headquarters in

Dewitt and put millions into various upgrades.

Ntanta matn is symbolic o our regions growth in technology

and the knowledge-based economy as the rst recipient o our new

Emerging Economy Award. The East Lansing-based search engine

marketing rm has opened a second oce in Grand Rapids and serves a

    wide variety o major clients.

The Lansing Regional Chamber o Commerce is proud o the investments

being made by all 1,200 o our hard working member organizations.

The Celebration o Regional Growth Awards annually gives us an

opportunity to say thank you to a number o companies that are helping

    to make our region great.

lANSiNg BOArd OF wATer ANd lighT (Bwl)The Lansing Board o Water and Lights $182million REO Town Cogeneration Plant andHeadquarters project has been hailed as agame-changer by regional economic experts.

Its a job-creating catalyst in that it isproviding employment or 1,000 constructionworkers and will eventually house 180 BWLemployees, said BWL CEO J. Peter Lark.

Weve also gone into REO Town and repairedthe Grand Trunk Western Railroad Depot and

The cogeneration plant will also be an environmental game-changer. The acilitywill be BWLs rst natural gas-red steam and electric generation acility. Switchingto natural gas will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent when thecurrent steam plant is decommissioned.

By using natural gas, BWL will avoid burning 139,000 tons o coal each year, said Lark. Across our electric ootprint we will reduce our carbon output by 20percent. Thats huge, and something which people in the Lansing region shouldbe proud.

Netvantage has expandedto a sta o 11, moved to a new headquarters in downtown East Lansing, andrecently opened a second oce in Grand Rapids. The company counts many

Thats a date employers and employees need to have highlighted on their calendar, becausethats when the employer mandate takes aect as part o the Patient Protection and AordableCare Act adopted one year ago. An expert panel speaking at the Lansing Regional Chambers

2012 Healthcare Forum told the audience that employers need to consult with their insuranceagents, attorney, CPA and/or nancial advisors to gain a clear understanding o what optionsare available or what most call a complex and sometimes conusing law. Panelists alsoagreed that healthcare costs will certainly increase.

Healthcare reorm is not pushing rates down, said Timothy Durso, president o The CentennialGroup. We also expect higher co-pays and deductibles.

We dont know what the percentages will be because they will fuctuate depending on whatemployers need to do to come into compliance (with the new law), said Alisa Bennett, manager, group business health care reorm team at Blue Cross Blue Shield o Michigan. Some people might see rates go down.

Hospitals also ace cost challenges connected with healthcare reorm. Rick Wright, president& CEO o McLaren-Greater Lansing, predicted that even though costs will be going up,reimbursements to hospitals and doctors will not.

I would challenge anyone who suggests that the government will put more money intohealthcare, said Wright.

Smaller employers will ace their own set o challenges as they will have to weigh the costo providing healthcare insurance versus the possible loss o talent to other companies ithey require employees to instead enter the state health exchanges. Panelists again urgedemployers to study up on the new law and work with their expert advisors to sort through theiroptions.
