Commander’s ColumnWow! A year goes by fast! As I begin my second year as Commander,
I look at where we were and where we are now. More importantly, I see where we can be with all the resources we have.
My team and I will be officially installed on Saturday, August 27. Please join us as we assume and take accountability for our responsibilities for the next year. See the notice in the newsletter for details.
This last year we had several entertainment nights, some better than others, to keep everyone active. We’ll look to see what we can do to improve these events and attendance. Your thoughts on how to make this happen are always welcome. Better yet, how about organizing one?
Our annual Family Labor Day Picnic will soon be here. This is one of the largest attended events we have, so be sure to come to enjoy the food and comradeship. Our staff of volunteers will be preparing the main entrees and corn on the cob, so please bring a side dish to share. This is really a bargain event at $5 per plate (children 10 and under are free). As an added incentive, we’ll have a 50/50 raffle, a raffle for a classic American Legion bottle (donated by Herb Morrison) and a raffle for a 27”x40” framed photo of the firemen raising the American Flag at Ground Zero 9/11/2001 (donated by Hal Burke).
We were well represented at the state convention by Jeff Adams, John Cruz, Rich Eldorado and Doug Goding. The state convention marks the start of a new membership year, and many of you have received notices from the state to renew your membership. Please renew early to avoid getting additional notices from the state. See the renewal notice in this newsletter.
Be sure to mark your calendars for September 10th for the Veterans Expo from 8:30am to 12:30pm, sponsored by Senator Christine Radogno and Representatives Jim Durkin & Ron Sandack. Like last year, it’ll be set up in the format of a vendor fair. If you were here last November 7th, this year there are more vendors expected. Spread the word to fellow veterans so they can learn what benefits they may be entitled to and how to obtain them. I’ll include a reminder in next month’s column.

In light of the recent violence, I’ve noted a few relevant quotes:
“We must reject the idea that every time a law’s broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.” – Ronald Reagan
“After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn’t do it.” – William S. Burroughs
“An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it.” – Jeff Cooper U.S. Military
“Life’s tough; it’s even tougher when you’re stupid!!!” – John Wayne
May you always walk in sunshine.

Auxiliary News – August 2016“Serving and Protecting
those who serve and protect”
Joey Klingbiel and I attended the Department Convention in Springfield in July along with several
hundred other Auxiliary members from around the state. It was good to touch base again with friends and find out what is going on at their units.
Our new Department President for the year is Luella Buske. Her theme is “Serving and Protecting those who serve and protect.” More information regarding her project for the year and her goals will be coming out soon.
The major theme that ran through the entire convention was Membership and the need to recruit new members. Also stressed was the need to retain those new members. Everyone agreed that we all need to be nicer to each other and more inclusive at our meetings and events. If the current trend of decreasing membership continues, the American Legion Auxiliary will cease to exist in 30 years. There were a total of 2750 Legion Family deaths over the last year and 8 Illinois Auxiliary units have closed over the last year. The positive news is that the membership decline has slowed so let’s hope for a turnaround. There is a strategic plan in place which you all will be hearing more about over the next year. Be proud of being an Auxiliary member and invite your friends to join if they are eligible.
2017 dues can be paid at any time now. Joey Klingbiel is the Membership Chairman. You can send your $24.00 to her attention at 7502 Brookbank Rd. Willowbrook 60527-2313 or give it to her in person. You can also go on line to the Auxiliary Website which is www.alaforveterans.org and renew on line. You will need to register as a member if this is your first time accessing the website. If you don’t know your membership number, give Joey a call and she can give it to you. Please don’t forget to also renew any Juniors that you sponsor.

The Poppy Program raises community awareness and respect for our veterans by educating the public about the symbol of the poppy, taken from a line in the poem “In Flanders Fields” written on the battlefront during World War I by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D.
In honor of the men and woman that have served and sacrificed their lives for our freedom, we will display an “HONOR BOARD” in a prominent place in our legion to give thanks to them. Our goal for 2016 is to raise $3,000 for veterans and their families.
All funds go directly to the Veterans and their families. During the month of May the displayed board will honor your loved ones who served. Make checks Payable to: American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 80 Please send your information to:Attn: Pam Quetnau • 519 S. Park St. • Westmont, IL • 60559

HONESTY
What is honesty? We can certainly look at Webster’s definition, but that doesn’t mean anything if we individually don’t accept it.
What do you do if you observe someone being dishonest, as defined by your own beliefs? You have several options:
• Turn your head the other way, providing an excuse in your own mind that this doesn’t affect me directly so I’m not going to get involved.
• Justify what you observed by believing the organization can handle the cost.
• Confront individuals you know have observed these actions and have decided to remain silent.
• Confront the individual regarding their actions. When it comes to our own organization and see an act of dishonesty,
ask yourself what action should you take? Keep in mind the effect of the financial loss.
• What disabled/disadvantaged veteran could we have provided better support?
• Which youth could we have provided financial assistance?• Which active duty Armed Forces members could we have provided
better support?ONLY YOU can answer these questions.Ed Ludwig - Commander
