Craft Lager is experiencing significant growth these days, and Adrian

Tierney-Jones has a nice Sunday-Supplement style piece in Pellicle celebrating the rich diversity of styles contained within the category.

    https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2020/11/9/atj-on-lager

Anybody with a garden who claims they haven't given at least

passing consideration this year to building their own bar/pub is

    not being entirely truthful!

It turns out that (at least in the USA) there is a whole cottage

industry springing up that has you covered.

    https://vinepair.com/articles/prebuilt-bars-instagram-covid-19/

The Pubcurmudgeon has a nice article, which sets out to review

the BBC2 Series "Saving the British Pub", but ends up making the

point that, even pre-COVID, many of them were not saveable because ..."People still like the idea of pubs in theory, but in

practice they visit them less and less."

    https://pubcurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2020/11/a-recipe-to-

    save-pub.html

Here at TWICB, it is not the pubs that we miss, but the taprooms. Given a choice between pub or

taproom, it is very hard to imagine the circumstances that we would ever choose to visit a pub again.

Finally, this week in Cloudwater will see Paul and Co. hosting an event

featuring two California Breweries with a focus on inclusivity and social justice.

Here at TWICB, we are not claiming to be the UK's largest lobby group, or even the UK's largest beer

Petition Lambeth Council to permit London Beer Factory to open a new Taproom at

London Beer Factory are aiming to create a relaxed, family-friendly brewery taproom within their newly leased warehouse unit on Beadman St, West Norwood. However, their application for license has been

The Treasury has announced changes to Small Brewers Relief (SBR) – the progressive tax system that has revolutionised UK brewing. These changes will reduce the 50% duty threshold from 5,000hl to

  • WHO OWNS WHO…?

This Week in Craft Beer is dedicated to supporting and promoting Independent UK Craft Breweries and

    the ecosystem surrounding them.

We define Independent as being those breweries who are not wholly or partly owned by a macro

brewery. A macro brewery is generally defined as a large, national or international brewery that produces and distributes more than 6 million barrels of beer per year.

Getting a new brewery off the ground is an expensive business, so most have external shareholders in

some shape or form, whether through friends and family, crowdfunding, or some other form of

investment. In our opinion, this does not compromise their independence, as long as the shareholder is

    not a macro brewery.

    Why does this matter?

Having a Macro as a parent company (even a minority shareholder), gives the brewery huge advantages of patronage, including access to cheaper or scarce ingredients, access to distribution networks, access

to points of sale including draft taps and pub fridges etc. For example, in 2017 ABInbev bought the

entire South African hop market for its own use and denied access to all independent breweries.
