The ef fec t of par t ic le s ize , shape, and surface on the behavior of a powder is continually being studied. In quali ty control of a powder, seldom i s a given parameter known well enough t o predict accurately overall behavior of a powder" Therefore, many par t ic le parameters must be evaluated t o determine the influ- encing factors , including width , lengthlwidth ra t io , volume, surface area, reentrant surface, bulk density, compressibility, surface roughness, pore volume, degree of sphericity, etc, , and the i r re1 ation t o extrudabi 1 i ty , pressabi l i ty , firing performance, e tc . Determining these t h i n g s i s called powder or par t ic le characterization,

to study various relationships; e.g.

Basically a permeability apparatus consists of a chamber containing the powder
to be measured, a pump or other device with which a fluid is made to flow through
the powder, and gages to indicate the rate of flow and the accompanying pressure
drop across the chamber.
