Have your say about hospitalBy CLAYTON BENNETT
PALMERSTON and rural residents areencouraged to raise their voices aboutthe design and planning of the newPalmerston hospital.
In a joint venture the Federal and NTgovernments have committed tobuilding a $110 million hospitalin the area.
Health Minister Kon Vatskalisannounced last week the public wouldbe asked for input.
‘‘It is important that the communityhas the option of providing input intowhat will be the biggest health projectundertaken in the Territory in a very longtime,’’ Vatskalis said.
‘‘It is ... essential to get it right.’’Under the plan the Federal
government will provide $70 million andthe NT Government will provide $40million towards the purpose-builthospital. The facility will include a24-hour emergency care clinic as well ascapacity for up to 60 beds.
A survey to gauge opinion on wherethe hospital should be located and howit should be designed will be available atvarious locations including thePalmerston library and shopping centre.
It will also be able to be completedonline and at the Palmerston CityCouncil office.
Palmerston residents will also receivethe survey distributed to theirletterboxes.

PUPILS at Sacred HeartPrimary in Palmerston had alesson literally out of theblue from a visiting Navyhelicopter crew.
Pilots landed an Agusta109E chopper on theschool playing field onTuesday morning as part ofa program to giveyoungsters a close-up lookat some of the Navy’sequipment.
The helicopter, from 723Squadron based at HMASAlbatross in New SouthWales, is currently deployedin Darwin to support a seaexercise.
The children quizzedNavy personnel on thecopter’s size, speed, manoeuvering andweapons before climbingon board for pictures.
They were given Navy
caps and souvenir bookletsabout the Navy centenaryin 2011. ‘‘It was cool to getinside the helicopter, and it
was more comfortableinside than I expected,’’Tristan Chambers, 11, said.
The chopper will also visit
Good Shepherd LutheranCollege in Howard Springsthis morning. The Agusta109E is used by the Navy to
build aircrew experiencebefore they transition tomore complex operationalhelicopters.
Emergency upgrade for RDHA WINNELLIE-based construction company has won the tender for the$2.8 million Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) emergency department upgrade.
P.W. Baxter and Associates has a history of specialising in major publicworks. The upgrade is part of the Federal government’s national health reformand aims to ease pressure on busy emergency departments such as the one atRDH. An expanded fast-track area, two new paediatric beds and three newclinical initiatives nursing beds as well as a new look reception and triage deskare among the new features for the hospital.
Top End seniorstake their issuesto the topSENIOR Territorians came out in support of aged care
reform during a visit by a federal minister this week.
Retirees filled a lecture theatre at the Museum of the
NT to take part in one of a series of consultation
sessions being held around the country by Federal
Mental Health and Ageing Minister Mark Butler.
Mr Butler is collecting feedback from aged care users
to inform the Federal Government’s response to a
significant national report published last month calling
for a complete overhaul of the system.
He said some local concerns were similar to those in
other regions, such as the need for support for people to
live at home as long as possible.
But there were specific calls from Top End seniors for
reform of the provision, location and staffing of aged
care services, he said.
One of the strongest issues raised was about the need
for increased home maintenance support for seniors
who were still living independently but needed help
looking after their properties.
‘‘This was a really important opportunity to hear the
thoughts of service users in the Top End and they
delivered clear messages,’’ Mr Butler said.
