Pilots landed an Agusta 109E chopper on the school playing field on Tuesday morning as part of a program to give youngsters a close-up look at some of the Navy’s equipment. The helicopter, from 723 Squadron based at HMAS Albatross in New South Wales, is currently deployed in Darwin to support a sea exercise. The children quizzed Navy personnel on the copter’s size, speed, manoeuvering and weapons before climbing on board for pictures. They were given Navy caps and souvenir booklets about the Navy centenary in 2011. ‘‘It was cool to get inside the helicopter, and it was more comfortable inside than I expected,’’ Tristan Chambers, 11, said. The chopper will also visit Good Shepherd Lutheran College in Howard Springs this morning. The Agusta 109E is used by the Navy to build aircrew experience before they transition to more complex operational helicopters.
