4-H Community Service Pleasant Clovers 4-H Club. It was brought to the Pleasant Clovers’ attention La Porte County Foster Care Children are in need of backpacks and personal items. When sent to a new foster home, each child has their items shoved into plastic garbage bags and over time results in lost care items and personal items. 4-H Leaders and members set a goal to collect and donate new backpacks filled with personal care items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, hairbrush, diaper and wipes, a blanket, book or stuffed animal. By donated filled backpacks a foster child will be able to carry their own things when moving during a difficult time. Pleasant Clovers filled 18 backpacks. Leaders and members would like to thank the community for helping them with their successful donation drive.

Youth-Adult Partnerships The what, why, and how of bettering programs, communities, and people through cross-generational collaboration.

Youth-Adult Partnerships are:

● Youth and adults working together in a positive, mutually respectful environment with the recognition that each group contributes unique strengths to the relationship.

● A process that takes place over time, with small successes leading to big changes. ● Collaboration- it’s hard, but worth the intentional effort to come together.

Youth-adult partnerships take intention and time to build because they push the boundaries of how the two                                 groups traditionally interact… so how do we get there?

● Adults: must be willing to share their power and responsibility. ● Youth: must be willing to gain power and take on responsibility. ● Both: forget the assumptions they have about youth and adults as individual populations, and start treating

each other the way they would treat their peers.

Youth-Adult Partnerships (cont.)

If these relationships are challenging, why make the effort to partner with youth? What are the benefits of

youth-adult partnerships?

What are some foundational values to start building our youth-adult partnerships? ● Recognize that everyone has a unique perspective to share. That all voices at the table have value, and

that each individual should be listened to equally. ● All parties need to publicly acknowledge that they respect each other. ● Understand the difference between doing something with youth, and doing something for youth.

Moving forward with building youth-adult partnerships in your community? First off, way to go! This process requires buy-in from all parties involved. Once you have that, here are some best practices to help you stay on track:

● Equal voice, participation, responsibility ● Establish a common goal and an inclusive environment. ● Build open communication and deliberate training/support. ● Treat each other as individuals, not representatives of an entire population. ● Acknowledge the process and ask for help when you don’t know where to go next. ● Respectfully discover, question, and disagree. Because of the power dynamic of traditional youth-adult

relationships, these take time and effort to establish. ● Ensure that both parties feel mutually responsible for the success (or failure) of a project or effort.

Are you wondering how to establish and maintain these values and best practices? Here are some tools to help:

● Set guiding principles as a collective group at the beginning of your partnership ● Seat youth at the front of the room, away from parents ● Intentionally create time for icebreakers and team-building activities ● Give everyone meaningful roles, and distribute workload evenly ● Use name tags or table tents to learn and use everyone’s names

Youth will stay with host families of participating MN 4-Hers, discover sites and attractions, and meet new friends. In July 2020, Junior Leaders will host the Murray County, MN 4-H members and show them Northwest IN. This is a great opportunity to develop communication, leadership, citizenship, independence, empathy and cultural awareness skills.

This is a 2 year commitment as participants must be able to host in 2020. LaPorte County will be the 2nd county to participate in this program in Indiana! Feel free to e-mail MJ for more information at [email protected].   We will have another informational meeting in December. For those interested, a $100 non-refundable deposit is due January 31st.
