THE LARGEST 4-H EVENT IN CANADAMAY 29-31, 2015 l STAMPEDE PARK, CALGARY, AB

2015 4-H ON PARADE PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

On behalf of the Calgary Stampede, I’d like to welcome

you to 4-H on Parade presented by Cervus Equipment.

I’m pleased to provide greetings, as the 4-H on Parade

event holds a special place at the Stampede. The

Stampede is rooted in agriculture and, because of this,

shares many of the same values as the 4-H program.

It’s vital that future generations continue to understand

the importance agriculture holds for our communities,

our country and the world. 4-H on Parade is one of

theCalgary Stampede’s great events that brings together

rural and urban communities in a welcoming space to

All of our young participants can be proud of the hard work and dedication it took to get

here today; I applaud you for your efforts. Congratulations to all participants for what you

have accomplished, and will accomplish, throughout the weekend.

And a special thanks to our 4-H on Parade volunteer committee as well as to the other 4-H

program volunteers for all their hard efforts towards putting on this event each year; you

are stewards of youth development and agriculture education, and the Stampede thanks

you.

Good luck to everyone participating this weekend and I hope to see you all at the 2015

Calgary Stampede from

July 3-12.

Bill Gray

President and Chairman of the Board

Calgary Stampede

WELCOME TO 4-H ON PARADE!

4-H on Parade started back in the late 70’s and has continued to grow into the largest 4-H

event in Western Canada. In 1976 the projects that were exhibited were carcass calves,

steers, dairy, beef heifers, cows with calves on foot, horses and sheep. There was only one

sheep club that participated in 4-H on Parade at the beginning. The next year the horse

clubs doubled and the members of the horse clubs almost quadrupled! The Parade of clubs

happened at noon on the Saturday and this was always a highlight for the members. The

parade was led by flag bearers, Stampede Queen dignitaries and followed by the clubs. The

next year the cutest animal contest was introduced.

It wasn’t until 1979 that the life skills projects were added to 4-H on Parade. In the first year

of life skills being added to the event there was a 4-H Fashion Show that allowed member to

show off their sewing pieces. In this same year there was a 4-H milking competition as well.

1980 was a big year for 4-H on Parade as the infamous “Great Bed Race” held its grand

debut on Saturday night. In the description of this event it read, “five events for

participants ranging from under 14 years to leaders and adults to members of the media.

A team consists of a “regulation bed” and 5 team members. This event is new to 4-H on

Parade, but promises to be very well attended.”

The next year competitions continued and a tug-a-war was added to the Friday night

schedule. More life skills projects like foods were introduced this year and Equitation

clinics were offered for the members. 4-H on Parade has always been held on Stampede

Park and initially was held during the 10 days of Stampede in July. In the last decade 4-H

on Parade moved to be the last weekend of May/ beginning of June weekend. Over the years

4-H on Parade has grown and diversified the activities and projects that are showcased over

the weekend on Stampede Park.

4-H on Parade is a very exciting time of the year for most of the 4-Hers in and around the

Calgary region. 4-H on Parade brings everyone together for the largest 4-H event in all

of Western Canada. 4-H members have the opportunity to showcase their achievements,

build relationships with other members and learn about the various 4-H projects on

display over the weekend. 4-H on Parade showcases horse, steer and heifer shows,

demonstrations of small engines, photography and other life skills projects, sheep

trimming, showmanship, agility dog trials, and a Tug-a-War competition. The event

concludes with the sheep and steer sales on Sunday.

Enjoy the show!

2015 4-H ON PARADE DIRECTOR’S WELCOME

NOTE FROM THE 4-H PARADE COMMITTEE

Greetings and welcome to the Calgary Stampede 4-H on Parade presented by Cervus Equipment.

I want to thank you for your participation in this great event. We are so proud of all the 4-H participants, the 4-H Clubs and our 4-H on Parade committee volunteers.

This event continues to thrive and demonstrate the importance of agriculture to Alberta, both rural and urban. This is the largest gathering of 4-H youth in Canada and we should be especially proud of what we are accomplishing together.

Here at the Stampede, we are fully supportive of youth education and activities on a year-round basis. We are thrilled to be working closely with 4-H to help build strong, vibrant and enriched opportunities for all youth to be engaged in learning through doing.

Your program speaks to all of us in very special ways, as it takes us back to our own youth. So whether we were in a 4-H club or volunteering at the event, each one of us are making a contribution to our communities through our involvement in programs like 4-H.

Good luck to everyone participating this weekend, and know that the Stampede is thrilled to help provide Alberta’s youth with a uniqe channel for showcasing how agriculture and 4-H impacts everyone’s lives.

Roc Spence Director Liaison Calgary Stampede

On behalf of the Calgary Stampede 4-H on Parade committee, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to 4-H on Parade. Once again we are proud to welcome hundreds of youth from across the Calgary Region to Canada’s largest gathering of 4-H clubs and members in the west.

Every year, 4-H on Parade provides 4-H members with a venue to showcase their great diversity of projects in the 4-H program. Alongside our traditional livestock programs consisting of horses, cattle and sheep, we are fortunate to have such varied programs as agility dogs, photography, welding and many more. It is this variety of programming that gives 4-H on Parade a character that is unique among 4-H programs and excites 4-H members to return year after year.

Whether this is your first time at 4-H on Parade, or you have been attending for years, I would like to invite each of you to experience as much of this diversity as possible. Regardless of what programs you choose to attend, you will see the best examples of young people “learning to do by doing.” Welcome to 4-H on Parade.

HORSES

One of the larger shows at 4-H on Parade is

the horse show. The horse show is three days

long and has a variety of different classes that

the members can partake in. Two of the most

popular events that are featured in the horse

show are the jeopardy trail and the horse bowl.

The horses are exercised and warmed-up before

all classes so you will see many horses around

over the weekend. 4-Hers are not scared to tell

you about their project so go ahead and learn

more about horses!

LIFE SKILLS

One of the fastest growing projects is the life skills. The life skills area will be showcased in the Agrium Western Event Centre. Life skills includes projects like archery, clothing and textiles, foods, photography, small engines, scrapbooking, visual arts and welding. There is a silent auction that members can enter if they choose. Be sure to check out the projects; and you may even go home with a new art piece.

The 2015 Life Skills Charity Auction piece has been graciously donated (and handcrafted) by the members of Bow Valley Beef & Multi 4-H Club.

Bow Valley Beef & Multi has chosen the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation (CanLyme) as their charity of choice for the auction proceeds.

CanLyme was chosen as their charity of choice since they have two families in the club who have been impacted by Lyme disease this past year. Lyme disease is on the rise in Canada, yet diagnostics, treatment, physician and public awareness are largely inadequate. The Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation (CanLyme) is dedicated to raising awareness and promoting Lyme disease research, education and treatment.

This piece will be auctioned off over the weekend in the Life Skills area.

SHEEP

Since the beginning of 4-H on Parade, the

sheep numbers have only gone up! The Sheep

projects take part in the conformation classes,

showmanship and trimming. Many sheep

projects are shown without a halter so it is

interesting to watch youth handling their sheep.

The market lambs will be sold on Sunday at the

sale starting at 10:45 a.m. Be sure to check out the

sheep and their neat, cozy hair wraps!

The 2015 charity sheep project is donated by

Crossfield/Madden Beef Club. The Foundation of

Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation is the

charity that they have chosen to support this year.

The charity lamb project will sell at the live auction

on Sunday, May 31 starting at 10:45 a.m.

CANINE

You do not need livestock to be a part of 4-H.

Canine projects are showcased at 4-H on Parade

in the Ag Barn for the weekend. Members and

their furry friends participate in different

classes and have presentations about caring for

your dog. The classes available for canine are

showmanship obedience and agility.

BEEF HEIFER

This year in the Agrium Western Event Centre

you will be able to see the female beef shows

that are taking place. Members with females

will partake in conformation classes and

showmanship classes. Conformation classes are

when the judge is analyzing the actual animal

for different things like structure, balance,

udder development, legs and feet. Showmanship

is judged on how well the member shows off

their project to the judge. The show ring will be

busy with yearling heifers, 2 year old and 3 year

old cows. Some members will show all of the

previous projects in the herd class. That is a lot of

work having that many animals on park so make

sure you show your support for the kids!

BEEF STEER

Steers are another large project that many

members take on. Steer projects, like the

females, participate in conformation and

showmanship classes. However the steer projects

are judged differently than the females. In

steers, the judges are looking for finish, fat cover

and structure. On Sunday the steers will be sold

in the sale along with the sheep. Raising beef

animals takes a lot of patience and hard work!

The 2015 Chairty Steer project is donated by Irricana

Beef and Multi. The charity that they have chosen this

year is the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The charity

steer project will sell at the live auction on Sunday,

May 31 starting at 10:45 a.m

CLEAVER KIDS

4-H on Parade offers a Cleaver Kids program

to members to those members whose leaders

signed them up. The Cleaver Kids Event will

happen on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with

a break for lunch. The Cleaver program is for

youth under the age of nine. They are the up

and coming 4-H members that are learning how

much fun 4-H is! There will be over 50 children

participating in this program this year.
