4-H Leaders Meetings
The next meeting for the Prairie Winds 4-H Leaders Council is
scheduled for Monday, June 4th beginning at 6:30 pm at the SDSU
Pierre Regional Center.
The Sully County 4-H Leaders’ Council is scheduled for Monday,

Swine YQCA Training Required
South Dakota 4-H has partnered with YQCA to provide
youth the YQCA certification training program to swine
exhibitors.
ALL youth exhibiting swine at COUNTY AND
STATE FAIR MUST complete the certification
training. For complete information on YQCA, visit
the iGrow website. This has been advertised in previous
4-H newsletters.
June 12, 2018 beginning at 6 pm a Swine YQCA
Certification Training has been scheduled at the
SDSU Pierre Regional Center.
I have attached a help sheet from YQCA for Getting
your YQCA Instructor-Led Training Certification regis-
tered. These sheets walk/youth/parents through the reg-
istration, payment, YQCA course processes and how to
access/save/print your certificate. When registering,
participants will want to sign-up for the “SDSU Ex-
tension Pierre Regional Center” location.
Livestock Judging School A Livestock Judging School is scheduled for Wednes-
day, June 13th beginning with registration at 6:30
pm and judging at 7 pm at the Joe Schomer Barn locat-
ed on the Stanley County Fairgrounds.
County and State 4-H Horse Shows The County Horse Show will be held on Monday, June
18, 2018 at the Stanley County Fairgrounds. Members
who have completed the training, uploaded all their in-
formation into 4HOnline will receive information.
An informational letter and entry blank has been
emailed to members who have completed the Horse
Safety Training.
There will be NO concessions, instead there will be a
potluck at noon and everyone is encouraged to par-
ticipate. Please bring meat, salad or a dessert to
share. Be sure to bring plenty of water for the day!
State 4-H Horse Show is July 23-25,
2018 at the SD State Fairgrounds, Huron,
SD. Registration deadline for this event is
July 3, 2018. The State 4-H Horse Show Contestant
Packet can be found on the iGrow and/or the 4-H web-
site.
Display Exhibit Entries Registration
All display exhibits for the Prairie Winds and Sully
County 4-H Achievement Days will need to be complet-
ed by the 4-H family using the online FairEntry system.
DISPLAY EXHIBITS ONLY for 4-H Achievement
Days will need to be entered between June 18th and July
20th for all three counties. There will be no pre-
registration form for display exhibits this year. It is the
4-H family’s responsibility to get their entries entered.
Livestock pre-registration forms will be due July 20th
into the 4-H Office. The livestock on these pre-
registration forms are not to be entered on FairEntry
for 4-H Achievement Days. These pre-registration
forms will be emailed out by June 18th, please be looking
for this upcoming email.
For those members that do not have computer access or
having problems getting your exhibits entered, please
contact the 4-H Office to set up a time to come in and get
your exhibits entered.
Remember, members are limited to 2 exhibits per lot (ex.
Visual Arts Leather, you can have 2 original and 2 kit/
patter items; Home Environment, you can have 2 Recy-
cled/Remade, 2 Wall or Door Item for Your Home, etc.).
Remember, I’m only in the office 19 hours per week,
Monday 8 am to 3 pm; Tuesday and Wednesday 8 am
to 2 pm. With the upcoming busy summer events
scheduled, the office hours may be different than what is
mentioned above. Be sure to call the 4-H Office to make
sure I’m in the office before you come.

Sully County Consumer Decision Making
Judging School A Consumer Decision Making Judging School is sched-
uled for Tuesday, June 19th beginning at 9 am till 12
Noon at the Presbyterian Church in Onida, SD.
4-H Consumer Decision Making There are kits available for check out by clubs. Club
leaders need to contact the 4-H Office a couple weeks in
advance to reserve a kit. The Consumer Decision Mak-
ing kits included the following classes: Clothing & Tex-
tiles; Entertainment & Leisure; Nutrition; Personal Care;
and Personal Finance. Beginners and Juniors will have a
one set of check-type reasons and Seniors will have one
class of oral reasons in each kit. Members will need to
complete two judging kits to be eligible to go to the
South Dakota State Fair to judge. The 4-H Office will
have all three kits available to judge on Wednesday,
July 11th at the 4-H Office until 1:30 pm.
YOUTH-IN-ACTION
Special Foods This event combines food preparation skill, nutrition
knowledge and aesthetic awareness. The member plans
and prepares a nutritious dish, an accompanying menu
and table setting to enhance the dish. During the prepa-
ration the participant is given the opportunity to share
their knowledge of the nutrient composition of the dish.
A Special Foods Contest is scheduled for Wednesday,
July 18th at the Community Bible Church beginning
at 1:30 pm. Pre-registrations are due to the 4-H Office
no later than Monday, July 16th by 3 pm.
A new Special Foods Handbook has been uploaded unto
the 4-H website along with the 2018 Special Foods Con-
testant Packet.
Public Presentations
Public presentations is a Youth-in-Action event that any
4-H member may participate in. The categories are
demonstration, illustrated talk, project why, and public
speaking. The public presentation contest is scheduled
for Thursday, August 2nd beginning at 1 pm at the
SDSU Pierre Regional Center. Pre-registrations are due
Monday, July 30th by 3 pm.
Fashion Revue Fashion Revue is a 4-H Youth-in-Action
event that promotes life skills such as clothing
selection, fit, coordination, and construction. Each 4-
Her constructs and/or selects his/her own garment in
which to model in front of a panel of judges. Through
participation in this event, 4-Hers have the opportunity
to learn about wardrobe selection, accessorizing, poise,
presence, and consumer purchasing/buying techniques.
The Fashion Revue Contest is scheduled for Thursday,
August 2nd beginning at 3 pm with a Fashion Revue
Workshop and judging to begin at 4 pm. Fashion Re-
vue will be held at the SDSU Pierre Regional Center.
Pre-registrations are due Monday, July 30th by 3 pm.
New this year, all 4-H members (beginner, junior, and
senior) are eligible to participate in the Fashion Revue
Contest at the SD State Fair.
These youth-in-action events are open to all 4-H mem-
bers in Stanley/Sully/Hughes Counties.

Poultry Testing Information
Pullorum testing for all poultry, which includes chick-
ens and waterfowl (turkey and pigeons do not need this
test) being shown at Achievement Days and/or State
Fair will be held on July 21st beginning at 8:00 am
(CT) at the Schomer Barn. YOU MUST REGISTER
THE NUMBER OF BIRDS YOU WILL BE TEST-
ING WITH JACKIE BY JULY 16th BY 3 PM.
This will be your only opportunity for testing. A blood
sample will be drawn from each bird on the day of the
test. Please make sure your birds are healthy and
clean. Cost for testing will be $2 per bird.
After the test, Crystal Neuharth will provide you with a
pullorum test form which you will need to take to your
vet when you go in to get your health certificate. Please
keep a copy of this form for yourself as it may be re-
quested at the shows.

Horticulture Judging
Please let the 4-H Office know if you are interested in doing horticulture judging by July 1st. The 4-H Office would like to
know for sure because vegetables will need to purchased for this judging. Also, study material is on the 4-H website, so be
sure to check it out, there will be some questions off this material at the judging.
County Dog Show
The County Dog Show will be held Tuesday, July 31 at the Schomer Barn beginning at 9 am. Practice shows will be
Thursday, July 26 at 6 pm at Devine Park and Sunday, July 29 at 5 pm to set-up at the Schomer Barn and practice show to
follow. Pre-registration forms will be sent out to those individuals who plan on participating in the county dog show and
are due to the 4-H Office, no later than Tuesday, July 24th by 2 pm.
NEW! 4-H Photography Changes NEW!
For the animal class/lot, 4-H members have the option of either displaying their photo as in years past (actual photo matted
on the foam core board) or they can submit their photo online through FairEntry.
Also, this year, SD 4-H will have a theme for photos that will be included in the 2019 4-H Calendar. This theme is barns
for the upcoming 2019 4-H Calendar. This can be part or all of the barn, inside or outside. Be creative in your photos.
The 2020 SD 4-H Calendar theme is Honoring Those Who Serve Our Country.
Companion Animal Changes
There will no longer be a healthy cat/kitten show. Start-
ing this year, cat showmanship will go under the Com-
panion Animal project area. If you don’t want to partic-
ipate in the cat showmanship, you can still exhibit your
cat/kitten in the Companion Animal Show.
Members who want to participate in the Companion
Animal Show, will need to check out the Companion
Animal (Cat) Book on the 4-H website. It has a wealth
of information for you to get ready for the county show.
Be sure to get your companion animals registered on
4HOnline before the June 1st deadline.
Horticulture Skill-A-Thon Horticulture Skill-A-Thon consists of four parts:
Judging
Reasons (optional, depending on materials
available)
Written tests
Plant identification
Contest participants need to identify common plants
from any of these parts: root, stem, flower or seed. Par-
ticipants will also need to identify vegetables, fruits,
nuts and berries, flowers and indoor plants, just to name
a few.
Beginners: 1 class vegetable judging
1 class fruit judging
1 class vegetable identification (edible portions
only)
1 class from the Beginner Plant Parts Study Guide
and Your Vegetable Garden Study Guide
Juniors: 1 class vegetable judging
1 class fruit judging
1 class flowers/indoor plants judging

1 class from NJHA study guides. For 2018 the
Study Guides will be: Plant Propagation;

REMEMBER ~ Animal Registration
Papers This is the exhibitor’s responsibility to upload to
4HOnline by July 1, 2018. As in the past, purebred
animals need to have registration papers uploaded to
4HOnline by the required deadline of July 1, 2018. RE-
MINDER: Purebred animals that are leased DO need
registration papers. In leasing situations, exhibitors
must upload registration papers to 4HOnline by July 1.
The same animal owner name listed on the SD 4-H Ani-
mal Projects Lease Form should appear on the registra-
tion paper, therefore, the registration paper does not
need to be in the exhibitor’s name.
Blanket Buddies
Just a reminder, that any 4-H member, club or family
can participate in the SD 4-H Youth Council Statewide
Community Service Project “Blanket Buddies”. Fleece
tie blankets are to be made and donated to a local health
facility, shelter and/or food pantry for a few examples.
HOSTA Training Reminder SDSU Extension will host Hazardous Occupation Safe-
ty Training in Agriculture (HOSTA) certification course
on:
June 5 and 6, at the Brown County Clubhouse (400
24th Ave., NW, Aberdeen, SD). Deadline to register
June 1.
June 7 and 8, at the Deuel County 4-H Service Center
(47625 181st St., Clear Lake, SD). Deadline to register
June 1.
June 12 and 13, at the Walter Taylor 4-H Building
(Pennington County Fairgrounds, 601 E Centre St.,
Rapid City, SD). Deadline to register is June 8.
Youth 12-18 are welcome to attend. Youth age is refer-
ring to age on the first day of the event. Youth younger
than 14 will receive a manual but, cannot become fully
certified, as they cannot complete the driving portion
until they are 14. Youth 14-15, will receive certification
(which allows them to work on their family farm, for
other farmers) if they complete the entire class and
achieve passing scores on the written test and driving
test. Youth 16-18 are encouraged to attend to learn more
about safety around agricultural operation. Based on age
they are not required to complete certification to be able
to work for farmers.
Online Registration
Online registration is available by going to iGrow.org.,
choose the session you want to attend and click on the
order now button to register. A minimum of 10 registra-
tions is required to hold this training. If cancelled regis-
trants will receive email notice and refunds (minus the
cost of manuals sent at registration $20). Payment can
be made either by credit card or check. To pay by check,
select Show other payment options below the Order
Now button and mail payment to iGrow, SAG 217, Box
2207, SDSU, Brookings, SD 57007. When sending a
check, pay attention to the deadline date.
Food Preservation Exhibitors
Before long you will be canning your produce
from your garden. To insure that you are using the correct
guidelines for canning, I have included some links for you
to use for your canning process.
Fruits and Vegetables; Jams, Jellies and Preserves; Meat,
Pickles, Salsa, and Tomatoes are to use the USDA Com-
plete Guide to Home Canning and for Pickles, I have also
included a link from NDSU Cooperative Extension Ser-
vice, Making Pickled Products.
