    BELIEVE IT OW NOTWh at would be the reaction of the good ordinary Americancitizen, whose ears were assailed with such tommyrot. Firstof all, he would deny the possibility of ever licaring or read ingsuch to n~m yro t. Secondly, he would say t hat th e author of anysuch staten~ents,either in books or over the radio, condemnshimself and destroys his authority by malting them.Yet, believe it or not, such thought s and hundred s of others,just as unreliable, are actually presented in pamphlets and boolrsand over the radio and on phonographs. These, and manyothers, are the malicious, ignorant and unfounded statementsof the present hea d of a group called Jehovah's Witn esses , onewho call2 himself "Judge" Ruth erfor d, but who, in all accuracy,

    What claim has Joseph Rutherford to the title "Judge"?Th e following facts, which were drawn from the Circuit Cou rtRecords of Cooper and Morgan Co unties, Missouri, by Fathe rFelix, O.S.B., ar e Lhe only evidence that can be gathered in themat ter of Rutherfo rd's "Judgeship."L E G A L BA CK G RO U N D

    Rutherford was a lawyer in Missouri. He graduated fromno law school. H e received no law degree. H e became a law-yer by first becoming a Court Stenographer. On the basis of

    his experience as a Court Stenographer Rutherford applied to beadmitted as a member of the Missouri Bar. H e was examinedby a comniit tee of five members of t he Ba r at Boonville, Mis-souri, and ad mit ted to the Ea r of t he St at e of TvIissouri, May 5,1892. It is significant that he received no such formal and thor-ough and cultural training in the taw and in legal history andpractice as that which is furnished by modern law schools.As a lawyer, Rutherford, like all other lawyers in the Staleof Missouri, was privileged by law to sit in place of t he regul arPresiding Judge of th e Circuit Court whenever th e latter wasabsent and until the latter returned. In other words, he waspermitted to sit in place of t he Judge. He did not preside overthe Circuit Court in his own name or in his own right. TheStatu tes of t he Stat e of Missouri permitted th e lawyers in a Cir-cuit District to select one of their members to preside over theCircuit Court until the regular Circuit Court Judge returned.

    JUDICIAL BACKGROUNDRutherford performed the duties of an "Acting Judge" fo rfour days. On two occasions there were no cases to be tried.On the other two occasions only minor cases arose. Th is is theonly way in which Rutherford ever sat upon a Bench. At most,he was an Acting Judge for four days.Moreover, since Rutherford denounces all civil governmentas the child of Sa tan and a s the Abomination of Desola tion, heshould be consistent and forever renounce the title which hehugs to his heart and which is bait to capture the attention ofhis audiences. Ho w can the "great Ruthcrford," who denouncesall governments as the offspring of Satan and who declares thatno one connected with th e government of th e United St ates ison th e side of God, allow people to call him by a t itle whic h as-

    sociates him with a judicial branch of gover nmen t. If the gov-ernment i s the child of Satan , then the branches of government,according to Rutherford, mus t be likewise Satanical. The nalso, if Ruth erford is logical, any title indicating t he hold ing ofoffice in such Satanic government s must be Satanical. On th estren gth of Rutherford 's own statemen ts concerning the Sataniccharacter of all civil gov ernments, includin g the gov ernment ofthe United State s of America, we cannot imagine how he cantolerate the title "Judge" for a single instant.He should also warn his followers against using it. I n usingit they are subjecting Rutherford, according to his own state-ments, to a diabolical insult.     least be accurate and unite with us in referring to Rutherf ord asJudge-"for four daysu-Rutherford. Thi s will be in accordwith facts. Thi s will stop anyone from presuming that Ru ther-ford ever performed judicial du ties for a long period of time.Hencefor th, we shall refer to th e subject of th is analysis asJudge-"for four daysv-Rutherford.P ATR IOTIC (?) BACKGROUND

    In this analysis of the message which Judge-"for four days"-Rutherford shouts a t his Jehovah's Witnesses, we are not in-terested in the private life of the "Judge." In fact, up to thetime when he joined t he followers of the late Charles T. ussell,whom he succeeded, his private life holds no interest for anyone.He was born in Missouri on November 8, 1869. H e became alawyer in the manner already mentioned.For four days he was selected by his fellow-lawyers to pre-side over a Circuit Court in the absence s f the Circuit CourtJudge. He became an attorney for Charles T. Russell, the foun-der of th e Russcllites or Millennia1 Dawn People. I n 1876, Rus-sell 66discovered", lthoug h he never let anyone in to th e secret ofhis "discovery", tha t Christ had returned t o the ear th invisibly,in 1874. Wh en Past or Russell, whose wife had been grant ed adivorce in 1897 for infidelity and c ruel ty, died in 1916, Judge-"for four daysH-Rutherford succeeded him. He became head ofthe International Bible Students' Association and of the WatchTower Bible and Tract Society.In 1918 he was arre sted and tried and convicted of wilfullyand illegally conspiring to produce ir~subordinationand disloy-alty on the part of th e arme d forces of th e United States. H ewas sentenced to twenty years, but was released, after the warwas over, on May 16, 1919. Since then, his tirade against or gan-ized government in general, and against the governm ent of theUnited Sta tes in particular, has continued. TJnder the spell ofhis long, intricate an d hopelessly unintelligible sentences th e fol-lowers of Russell have become known a s "Jehovah's Witnesses."

    COMMERCIAL BACKGROUNDTh e headq uarte rs of Jehovah's Witne sses is in Brooklyn,New York. According to rccent articles ill the New York P ost,the property at 122-24 Colum1)ia Ilcights is assessed on the citytax rolls at $425,000, while that at 117 Adalns Street is assessedat $325,000. Th is is quite a sizable and valuable bit of real es tateto be owned by a group whose "judicial" leader denounces allcommerce as the operation of the devil.

    According to the articles which appeared in the July 15th,16th and 17th issues of the Ne w Y ork Post, some 42,000 "pub-lishers" or "pioneers" o f Judge-"for four daysw-Rutherfordare paid to sell his pamphlets and books and magazines through-out the country. Th e radio station of th e "Witnesses" is ownedby th e Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Seventeen bookshave been writ ten by Judge-"for fou r days9'-Rutherford.Twenty-five cents apiece is the price required for the privilegeof wading through the chaotic thought processes and the garbledscriptural interpretations contained in these books. According to theNcw York Post , 1,008,127 copies of the volume entitled "Salvation"were printed and sold in three months. According to the "Yearbookof Jehovah's Witnesses", some 309,484,991 books and booklets havebeen distributed throughout the world since 1920.

    P R OF ITAB LE ADDITIONIn addition to his books, J u d g ~ " f o r our days9'-Ruther-ford has written thirty-three sixty-four page pamphlets. Thenthere is the scrni-monthly magazine called "The Watchtower"and the bi-weeltly magazine called "Consolation". The se worksof Judge-"for four days7'-Rutherford have appeared in eighty-eight languages.Add to these the 109 discs, whose duplicates carry the"Judge's" chaotic thought processes and garbled scriptural in-terpretations to those not f ortuna te enough to live close to thesociety's headquarters..Add to these th e fact tha t over one hundred and thirty-eightrad io stat ions ca rry th e voice of Judge-'Tor fou r days9'-Rutherford every week in the United States alone.Add to these the fact that his ar my of Brooklyn workers, whoproduce the paper, the covers, the ink, the paint, the paste, and who

    print his vast ar ray of publicity, receive only $10 a month.Add to these the fac t that millions of copies of hi s booksbri ng in 25 cents api ece ; that millions of co,pies of his pam-phlets bring in 5 cents apiece; that his own manufactured por-table phonographs, together with three recordings by the"Judge", bring in 10 dollars apiece; tha t the discs, duplicatingsome "original" broadcast of th e "Judge" sell for 70 cent s apiece.Add all these facts, which were gathered by t he special fea-ture wr iter of the 'New York Post, and you have a compositepicture of a monumental business and commercial and profitableoperation in the contro l of a man w ho ra nts against all commerceas th e operation of t he devil. The poor people who are per-suaded to part with their hard-earned money for the books and

    pamphlets and magazines and phonograph records of Judge-"for four daysv-Rutherford should know these facts. Wh enthey give money for one of th e "Judge's" magazines o r booksor pamphlets or records, they are, in the "Judge's" opinion,really playing into the hands of the devil, for, according to th e"Judge's" own statements , commerce, like government, is thewor k of t he devil.The purpose of this pamphlet is to show th at Judge-"forfour days'-Rutherford has no rig ht to set himself up as a judgein religious or scriptural matters. Th e purpose of this pamphletis to warn all real American citizens that the "Judge" is anti-Protestant, anti-Catholic, anti-Jewish, anti-American, the enemyof religion, the enemy of our country and the enemy of common sense.11.

    H I S W R I T I NG SThere i s only one class of people with whom t he rantings ofth e "Judge" have an y influence. He depends for his successupon the fact that many people no longer read the Bible. H eappeals, therefore, to those who love the Bible but who do notread it. No Catholic, no Protes tant, no Jew, indeed, no Ameri-can, to whatever religion he may belong, who reads the Biblecan help but discover the ignorance, the delusion and the false-hood of the "Judge's" so-called Biblical inte rpret atio ns.W e appeal to the Jehovah Witnesses themselves t o read theBible. W e appeal to them t o re-read the particular boolcs ofRutherford which we shall use as evidence. If they do so,calmly and honestly and sincerely, they will soon renounce thefantasti c, intellectual slav ery in which Judge-"for fou r days9'-

    Rutherford holds them.W e have the greatest sympathy for those who accept the"Judge's" Biblical inte rpret atio ns as infallible, simply becausethe "Judge" says so. W e believe tha t they have accepted th e"Judge?s"interpretationswithout reading the Bible and withoutdemanding any proof. By indulging in constant quotationsfrom the Bible the "Judge" palms himself off a s an educated andlearned man. Th at impression will disappear by reading th eBible and by analyzin g the "Judge's" use of the Bible.I t is significant that the vast majori ty of th e "Judge's" Biblequotations are from the Old Testament and from the Book ofthe Apocalypse (otherwise known a s the Book of Revelations)in the New Test ament . Th e "Judge" practically ignores thefour Gospels. He twists the Old Testament accounts and the8

    prophecies in the Book of Reve lations in order to apply themto any event to which the "Judge" wishes them t o apply.RUTH ERFOR D VS. ISAIAH

    Thus, the "Judge" stat es that th e words of th e prophet Isaiah,eighth chapter, verses 12 an d 13, refer to the League of Nationsthat was founded at the end of the last World W ar. On page253 of his book entitled "Salvation", th e "Judge" st at es : "It wa sfear that induced the rulers to for m the League of Nations; andhence the y acted under the direction of Satan. God warned hispeople to have nothing to do with such a confederacy of nations,but that they should fear God; and his promise is that to tllesnhe will be a sanctuary (Isaiah 8 :12, 13)."In this particular case, the "Judge" is guilty of an absolut efalsehood. I t is false to declare, as the "Judge" does, that t hewords of t he twelfth a nd thirteenth verses of t he eighth chap-te r of th e Book of Is aiah refer to the Le agu e of Natio ns estab-lished at the close of the last Worl d W ar.

    Here are th e exact words of the prophet Isaiah:" S a y y e n o t : A conspiracy. F o r al l that th is people speaketh, is aconspiracy. Ne i the r fear ye their fear, nor be afraid."Sanc t i f y t he Lord of H os t s h im se l f : and l e t him b e y o u r f e w ;and let hi m be your dread." A n d he shaU be a sanctijicatiolz to you: but for a stolze of sturn-bling avzd for a rock of o ffe me t o the tw o houses of Israe l, for osnare as5d a rt4ilz to the iazhabitants of Jerusalem."

    W e ask the Witnesses themselves: where is there a men-tion of the League of Nati ons in these words ? By wh at rightdid Judge-"for fou r days7'-Rutherford tr y to deceive peopleinto believing that in these verses of t he Prophet Isaiah he ha dexplicit condemnation of the particular Leagu e of Nations estab-lished at th e close of t he last World W ar ?Th e wor ds of Isa iah refer t o a "conspiracy". No mention ismade of a League of Nat ions . The prophet clearly states thatth e conspiracy mentioned in thes e verses is one of words. "Forall that this people speaketh," says the prophet, "is a conspiracy."Th e enemy of God, here mentioned by the prophet, is "the twohouses of Israel" and "the inhabit ants of Jerusalem." By wh atrig ht does the "Judge" tr y to deceive people by quoti ng wordsfrom the Prophet Isaiah which do not prove his point. If the"Judge" wants t o denounce the Leag ue of Nations , tha t is hisaffair. But to declare, as he did declare, that God denouncedthe modern League of Nations in the twelfth and thirteenthverses sf the eighth chapter of th e Eook of Isaiah, is a lie. Does

    Judge-"for fou r days"-Rutherford kno w any thing abo ut th eScriptures? Does he not know that in these verses the ProphetIsaiah is reproving the Jews for their sins and warning them ofthe evils which will come upon them for having sinned.The question here is not whether God approves or disap-proves of the modern Leag ue of Nat ions o r of any league ofnati ons. Th e question is not whether Judge-"for four daysw--Rutherford approves or disapproves of th e modern League ofNations or of any league of nations. Th e question here is tha tth e "Judge" tried to have his readers believe tha t the twelfthand thir teent h verses of t he eighth chap ter of th e Book of Isaia hcontained a warning by God that people should have nothingto do with the particular modern Le ague of Nations establishedat the close of th e World War. Th e verses contain no suchthing. Th e "Judge" is guilty of a falsehood statin g so. T h e"Judge" is also guilty of fraud and deceit for trying t o make hisreaders accept his lie.J~dge--~''for four daysH-Rutherford is unfit to be acceptedas a religious leader by anyone, including those who now accepthis leadership an d who are known as Jehovah's Witnesses. W edesire the Witnesses to read this pamphlet and, then, to askthemselves whether th e "Judge" possesses those qualities andvirtues which should be expected from one who holds himselfforth as a teacher or preacher or leadel- ul: spirilual realities.If they are honest and sincere and unprejudiced in their reac-tions, they will admit t hat the "Judgey* does not possess them .

    MERCENARY APPEAL SW e have already indicated the mercenary an d commercialfactors in the "Judge's'konduct of big business. Th e "Judge"hiinself declares how interested he is in securing gold and silverfrom those to whom he preaches. The following appeal formoney is made by the "Judge9' in an advertisement which ap-pears on page 35 0 of his book entitle d "Riches."

Again we state that it is amusing to find the "Judge"indulging in commercial operations, when he declares in hi swritin gs tha t commercial operations are of t he devil.

    WANTS EVERYTI-IEINGIt is important to remember that according to the "Judge's"private interpret ation of the Bible only 144,000 people ar e evergoing to heaven. According to him, most of the people borninto the world, from th e very beginning of creation, are lostforever. Onl y a few million, according to the "'Judge", will beforever happy. The se latte r millions will no t be admitted to

    heaven, Th ey will live forever upon the earth. T h e "Judge"refers to them as "Jonadabs." In pursuance of the mercenarymotive, th e "Judge" has this to say about th e duty of the,"Jona-dabs" toward s Jehovah's Witnesses. On page 269 of his book"Salvation," the "Judge" stat es: "The Jonadah s or 'other sheep'have declared themselves for Jehovah and his kingdom. I t istherefore their privilege and their obligation to give all theirsupport to God's kingdom, and that lneans their time, theirenergy, their money, and everything, to advance the kingdominterest. . . . After providing the necessary material things foroneself and one's dependent ones, then if he is in a covenantwith the Lord it is his ~ri vi le ee nd dutv to use his substanceto furt her the interest of th e cord's ]kingdom."MERCENARY HYPOCRISY

    T he "Judge" condemns anyone who gives suppo rt t o religion.He condemns the Catholic for supporting thc Catholic Church.H e condemns th e Protestant for supporting his particular Prot -estant Church. I3e condemns the Jew for supporting the JewishChurch. But he is most anxious to secure support for his owngroup. In fact, as the foregoing quotation reveals, he wantseverything, beyond what is actually neekled by a Jonadab forthe support of the Jonadab and his dependents.According to the "Judge", it is wro ng for a decent Americancitizen to worship God in his own church and to sup,port tha tchurch. Simultaneously, according t o the "Judge9' thos e whowish t o follow him must give him all their earthly goods, beyondwha t is absolutely needed fo r personal or famil y support. Thisis mercenary hypocrisy. I t should condemn th e "Judge's" ap-peal immediately in th e mind of everyone visited b y his "Wit-nesses." Th e Churches of America merely ask their members

    Strangely enough, the "Judge" condemns himself in hi s ownTh e "Judge" claims tha t he and his "Witnesses" ar eth e Apostles. Christ, the "Judge" state s,Jehovah's King.     SELF-CONDEMNATIONIt is not to be wondered at t ha t a man of such pride andown works. Th e "Judge" rants over the radio and by means

    the same material in different books. The "Judge" sends out his"Witnesses" to bring his message to the homes of America. And yet,here is what the "Judge" himself says about his own activities.On page 168 of his book entitled "Riches," the "Judge" say s:

    "If you conte in contact wi th mere or organizations of m en thatare reaclqitzg out for gain, wlzetker that gain. be num bers iw th eir~ r g a a ~ i z a t i o n ,r property, m,orLey, power or tnfluence, avoid suclz,because they canrzot be the serara%ts of God."Th e ""ydge," as we have seen, is interested in getting every-thing from the people who follow him, except that which isabsolutely necessary fo r their own personal an d domestic main-tenance. Th e "Judge," therefore, is a man "reaching o ut forgain."IHis organiza tion, Jehovah's Witnes ses, which is anorganizat ion of men, is likewise "reaching o ut for gain.'?Therefore, to follow the "'Judge's9' advice, he himseli and hisWitnesses, who force their presence upon American house-holds, should be avoided, because, as the "Judge" says, "theycannot be the se rvant s of God."On page 135 of his book cntitled "'Ri~hes,~'he "Judge" say s:

For the "Judge" harangues the peopleand states his own conclusions. Only a minor portion of hisbooks is devoted t o actual quotations from the Scriptures. The"'Judge" uses millions of words and thousands of lines and hun-dreds of chapters to state HIS OWN CONCLUSIONS aboutwhat he reads in the Bible. W e have already seen how the"Judge" has lied about the twelfth and thirtee nth verses of theeigh th chapte r of the Book of Isaiah. Since the '"udge"harangues the people and states H I S OW N CONCLUSIONS,he is a "windjammer." Th e citizens of th e United States shouldbe on guard against the windjamming Judge.

    Judge-"for fou r days9'-Rutherford is th e enemy of Christ.W e have already shown how the "Judge" looks upon Christ asa failure. For nineteen hundred years Christ has failed to vin-dica te the Name of Jehovah, says th e "Judge." He , the "Judge,'?will do in a little while what Christ failed to do in a big while.In the thi rty-third verse of the sixteenth chapte r of S t.John's Gospel, Chr ist urged Hi s followers to have confidencebecause He overcame the wo rld: "But have confidence. I haveovercome th e world." The "Judge,'%owever, refuses to acceptthis. According to the "Judge," Christ was only a man.According to the "Judge," Christ did not become king unti l1914. According to the "Judge," Christ did not begin to judgemankind until 1918. According to th e "Judge," Christ has beena failure for nineteen hundre d years. According to the "Judge,"Christ did not overcome th e world although Christ Himselfdeclared: "But have confidence. I have overcome the world."14

    In other words, Judge-"for four days9'-Rutherford at-tem pts t o oppose the teachings of Christ. Th e "Judge" ignoresmany of the stat ements which Christ uttered on earth.     Christ demanded that all men should believe in Him. Healso demanded that all men should keep the commandments.He furt her demanded tha t all men should become virtuous.Th e fifth, sixth and seventh chap ters of t he Gospel of Sai ntMatthew contain Christ's Sermon on the Mount. The '"udge"does not even mention the Sermon on the Mount in his bookentitlcd "Salvation." And this is th e book which the "Judge"states, on the title page, to be "A text book for the Jonadabs."Evidently t he "Judge9' is not interested in th e moral teachingsof Christ.In His Sermon on the Mount Christ declared that we mustlove all our neighbors, including our enemies. "But I say toyou: Love your enemies: d o good to them that hate you: Andpray for them that persecute ant1 calunlnia te you." (Sain t Mat-thew V:44). In all his boolts, the "Judge" preaches hatredtoward s those who practice religion and to wards those who areloyal to their count ry.     quoted, Christ is emphasizing th e doctrine of salvation for all.This does not mean that all will be saved. I t does mean tha tsalvation is offered to a11 and that Christ died for all men andnot for a favored few. Men must accept salvation by belief inChrist and by doing the things which Christ commanded. Butthe salvation is there for all, and Christ shed His Precious Bloodfor all. This is why Saint John the Baptist cried out as Christapproached: "Behold t he Lamb of God. Behold Him Wh otaket h away the sin of th e world."Th e ""$dge," however, denies this teaching of Christ. H edeclares tha t salvation is not for all. EIe insists th at Chris tdid not die for all. T o say that the fatherdoes not provide food for all his children, simply because someof th em refuse to accept it, is to charge the fath er with neglectand cruclty. The correct statement is to say that the fatherprovides food for all his children but, unfortunate ly, so me ofthem will not eat it. Christ declares that H e died for all andthat salvation is for all. Th e "Judge" declares tha t Christ didnot die for all and that salvation is not for all. All lovers ofChrist will accept Christ in preference to the "Judge."DENI ES JEHOVAH W ANTS ALL MEN SAVED

    On page 30 of his book entitled i'Riches," the "Judge" declares:"It is equally erroneous to say tha t God tries to save any one."On page 92 of "Riches" the "Judge" similarly declares : "Let itbe kept clearly in mind that Jehovah God is not trying to save men."Saint Paul in his epistle to Timothy, as we have seen,stat es th at God "will have all men to be saved." Christ saidthat H e came into the world to save the world. Christ didnot declare that H e came only to save some. H e said H e camet o save all, the entire world. Th e "Judge" denies the stateme ntof Christ and the statenlent of Saint Paul. No sensible manor woman will follow the "Judge" in preference t o Christ an dSaint Paul.

    DENIES CHRIST'S BODILY RESURRECTIONChrist rose from the dead, whole and entire, with a real body.After EIis Resurrection, Christ talked with His disciples. T oprove the reality of His bodily resurrection H e "showed th emhis hands and his side." T o Thomas, the doubting Apostle,EIe said: "Put in thy finger hither and see my hands. And

    The Scripture clearly teaches, therefore, the bodily resurrec-tion of Christ from the dead. Th e "Judge" boasts that he be-lieves in the Scriptures and that all his teachings are scripturalteachings. And yet, wherever he refers to Christ's resurrection,the "Judge" denies that it was a bodily resurrection and asse rtsth at Christ's"resurrection was merely a resurrection of Hi s spirit.Typical of the "Judge's" denial of thi s clear teaching ofChrist a nd this clear evidence of the Scriptu res is th e "Judge's9'statement on page 172 of "Salvation," his self-styled "text book"for the Jona dabs: "God raised Jesus o ut of de ath and gave himlife as a spirit." This statement of th e ""Jdge's" is a denial ofwha t Christ teaches and of wha t the Scriptur es record. Christsaid tha t His Resurrection was a bodily resurrection. The"Judge" says it was not.DENIES GENER AL R ESUR R EC TION OF T H E D EA D

    One of the im portant an d striking teachings of Chris t is thegeneral resurrection of all the dead. In that resurrection, asChrist taught, We himself would be the judge. Two eternaljudgments will be decreed: everlasting happiness for the goodand everlasting punishment for the wicked. But, as Christtaught, both the good and the bad will be resurrected from thedead.Thu s, we read, in the 28th and 29th verses of the fifth chapterof Saint John's Gospel, the following words of Christ Himself:"W on de r not at th is: for the hour conzeth, wheyeiw all that are inthe graves shall hear the voice of the So n of God."An d the y that have dolze good things shall cw m ~orth rtnto theresurrection of lif e: but th ey that have done evil, unto the reszrrrec-tio n of judgm ent."

    I t is important to note that Christ said: "all tha t are in thegraves" shall come forth in the general resurrection.18

    I n the twenty-fifth chapter of Saint Matthew' s Gospel, wehave Christ's own description of the last judgment. The entirechapter should be read, particularly verses 31-46. In theseverses, Christ teaches t hat H e will come in majesty t o judgethe world. All nations shall be gathered before Hi m: the goodas well as the bad. Upon both he will pronounce judgment.T h e good will be eternally rewarded. Th e bad will be eternallypunished. In other words, the last judgment will be precededby a genera l resurrection of all : the wicked as well as the good.For the s ake of brevi ty w e here quot e verses 31-34, 41 an d46, of t he twenty-fift h chapter of Sain t Matthew's Gospel:"A nd when the Son of m an shull come in his majesty, nlzd all thzangels m't h him , then shnU h e sit upon the seat of his maje sty."'And all nations shall be gathered together before him: and heshall separate them olze from another, as the shepherd separateth thesheep from the goats:"And he shall set the sheeb 0% his 9.iqh.t hand, bzet the goats 01%his lef t ."The n shall the kilzg say to them that shall be o?3 his right hand:Com e ye blessed of m y Father, possess the kingdo m prepared for youfrom the foundation of the world.     In the 15th verse of t he twenty-fourth chapter of ih e Actsof t he Apost1es;we find Saint Pa ul referring t o the "resurrectionof th e just and unjust."D E N I E S TH E GOSPEL MESSAGE

    Wha t has Judge-"for four daysy'-Rutherford to say abo utthis clear teaching of Chris t and about thi s clear evidence fromthe Scriptures? Believe it or not, he denies it. Christ teachesthe general resurrection of all the dead, both th e good and thewicked. Th e "Judge" de nies it.On .page 342 of h is book enti tled "Salvation," his "te xtbook" for the Jonadabs, the "Judge" stat es: "There appearsns. reason or Scriptural proof th at God would resurr ect thewillfully wicked." And believe it o r not, the "Judge" quotesthe 28th and 29th verses of t he fifth cha pte r of S ain t John's Gos-pel, which clearly state that all shall be resurrected: the goodunto resurrection of life and the evil unto the resurrection ofjudgment. Before quoti ng these verses the "Judge" asks: "Willnot all the dead be awakened to the resurrection? and is not19

    tha t made sure by the words of Jesus" (John 5 :25, 29). Imme-diately upon quoting these verses, the "Judge" then s tate s: "TheScriptures do not support that conclusion."Thi s is an insu lt to the intelligence of his readers as wellas a sinful denial of th e clear teaching of Jesus Christ, whoseiwords the "Judge" casts aside as of no value and of no accountand of no proof. In his efforts to deny what Christ has clearlytaught about the general resurrection of all the dead the "Judge"also ignores the account of the general resurrection given byChrist Himse lf and recorded in the twen ty-sixth chapter ofSaint Matthew's Gospel, verses 31-46.

    DISTORTS TH E MEANING O F "GRAVES"On pages 342 and 343 of his book entitled '~ al va ti on " he"Judge" tries, in vain, to wiggle out of t he clear state ment madeby Christ that all who are "in the graves" shall come forth.The subterfuge he uses is opposed to common sense as well asto the Scriptures. He says the word "grave" means a "monu-ment in remembrance of the dead." He then twis ts the word"grave" to include only thos e "held in the memory of God."He then declares, without any proof, that God has no memoryof the wicked. Therefo re, the "Judge" naively declares, whileinsulting the power of God, the word "grave" in the quotationof Saint John means only those whom God remembers, namely,the just.Thi s is a diabolical effort to's ubst itute the "Judge's" ownprivate in terpreta tion of Scripture for the clear words of Christ.Th e "Judge" ignores the teaching of Christ concerizing th egeneral resurrection of all the dead, the wicked as well as thegood, in Saint Matthew's Gospel. The "Judge" quotes Christ'swords concerning the general resurrection of all the dead inSain t John's Gospel but declares that Christ's words in Saint

    John's Gospel do not mean what they say. And to ruin furtherthe meaning of Christ's words, he indulges in a fantas tic defini-tion of the word "grave," in order that his followers may accept histeachings instead of Christ's teachings. This process makes the"Judge" the clear and confirmed and ignorant enemy of Chr ist.nT.

    ENEMY O F TH E SCRIPTURESIn addition to proving that the "Judge" is the enemy ofChrist, the foregoing material also proves that the "Judge" isthe enemy of the Scriptures. Th e "Judge" is not too anxiousfor his followers to read the Scriptu res alone. Th e "Judge"

    tolerate s no interpretation of the Scriptures which differs fromhis own mis-interpretations. In fact the "Judge" puts his ow11books upon the same level with th c Bible. You may reat1religious literature in any language, but you will go far tomeet with the arrogance and pride used by th e "Judge" whenhe speaks of his own publications. He re is a choice bit ofpride and arrogance from his book entitled "Riches," gages353-354:"The Lord has graciously provided for the publication ofHi s message in the form of books (the 'Judge' is not referringto the Bible), that the people may be informed of the tr uth(th e 'Judge' is referring to his own 'interpretations' of theBible). On the last page of this book you will find a list ofsuch publications ( the 'Judge's' own books), which will enableyou to locate in the Bible the very texts about which you desireto know, and which answer your questions. Provide yourselfwith those publications (at twenty-five cents apiece), study thesame, together with your Bible (the reader will notice thatthe 'Judge' places his books on the same footing with theinspired works of th e Bible). Those books do not contain theopinion of any man (does the 'Judge' mean to infer tha t he isnot a man?). The y merely enable you to locate the words of th eLord and to find out the very things you desire to know; anddoing this (buy ing and reading the 'Judge's' books), you areobeying God's commandments."Little need be added to the remarks which we have enclosed,in parentheses to prove to any thinking man that the "Judge"puts his own books on a par with the Bible and that his follow-ers must not read the Bible alone or indulge in their own inter-pretations. W e have already given several examples to provehow the "Judge" misuses and mis-interprets the Bible. Th efollowing additional examples are but a few of the many morethat could be offered.

    One of the insistent claims of the "Judge" is his statementthat Christ condemned religion. I3e refers to those who wor-ship God through religion as "religionists." Christ, he says,condemned all religionists. In order to prove this, the "Judge"quotes the following words from the twenty-third chapter,verses 3-4, of the Gospel of Saint Matthew:"'Do not ye af ter their wor ks . . .For they bind heavy burdens, andgrievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but the y th emselves will not m ove the m wit h one of their fingers.'"

    It is not necessary to continue this quotation to the end.T h e "Judge's" inisuse of the S criptures is present in the wor dsalrea dy quoted. Th e "Judge" would have his followers believethat, in these words, Christ condemned all religionists, religiousrnenlbers as well as religious leaders.Nothing could be further from the truth. Christ Himselfentered Jewish Synagogues. Christ Himself went up to theTemple. Christ Himself celebrated the various Jewish feasts.H e had just celebrated the Jewish Feast of the Passover whenHe was arrested by His enemies.Christ did not condemn every religion or all religionists.Christ condemned the Scribes and Pharisees, in the versesquoted by the "Judge," because they were hypocrites and notbecause they were religionists. Tt was because t hey did notlive up to the spirit of t he Jewish religion t ha t Christ condemnedthe Scribes and Pharisees. In fact, in verses two and three ofthe Scriptural quotation used by the "Judge," Christ said: "Thescribes and the Pharisees have sitt en on the chair of Moses.All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observeand do." Purpo sely and maliciously and unscripturally the"'Judge" omits these word s from his quotation. And, in versethree, the "'Judge" also omits these words : "For t hey say, anddo not." Inste ad of these words, which the "Judge" shouldhav e quoted, if he were not an enemy of the Scriptures, the"'Judge" places dots ( . . . . ) in the beginning of his quotation.

    MALICIOUS OMISSIONThese words, which the "Judge" has PURPOSELY omittedfrom his quotation, prove that Christ was condemning theScribes and Pharisees not because of religion bu t because theyhad religion and did not practice it. "For they say, and do

    not." Moreover, Christ bade the Jews to be true to religioneven when taught by the Pharisees and Scribes, and eventhough the Pharisees and Scribes themselves were negligent inthe practice of the religion which t hey preached.T he quotation used by the "Judge" to prove that Christdenounced all religions and all religionists is no proof a t all.It is a proof of t he opposite . T o conceal the fact that Christpraised religion and urged the people to practice religion, eventhough some of their leaders were guilty of not practicing whatthey preached, the "Judge" purposely omits the complete andexact words of Christ.

    Th is wilful omission on the part of th e "Judge" alone con-demns him as the enemy of th e Scriptures. No man who so22

    misuses the Scriptures is wor thy of belief. Th e "Judge" shrewd-ly omits the words of Christ when they do not s uit his own pur-pose. Th e "Judge" will twist the Scriptures in order to provehis own fantastic doctrines. No wonder the "Judge" does notwant people to read the Bible for themselves. If his followerswould only read the Bible, they would discover what a Scrip-tural sham their own leader is.T o list all the Scriptural mis-interpretations and omissions ofwhich Judge--"for four daysn-Rutherford has been guilty,and in which he indulges in order to support his own privatefantastic doctrines and to keep the truth away from his follow-ers, would require many volumes of many pages. Eno ugh ofthem have been recorded in this pamphlet to prove that just asthe "Judge" is the en emy of Christ, so he is, also, the enemy ofthe Scriptures.

    ENEMY O F COMMON SENSENo individual who possesses conlmon sense can sincerelyaccept the teach ings of Judge-"for four daysn--Rutherford.Hi s writings are full of contradictians. In order to arousehatred toward religion and government th e "Judge" indulgesin charges that have no foundation and in statements that areutterl y ridiculous.

    BODY AND SOULThu s, when the "Judge" talks abou t man's body and man'ssoul, he says one thing, one moment, and the opposite thinganother moment. Thi s is what we mean by a contradiction. Onpage 36 of his publicatioil enti tled "Salvation," the so-called'"ext book" for the Jolladabs, the "Judge" writ es:

    is one be separated? If the body and soul, as the "Judge"claims, are one and the same thing, then it is stupid to use theword "they" and more stupid t o say : "when they a re separated!'This is not a mere playing with words on our part. This isonly a common sense anal ysis of the wor ds used by the "Judge.?'H e supplied the words we are analyzing. W e are only supply-ing th e analysis.Moreover, if, as the "Judge" says, man has a soul and abody, surely, body and soul are not one and the same thing.They may be united together, as they actually are in everyman, bu t body an d soul remain distinct. Th e "Judge" himselfstates that body and soul are distinct because he talks aboutthem separately. H e even says "when they are separated."But the "Judge" immediately denies what h e states, by sayingth at th e body and soul, of which he speaks sepa rately and whichhe says will be separated, are one and the same thing. The"Judge" should have said tha t every man has a soul which isnot separated from his body on earth, but which is quite dis-tinct from his body, so that body and soul, distinct thoughunited, conhtitute a living creature.

    CHRIST" TEACHTNGTh e "Judge" does not realize that tw o things call be distinctalthough not separated. Th e "Judge" does not realize th at heis also contradicting his own false statement about the identityof soul and body, as one and th e same thing, when, on page266 of his book, "Salvation," he quotes the following words ofChrist :

    "'And fear not th ew w hich kill the body, but are not able to killthe soul; but rather fear him w hich i s able to destroy both soul andbody in hel l" (S t . Matthew X:28).Christ here plainly states that it is possible to kill the body

    I n one and the same breath the "Judge" states that i t isnot an offense to sa lute the American flag but th at it is a viola-tion of God's law. Now, if it is not an offense-and no loyalAmerican has ever considered it to be an offense, except the"Judgeu-them to salute th e flag is not a violation of God's law.An offense is something that is against God's law.     W e hope that the Witnes ses will realize that there is some-thing wr ong wit h the mental process of a leader who indulgesin such bold contradictions.     When we come to an analysis of Judge-"for four days"-Rutherford as the author of hatred and bigotry and treason,hundreds of pages could be used to record his vile and unfoundedcharges, made against Jews and Protestants and Catholics, aswell as against th e government of t he Unite d State s of Amer-ica. Th e government ofthe United States has always honored and respected religion.By his tirades against religion and by his denunciation of thegovernment of the United States1 as the child of Satan, th e""Judge" is a greater enemy in om midst than Adolf Hitler.Judge-"for four days"--Rutherford is a Fi fth Column allby himself.Christ condemned hypocrisy on the part of certain religiousleaders of His day. Christ never condemned all religions. Aswe have seen, Christ manifested the greatest respect for theJewish religion. Christ founded a religion of II is own.     The language used by the "Judge5' in his vitriolic condemna-tion of all religions, is characterized by s tupidity a s well as bymalice. Thus, on page 79 of his book entitled "Riches," the"Judge" declares tha t members of the Catholic Church are notmembers of the Catholic Church. He denies the meaning of26

    the words 'Tatholic Population," as used in the Catholic Direc-tory. He refuses to admit that "Catholic Population" means th enumbe r of those who are members of the Catholic Church. Th e""Judge" should realize that all who belong to the CatholicChurch-Pope and Bishops and Laity-are members of the Cath-olic Church. Th e Catholic Church bars none of he r membersfrom heaven. But the "Judge" bars most of his followers frometernal happiness in heaven. The "Judge" states that thereis an inner group of his Witn esses who will cons titute thc king-dom of God in heaven. All others, whose financial supl~ ol- t econtinually calls for, will be barred from heaven. 'I'l~esc arethe Jonadabs, according to his own terminology, who will beconfined to the earth while the "elect," including of course the"Judge," will rejoice in heaven.With greater ignorance and malice, the '6Judge7'even claimsthat Protestants are Catholics, although he denies that Cath-olics ar e Catholics. Hi s charge tha tProtestants and Jews and Catholics have kept the Bible awayfrom the people is false and fraudulent. In the following slan-derous statement the "Judge" lumps all religions together whenhe states: "The religious institutions have kept the Bible awayfrom the people and therefore have induced the common peo-ple to rely upon what the priests or clergymen tell them to do."During the entire existence of Judaism, Catholicism andProtesta ntism th e members of all the se religions have beenurged to read the Bible. Th e Catholic Sacrifice of the Mass,which is followed word for word by the people using the sameMissal as the priest upon the altar, is filled with Bible readingsfrom both the Old and New Testament. Th e "Judge's" viciousignorance leads us to ask where he thought the Bible was beforehe was born.INSULT TO CHARITABLE WOMEN

    Th e lowest point reached by the "'Judge" in his denuncia-tion of Catholics and Pr ote stan ts and Jews, is found on page244 of his book entit led "Riches." Both Prot estant s an d Cath-olics ar e acquainted wi th t he sacrificial lives of Catholic Nuns.Possessing nothing of this world's goods, Catholic Sisters teachin Catholic Schools so that, c ontrary t o the charge of th e"Judge," Catholic boys and girls may become educated and in-telligent. Some Catholic Orde rs of Nuns devote themselves tothe arduous task of n ursing the sick poor in their homes.Catholic Nursing Sisters of t he Poor give their services, with-out remuneration, to Catholic, Prot esta nt and Jew alike. Noquestion of race or color or religion is ever asked.28

    Israelites who conspired to kill Jeremiah and not the religiousIsraelites. Furthe rmore , the "Judge" offers no proof of thedasta rdly charge of homicide which he has made against Jewsand Protestants and Catholics. If the "Judge" has any knowl-edge of any homicidal conspiracy against his Witnesses, heshould present this information to the District Att orney of t heCounty wherein the "Judge" claims the conspiracy to exist.Otherwi se, the "Judge" should apologize and keep quiet.

    Sometimes these Catholic Orde rs of Nuns find it necessaryto beg for that which is necessary to keep up their work forGod and humanity. From time to time Catholic Sisters mayvisit office buildings and solicit charity. Onlya small part of this evidence could be presented in a pamphletof this size. An investigation of the writ ings of the "Judge"will result in a complete verification of the evidence we haveliad the space to present, and in a discovery of much more evi-tleilce for which the size of this pamphlet is too small.
