FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

3 May 2020

God Alone! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Often in the Easter Season, the Church will read from the Book of Revelation during the sacred Lit-urgy. At the beginning of this last book of the Bi-ble, there are seven letters addressed to the seven Churches of God which both praise them but also challenge and warn them about certain aspects of their life which have crept in and hindered their following of Christ. Both these letters and the writ-ings of some of the masters on the spiritual life will help us to understand more fully the consequenc-es of lukewarmness in our lives and how the risen Christ is calling us to a return to a more fervent love of Him for the sake of the world. In the first Letter to the Church at Ephesus, the author of the Book of Revelation reports the Lord’s words to the Church: “I know your works, your labor, and your endurance, and that you can-not tolerate the wicked…moreover, you have en-

durance and have suffered for my name, and you have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: you have lost the love you had at first” (Rev. 2: 2a, 3-4). The Lord praises the Christians of this Church for their endur-ance of persecution for His name, but their love for God has grown cold. What is the Lord referring to in this letter? St. Frances de Sales sheds some light on our Lord’s words, “He does not say that [the Church] was without charity, but only that it was not such as in the beginning; that is, that it was now not prompt, fervent, growing in love, or fruitful.” In the spiritual life, it is not enough simply to persevere in a state of grace, but rather we must constant-ly work on our faults and not allow even venial sin to become habitual in our daily lives. As one commentary on this passage of the Book of Revelation states, “to avoid this danger, to which all of us are prone, we need to be watchful and correct ourselves every day and return again and again to God our Father. Love of God, charity, should never be allowed to die down; it should always be kept ardent; it should always be growing (The Navarre Bible: Revelation, 38). In some way we could compare our relationship to God as with a relation-ship between a husband and wife. Let us say there are no major obstacles in their relationship which would destroy their marriage, but they have placed their relationship on auto-pilot and small things have begun to creep in that are allowing their love for another to grow tepid. In the same manner it can be very easy to allow mediocrity to creep into our souls and lessen our love for God and this can happen in the most subtle of ways. For example, do we live our Christian faith simply out of convenience or a sense of obligation or do we seek to love God more fully and make Him the first priority in everything we do? As St. Josemaria Escriva writes in Christ is Passing By, “We cannot take it easy. Our Lord wants us to strive harder, on a broader front, more in-tensely each day. We have an obligation to outdo ourselves, for in this competition the only goal is to reach the glory of heaven. If we do not get there, the whole thing will have been useless.” Even the saints themselves had to learn not to be satisfied with mediocrity. St. Theresa of Avila, after twenty years in Carmel, experienced what she would call her second conversion. Although she was living the Carmelite life of a religious, there were many things that kept her love for God from what it should have been. As she herself reflected on her own life: “When I was experiencing the enjoyments of the world, I felt sorrow when I recalled what I owed to God. When I was with God, the attachments of this world disturbed me. This was a war so troublesome that I am amazed that I endured it for a month let alone for so many years …. I hold that love, where present, cannot possibly be content with remaining always the same.” In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Michael

SAINT KATHRYN RELIGIOUS GOODS St. Catherine of Sienna: Mystic of Fire, Preacher of Freedom and Catholicism - The Pivotal Players. These are two of the absolute newest publications that the Religious Goods store has received this past week. Even though we are not able to interact with our customers on a daily basis (which we all miss!) we are still getting release notices from all of our vendors for both books and products. We have been judiciously buying some of both. This book and DVD come on the eve of the feast of our patron saint. They are both published by Word on Fire and Bishop Barron. If you used any of the Lenten companions that were available during Lent then you know how great Bishop Barron is. The book is written by Paul Murray, a Dominican friar living in Rome and teaching at the Angelicum University. He writes that St. Catherine is one of the most intriguing and explosive saints in church his-tory. She was intense in her mystical experiences, was an inspiring preacher, and was a scathing critic of corrupt political and ecclesial authorities. But she also had a preoccupation with freedom as it relates to our bondage to sin. It is this preoccupa-tion and “fire” that literally inflames her writings. We have sets of the two item set in the store. We are hoping to be able to offer them and all our oth-er items to all of you soon in person! For now, to reserve a copy of the book or DVD, please call us at 603.595.4GOD (4463).

ANNOUNCEMENT OF WEDDING

Bann I

Thomas Laste and Patricia Flynn are to be married at Saint Kathryn Church, Hudson,

NH on May 30, 2020.

THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION When unable

to receive Jesus sacramentally in the Eucharist, a Spiritual Communion can be made: My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE END TO

THE PANDEMIC O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
