Key Stage 4 Introduction

In this booklet you have information about what you need for subjects at the start of Year 10. This means

you should have all the resources ready on the first day back in September. There is also information on

key words and useful websites that you can look at over the summer holidays and have for reference

throughout Years 10 and 11.

The school may be able to offer financial support if you have been identified as eligible for pupil

premium. If you wish to apply for support to fund these resources, please ask a parent/carer to contact

the Finance Office; all such applications are dealt with in confidence.

As Head of Art & Photography, I am proud of the fantastic range of skills we are able to nurture and

develop through our subject. I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy both the experiences and outcomes

that are generated as a result of studying a range of experiences in drawing, painting, print-making,

photography, 3D, textiles, ceramics and graphics.

As you can imagine the materials and equipment needed to provide these opportunities can be quite

expensive, as we wish to give all students’ equality of access to the projects in Year 10 and 11.

To help the school cover the cost of the materials in such a broad subject, we would therefore ask that

you consider buying your daughter the following:

Resources Essential for Fine Art and Graphic Communications:

A3 or A2 size folder and A3 or A2 size plastic wallets

A range of drawing pencils (2H, HB, 2B and 6B)

Pens – including a biro and a fine liner

Coloured pencils (usually the more expensive

the better they are for blending)

Watercolour and acrylic starter set

Glue stick

Paint brushes (Fine ones for detail water colour)

Scissors

USB/memory stick for storing photographs

from photo shoots done at home

Preferably: Buy the Stroud High Art Equipment Tool Box

This year Stroud High School is pleased to offer an optional service of supplying an ART EQUIPMENT

TOOL BOX for GCSE students to use in their art lessons and at home. The cost of each pack will be

£25.00; packs will be put together and distributed to pupils in September. This will save time in finding all

of the required items and will benefit all students over the coming couple of years. The pack will contain

the following items in a Tool Box:

Resources Essential for Photography:

USB/Memory stick for storing photographs, use of a DSLR camera and a good mobile phone camera

would be useful.

If you have any questions or difficulties with this please do not hesitate to contact me –

[email protected].

Make sure that you have the following with you for your first lesson in September:

A4 ring binder.

A4 lined paper.

Highlighter pens.

A4 folder dividers.

Reading/text book list:

If you can, please buy a copy of the course textbook OCR GCSE (9-1) Business, Third

Edition by Alan Williams and Mike Schofield. It is widely available online and retails

between £20 and £25. This isn’t essential as we have a set in department for use in

lessons. In September, you will have the option to buy two year access to the eBook

version through school for approximately £10 (price to be confirmed).

Business at GCSE is full of key terms you may never have heard of before. Therefore, a

business dictionary is really helpful, similar to those you would use in English and MFL.

We recommend the book below which can be purchased new or second hand at a

reasonable price:

A-Z Business Studies Handbook by Barry Martin, David Lines, Ian Marcouse (Paperback

2009)

An excellent way to help you prepare for the course is by using GCSE BBC Bitesize. There are some

helpful resources here giving you an overview of business. There are also some short video clips

featuring real business case studies and scenarios. There is also a link to a Business education website

which has lots of support on each of the topics covered on the course.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/examspecs/zhrphbk

https://www.businessed.co.uk/index.php/home/theory/gcse/ocr-gcse-9-1-public

You should take an interest in what is happening in the news. This could be reading websites such as the

BBC business section, watching the news on the television or reading the newspaper. There are some

web links below to help you. The final link is about young entrepreneurs, one of the first topics you will

cover on the course!
