Developing Understanding of Fractions (3 - 5+):

Teaching fractions is one of the most difficult challenges

teachers face. As these skills are revisited every year, students

of all ages “still don’t get it!” and are unable to perform the

simplest operations with fractions. The new Common Core

Standards stress a conceptual understanding of fractions prior

to comparing and computing fractions. This workshop

provides teachers with strategies for helping students make

sense of fractions and operations with fractions, beginning

with the new third grade fraction standards. Participants will

leave with a classroom set of materials, power points, and

handouts to implement these strategies with students.

9:00am - 11:45amProportionally Speaking (Grades 6+)

Successful Algebra students have made the transition fromadditive to multiplicative thinking, and ProportionalReasoning is the foundational skill that makes that transitionpossible. (The centrality of this logic is evident in the emphasiswithin the Common Core Standards: Ratio and Proportionideas are the first standard in both the sixth and seventh grades.)Our mission for this two-day workshop is to help ALL studentsunderstand and apply proportional reasoning strategies.

In the past we have tried to teach proportional reasoning in anisolated “unit”. This approach does not do justice to theoverarching power of proportional reasoning across all of thecommon core strands. Participants will be provided with avariety of experiences to share with students throughout themath curriculum, and will leave with a classroom set ofmaterials, power points, and handouts to effectively implementproportional reasoning strategies.

Common Core Math Standards

(Content and Practice)

Making Math Magic focuses on a four step process to develop trueconceptual understanding in mathematics: Build It, Draw It, Write It,and Say It Throughout. The Standards for Mathematical Practice areimbedded in the four steps as our experiences and activities givestudents opportunities to be kinesthetically involved in a model of theconcept(s), before they attempt to create and explain a mental image.Problems are given in context, and students develop strategies fortransitioning from 3-D (concrete) to 2-D representations. As a result, they see the symbolic representation as a natural next step inexpressing relationships of numbers and related operations. Throughstrategic questioning, sharing ideas, playing games, and encouragingmath talk, students are given ample opportunities to justify theirreasoning and critique the reasoning of others as they build onunderstanding of the content.
