This past week Pope Francis met with members of Italy’s National Association of Elderly Workers which brings together older professionals who still want to contribute to society with their skills and experience. Meeting to mark the 70th anniversary of their foundation, Pope Francis focused on ageing in terms two seasons: the season of gift, and the season of dialogue.
The Season Of Gift The Pope stressed the contribution of the elderly to voluntary activities and caring for others in need. “Volunteering is an experience that is good for both the recipient and the person doing it”, he said. “Commitment to others can counteract the perception of loneliness, improve cognitive performance and increase mental well-being”. Engaging in volunteering promotes what is called "active ageing", said Pope Francis. It allows the elderly to be protagonists “in the construction of a community of solidarity”. He identified the biggest challenge for society in the coming years as being that of promoting “the human resources that older people bring to the community with increasing effectiveness”. This means activating solidarity networks, he said, and considering the aged as “bearers of dreams”. The dreams of the elderly are imbued with memory, said Pope Francis, “and therefore fundamental for the journey of the young”.
The Season Of Dialogue Old age is “the season of dialogue”, said the Pope, because it “presupposes a dialogue and an encounter between the elderly and the young in order to build a society that is more just, more beautiful, more supportive, more Christian”. Old age is a time of grace, he continued, in which the Lord renews His call to us: “He calls us to preserve and pass on our faith, to pray, to intercede, to be close to those in need”. The elderly, especially grandparents, “have a unique and special ability to grasp the most problematic situations,” continued Pope Francis, “and their prayer is powerful.” They are entrusted with the great task of transmitting “the experience of life, the history of a family, a community, a people”. “If grandparents do not talk to their grandchildren, there will be no future”, the Pope added. “Living old age as the season of gift and the season of dialogue”, said Pope Francis, contradicts the stereotype of the elderly as “sick, disabled, dependent, alone, and afraid”. Instead, it emphasizes “the resources and potential of the elderly”. Too often the elderly are discarded in the name of maintaining a "balanced" economic system, “at the center of which there is not the human person, but money”, said the Pope. “We are all called to counter this poisonous culture of waste”, concluded Pope Francis. We are called to build a more welcoming, more human, more inclusive society, “which does not need to discard those who are weak in body and mind”, but that moves “in step” with them.

Sacrificial Giving Annual Renewal
This year our Stewardship & Administration Commission has strongly recommended placing renewed emphasis on giving online or through automatic bank drafts. These methods allow everyone the opportunity to get the full benefits that come from tithing whether or not they are actually able to be in our church every Sunday. Think about it.

Sunday, Jan 5th at 10:30 am in the McConnell room
Do you have a child attending discipleship formation classes? Do you use the nursery? Do you want to be able to work with the youth of our parish? We are always looking for parents or other volunteers who can help with classes, lead small groups with the youth, chaperone youth events or volunteer in the nursery. A principal requirement for any of these services is certification through the safe environment program. The training is short and to the point. Hope you can participate.
ALPHA RETREAT DAY
For Middle Schoolers & Parents
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 29TH
1:15 PM IN JOYCE CENTER
This was originally scheduled for January 5th but that
is the date on which we will be preparing the Joyce
Center for the Little Christmas Dinner Dance. If we
pushed it forward to January 12th, four weeks would
have passed between sessions which would have
interrupted our momentum. We are very aware that
the children are on Christmas break from school, but
also aware that Sundays are still to be kept Holy. The
Dec. 29th retreat will begin with a full meal. There will
be two videos and an extended time for prayer. The
retreat time will end before 4pm. May we ask that you
adjust your calendars accordingly. Thanks so much
for any changes you may have to make to
accommodate this important event.
The Jesse Tree -4th WEEK OF ADVENT SATURDAY In the Beginning Was the Word When we celebrate Mass on Christmas, the Gospel readings change depending on
the time of the Mass. For the Christmas Vigil Mass on the evening of December
24, the reading is from the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 1:1-25), beginning with
the genealogy tracing Jesus’ ancestry in the Old Testament and ending with the
revelation to Joseph. For Midnight Mass and the Mass at Dawn, the traditional
readings are from the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2:1-20). At the Mass for Christmas day,
the reading is from John 1:1-34. In the first readings the narrative carries us along
into the mystery of Jesus’ birth. The text from John calls us to meditate on the
meaning of the stories we have heard. “In the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). When we are reflecting on
Jesus Christ, we are reflecting on God, and through him has come all life (John
1:3-4). In Jesus, God has become one of us, made his dwelling among us, pitched
his tent in our midst. When we enter into relationship with Jesus Christ, we enter
into the heart of God. When we share the love Jesus has won for us, we share the
heart of God with one another. The wonder of Christmas reflects this for us and is
the gift we bring for one another.
