OUTSTANDING SPEAKER & AUTHOR IN HOISINGTON: OUTSTANDING SPEAKER & AUTHOR IN HOISINGTON: OUTSTANDING SPEAKER & AUTHOR IN HOISINGTON: OUTSTANDING SPEAKER & AUTHOR IN HOISINGTON: Everyone’s in- vited to come hear Ward Foley, speaker & author of Scarman speak at the Hoisington High School on Sunday, Feb. 24th at 3:00pm. There is no admission fee & refreshments will be served. Ward was born with multiple birth defects, was severely injured by a drunk driver, beaten by troubled teens he was trying to help, and plunging his hands into a 400 degree fryer. Foley could have be- come embittered, but he is anything but a bitter man. He focuses on what he can do, not what he can’t do. His natural wit & humor helped him in school deal with being different and not always being accepted by his peers. This, along with his life story, is what made this book, Scarman and lectures both touching and inspirational. After raising his family, Foley increased the volunteer work he’d been doing & found a very special place in his heart for hospice patients. While speaking & writing about hospice may at first sound gloomy to some, the fact that Ward can sit with a hospice patient is one of the greatest blessing of his life. The stories he tells are touching, inspiring, heartwarming, funny, surprising and heart- wrenching. As the author talks about the many “God moments” where time after time amazing things happen, he doesn’t try to convince the reader to interpret it as he does. He doesn’t talk about what he gives to others; he talks about what others give to him. To me, that is the very foundation of a truly inspirational story. ATTENTION LADIESATTENTION LADIESATTENTION LADIESATTENTION LADIES: It has been brought to our attention that as it

states in the Altar Society handbook, the Co-Chairpersons will either need to lead the ro-sary at the vigil of a deceased member or call someone to do it for them. Joan Rziha has agreed to remind the co-chairpersons of this when she calls you to let you know you will need to call for cakes & salads for funeral din-ners. (Thanks, Joan!) We have for too long, been depending on just a few ladies of our parish to take on this re-sponsibility but now this change needs to be made. We all, as members of the Altar Soci-ety, are to sit together when attending a vigil to pray the rosary together for our fellow

member who has passed. And just a reminder, all women 18 years of age & older are automati-cally members of the Altar Society.

MASS OBGLIGATIONMASS OBGLIGATIONMASS OBGLIGATIONMASS OBGLIGATION: The late John Paul II reminded Roman Catholics of their duty to attend Sunday Mass weekly & implored them not to let weekend pursuits get in the way of their spiritual obligations. Years ago, the late Pope wrote in an apostolic letter to clergy & faithful addressing declining church attendance among the world’s 1 billion Catholics, the Pope said the “holiness of the Lord’s day” must be protected at all costs. He reaffirmed Catholic law that it is a “grave sin” if Catholics skip Sunday Mass deliberately and without legitimate reason. The 100-page letter, titled “Dies Domini” (The Day of the Lord) explored what John Paul de-scribed as “the custom of the weekend… a weekly period of respite, spent perhaps far from home & often involving participation in cultural, political or sporting activities which are usu-ally held on free days. While he did not say that Catholics should refrain from seeking relaxa-tion & diversion during the weekend, he explicitly stated that they include time for religion. “If after six days of work—reduced in fact to five for many people—people look for time to re-lax and pay more attention to other aspects of their lives, this corresponds to an authentic need which is in full harmony with the vision of the Gospel message,” the pope wrote. “In any case, they are obliged in conscience to arrange their Sunday rest in a way which allows them to take part in the Eucharist, refraining from work and activities which are incompatible with the sancti-fication of the Lord’s Day.” John Paul—who cited the Bible’s creation story, canon law & philosophers in his contemplative letter on the Sabbath—said he wrote the document because of declining church attendance, which he blamed in part on a “declining spirit of faith.” Statistics from Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estevez, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship & Discipline of the Sacraments: 17% of Catholics in Austria attend Mass, while the figure in the city of Rome is 28%. In the U.S., studies show about 1/3 of the 60 mil-lion Catholics attend church weekly, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apos-tolate at Georgetown University. Medina said attendance in Latin American range from 6-10%, but added that these low figures reflect a shortage of priests in the region. John Paul said the Roman Catholic Church has made efforts to help Catholics fulfill their weekly obligation, such as allowing them to attend Mass on Saturday afternoon/evening and providing Masses throughout the day on Sunday. He said that radio & television broadcasts of Masses are useful for those unable to get to church, but are not acceptable as a regular substitute.
