    The SabbathInitial Words

Throughout His ministry, religiousleaders challenged Christs Sabbathobservance. When criticized, Christ

emphasized His authority as Lord ofthe Sabbath (Matt. 12:8, Mark 2:28,

Luke 6:5).He also showed what correct

observance of the Sabbath should be.

    1. Creator of the SabbathThe Origin

Christ, who was to be mansRedeemer, was also his Creator. Andright there, at the end of Creation

week, the Lord gave us a day of rest. The Sabbath was made for man, it

is the Lords day. It belongs toChrist.... By Him it was set apart as amemorial of the work of creation.

    1. Creator of the SabbathThe Origin

The same God who created humanitywith the need to rest also providedthe means to rest: a weekly day in

which to set aside weekly toils andtroubles and to rest in the Creator.

He Himself rested on the seventh day,not because of tiredness but in orderto bless and sanctify the Sabbath and

give us an example to follow.

    1. Creator of the SabbathThe Origin

And He also rested on Sabbath whenHe finished our Redemption on the

cross, not because He needed it but in

order to confirm the perpetual valueof the Sabbath.

Christ, who invites restless humanbeings to rest in Him (Matt. 11:28,29), invites us to rest in a special way,

once a week, every Sabbath day.

    2. Lord of the SabbathProblem at the Grainfield

The Problem was not the actionitself, but the day on which it wasdone. Rabbinical regulations

prohibited types of work on Sabbath, such as reaping, threshing, etc.

In the Phariseesopinion, by pluckingthe ears of grain and separating thegrain from the husks, the disciples

were guilty of doing all of them.

    2. Lord of the SabbathHis Answer: Two Examples

    1 Sam. 21:1

    6. Christ argued that, although in normal circumstancesDavid and his men should not have

eaten the bread meant for the priests(Lev. 24:9), yet because their lives

were in danger, their actions shouldbe considered a permissible violationof a ceremonial rule.

    2. Lord of the SabbathHis Answer: Two Examples

Matthew 12:5has to do with thesacrifices and offerings ordained forthe Sabbath day in the temple

service, which were twice as manyas those offered on any other day

(Num. 28:9, 10).The Jews themselves recognizedthat the temple service had priority

    over the Sabbath.

    2. Lord of the SabbathHis Answer: Two Statements

Mark 2:27. Jesus reaffirms theEdenic origin of the Sabbath andredefines the incorrect priorities of

the Pharisees regarding man and theSabbath: the Sabbath was created to

benefit human beings and continuesas a God-given gift at the service ofhumanity, instead of humanity at

    the service of the Sabbath.

    3. Model of Sabbath RestHis Attitude Toward the Sabbath

The word Luke used in verse 16,custom, comes from a Greek wordrelated to habits constant in time

and practice. In other words, Jesusregularly attended the synagogue

every Sabbath that He could.Luke specifically identifies the

Sabbath as the seventh day of the

    week (Luke 23:54

    24:1).

    3. Model of Sabbath RestMiracles on the Sabbath

Jesus carried out miraculoushealings on the Sabbath day. In most

cases, the healing came by Jesus

initiative, as if He purposely wantedto heal on the Sabbath, though Hecould have done it any other day.Jesus was trying to make a point:healing on the Sabbath was not

    unlawful.

Although it is true that we must setaside our own interests during theSabbath (Exod. 20:9, Isa. 58:13), it

should never be considered as aperiod of useless idleness.

Christ clearly pointed out that it islawful to do good on the Sabbath(Matt. 12:12, NKJV).

    3. Model of Sabbath RestMiracles on the Sabbath

Jesus taught that we should not belegalistic when observing the Sabbath. To keep it means to restfrom our

own works (Heb. 4:10) and, to stoptrying to work our way to salvation.

Satan wants to convince us to keep theSabbath selfishly. If he cannot move usagainst the Sabbath, he will try to push

us to the other extreme: legalism.

Christ intended for His Sabbath to bekept even after His resurrection.Christs words in Matthew 24:20 show

that in a.d. 70, about 40 years after Hisdeath, the Sabbath was to be

    The SabbathFinal Words

One Sabbath, after the synagogueservice, the Gentiles begged Paul topreach the gospel to them. The apostle

could have invited them the next day,Sunday, but he waited one week.

These provide powerful evidence thatthe early church knew nothing of thefirst day of the week as a replacement

    for the seventh
