Jesus came to serve others

SMALL GROUPS | 5 minutes

Break into small groups and personally connect with kids. Here are some questions to prompt conversation: What was the best or worst part of your week? What’s the funniest or saddest thing that happened this week?

● Video: 5 Minute Countdown Timer

LARGE GROUP | 15 minutes

● Video: 10 Second Countdown (1 minute)

SAY Welcome to kids’ Club, I’m so glad you’re here! We want Kids’ Club to be a fun, safe and welcoming place for everyone. To do that, let’s all commit to a few things! 1) Always show respect 2) Listen when others speak and 3) Have fun!

SAY Today we’re talking about a really cool story from the Bible when Jesus did something that seemed really strange at first–he got down on the floor, got a bowl of water, and washed his disciples’ muddy, gross, stinky feet!

SAY Let’s compare this to what it might be like today. Can you give me an example of someone really important and cool? (Let kids throw out some answers, than choose a recognizable one that kids will relate to.) Okay, imagine, that [insert name] came to your house, and did the most boring, awful chore that you can think of, like…. [insert chore]. Can you imagine what it would feel like to have THAT person treating YOU with such respect, instead of the other way around?

SAY That’s what this was like, and Jesus’ disciples were flabbergasted that he would serve them like that! But that’s what Jesus came here to do–he didn’t come to BE served, he came to SERVE us. So here’s today’s big idea.

● Slide: Jesus came to serve others

SAY Let’s check out a video to hear more about this story, and what it means for us.

● Video: Kids on the Move / Jesus Washes Feet (5 minutes)

SAY Jesus loves us so much, that he’s willing to get into our messy, imperfect lives and love us no matter who we are are what we do. It doesn’t matter if you’re a famous movie star, or an athlete, or the prince...you are worth everything to Jesus, and he wants to serve you. And the most amazing way he did that? He actually died for you.

RESPONSE TIME | 5 minutes

SAY Let’s look at a verse that was mentioned in the video. Can I have a volunteer read this out loud?

● Slide: Mark 10:45 Even Jesus did not come to be served. Instead, he came to serve others. He came to give his life as the price for setting many people free.

SAY Jesus did not come to be treated like an important king. He came to treat US like that. And that’s why he wants us to treat others the same way that he did. He wants us to love people just like he’s loved us.

SAY So what does that look like for us? How can we treat others the way that Jesus did? Is there someone you know that you could treat like this? Let’s check out a video and take some time to think about what that means in our regular, everyday lives.

● Video: Take a Minute / Serve (2 minutes)

SAY So….is there someone you know that you could treat like this? Is there someone who popped into your head when you were watching that video? Personally, I think I could…. [insert a personal example of someone you think you could serve and love better, and how you want to do that].

PRAY Jesus, we need your help to love others like you would love them. Please speak to us today about specific people that we can love and serve. Help us figure out how we can do it. We love you, and thank you for serving and loving us. Amen.

Mark 10:45 Even Jesus did not come to be served. Instead, he came to serve others. He came to give his life as the price for setting many people free.

PREPARE

● None

VIP...OR NOT? | 10 minutes

● Stay in one large group.

○ Video: 10-Minute Countdown Timer

● Prepare to play slides labeled #1 through #8 in the keynote presentation (directly after the “Take a Minute: Serve” video).

SAY Has anyone ever heard the term, “VIP”? It means Very Important Person, and refers to someone who is important and that we want to treat extra special. I’m going to show you two pictures, and you have to decide which person is the “VIP”, the most important person. If you choose the image on the right, then walk to the right side of the room. If you choose the image on the left, go to the left side of the room.

● Click to show each slide of the keynote presentation. On each slide is two images that kids will choose between (kind of like “Would You Rather”)

● If you want to make it extra fun or challenging, give kids special actions or motions to do as they travel from one side of the room to the other (like skipping, hopping on one foot, cartwheeling, crawling, walking backwards, etc).

● The twist of this activity is important. Once you’re finished, ask kids:

○ Who do you think Jesus would have chosen in this game?

○ Does Jesus think some people are more important than others? Why or why not?

○ We might consider Jesus to be the biggest VIP of all time, but did he act that way?

○ How has Jesus served you? How does he love you RIGHT NOW?

ACTIVITY 1 ACTIVITY 2 ACTIVITY 3LARGE GROUP

SUPPLIES

PREPARE

● Large sheet of tear off paper (1 per small group or table )● Piece of colored paper (3 per kid)● Markers● Scissors● Tape (1 roll per volunteer)

“WASHING” FEET | 10 minutes

● Split into small groups or stay in one large group.

○ Video: 10-Minute Countdown Timer.

● Prepare by taping a large sheet of tear off paper on the wall, or laying it on the ground (for each group)

SAY Jesus was the most amazing human who ever lived, AND he was God….yet HE washed his disciples feet! That was the job a servant would usually do, but NEVER a king or very important person! Yet Jesus did it. Let’s do an activity to remind us that Jesus thinks WE are worth being loved and respected no matter who we are.

● Have each kid find a partner. Let them take turns drawing an outline of their partner’s shoe on a piece of colored paper. They can take their shoe off if they’re really brave!

● Cut out the foot outline. Next, write their name on it, along with one way they want to serve someone this week. Tape it to the large tear off sheet on the wall.

● Let kids do this for three partners, and try to cover the whole tear off paper with “feet”! (There’s enough for each kid to use three pieces of colored paper).

AS KIDS WORK, DISCUSS

● What are some jobs or chores we might consider “beneath” us? Things we wouldn’t want to do?

● Are there some people that we think that WE are better than? Are people who think THEY are better than you? How does that feel when they treat you like that?

● What are some ways that we could serve the people around us? Think of your neighbors, friends, family and other people you know.

Page 6: 3rd-5th MARCH 7/8, 2020 · When someone tags the person who is it, everyone will freeze for two seconds. The person who did the tagging is now it and should use the two seconds everyone

ACTIVITY 1 ACTIVITY 2 ACTIVITY 3LARGE GROUP

SUPPLIES

PREPARE

● Card template (1 per kid)● Blank stickers (4 per kid)● Markers

● Split into small groups.

● Give each kid a card template, 4 blank stickers and markers.

AS KIDS WORK, DISCUSS

● Who’s someone who has shown you love and served you? Describe what they did.

● What if you decided to serve people you don’t even like or are mean to you? What would that be like? Would it be hard?

● Why do we sometimes treat people like they’re less important, or not cool?

SAY We’re going to serve and show someone love by writing them an encouraging note. Encouragement is a great way to serve people. It requires us to build people up by saying kind words to them.

● Tell kids to think of someone they want to put before themselves this week. Someone they can serve and encourage.

● Give each kid one card template and four blank stickers. Set out markers. Go through the first “madlib style” prompt below and have kids write their answer on a sticker, then stick it in the first blank of the template. Do with all four stickers and prompts. It will be more fun if they don’t look at the card beforehand, but they can if they want.

○ #1: Name of the person you’ll give this card to

○ #2: Describe what this person is to you (friend, mom, brother, teacher, etc)

○ #3: Write a positive adjective to describe this person

○ #4: Your name

EXTRA TIME?

Jesus taught us the opposite of what almost everyone else teaches us. It’s not just the richest, most skilled, most popular or best looking people who are important. EVERYONE is! Even those people that we think aren’t important at all. So we’re going to remind ourselves of that by playing a game opposite of the way it’s usually played...

● Designate one child to be “it” first. Instead of trying to tag other kids, the child who is “it” will try to avoid being tagged by everyone else.

● This is a walking tag game since we are inside and we want everyone to be safe.

● When someone tags the person who is it, everyone will freeze for two seconds. The person who did the tagging is now it and should use the two seconds everyone else is frozen to try to get away from the rest of the group.

● Give kids a maze or a word-search activity sheet.
