THE LIGHT POST

When "Kathy" was accepted into the BRM program,

it meant that she not only had a place to live, but

also that her 8-year-old son could be reunited with

her -- AFTER TWO YEARS APART!

Financial difficulties combined with Kathy’s health

condition had rendered them homeless two years

ago and living in their car.

Without access to needed medication, she was

hospitalized and her son was placed in foster care.

After she was released from the hospital, she

struggled to maintain her health so she could afford

stable housing, which was a condition of

reunification. “I knew having housing would be the

only way to get my son back,” she explained.

Her son’s foster family reached out to BRM

about availability. The foster care oversight

team shared that her acceptance into the BRM

program was a key factor in their decision to

move forward with the reunification.

Before coming to BRM, a single mother with three

children was living with her parents, working full time,

and paying outrageous daycare expenses that didn’t

allow her to save money for a place of her own.

“Since coming to BRM, I’ve been able to pay off debt,

set up an emergency fund and put money into savings.

It’s such a great feeling to get ahead.”

She has learned to create a monthly budget, pay her bills

on time and is excited to be saving for a deposit on her

own apartment.

During weekly case management meetings and financial

classes, the residents of BRM identify areas of

unnecessary spending and learn the importance of

paying bills on time to increase credit scores in

anticipation of renting. This spring, they are filing their

taxes and making a detailed plan for how they will

allocate money wisely from their returns.

“I’m finally able to lay the foundation for my family’s

future. There’s a light at the end of our tunnel.”

"I lived in 33 foster homes and 2 emergency

shelters as a child," explained a BRM mom at the recent annual Impact 100 Partner event.

"Homeless moms learn they're valuable and

loved," said Lief Johnson, BRM Board Chair. "Their current circumstances are not the

definition of who they are. God has a purpose

for their lives and their children's lives that go

far beyond their current circumstances.

Here, they are introduced to Hope!"
