COURSE DESCRIPTIONThe Pediatric Refresher Course provides an opportunity for health care providers to learn about new developments in the care of children and youth. Participants interact with pediatric experts on a wide variety of practical pediatric issues in a comfortable and supportive learning environment. Through large group lectures, small group case-based seminars and quick “practice changers”, participants discuss and apply new knowledge and skills and determine specific changes for their practice setting.
COURSE OBJECTIVES After attending this course, participants will be able to: • describe current issues in pediatric clinical practice. • identify and manage common and important medical problems in children and youth. • use up-to-date and evidence-based strategies to manage pediatric medical problems. 3. Back to Basics: Evaluation and Management of Thyroid and Growth Disorders

10. How to Identify and Manage Drug Allergies in Kids (Dr. L. Segal)
• Identify the key historical and physical examination features that rule in or rule out a drug allergy (with particular attention to antimicrobials) • Counsel parents effectively regarding a drug allergy in their child • Explain when allergy testing/referral to an Allergist/Immunologist may be helpful in the management of a child with a drug allergy
11. “15 minutes with the Experts” (4 specialists – Resp: Dr. S. Katz/GI: Dr. M. Boland/Neuro: Dr. H. McMillan/ID: Dr. J. Brophy) – ** limited to 16 registrants

• Interact with 4 pediatric subspecialists and have the opportunity to discuss challenging issues encountered in their practice
• Outline differential diagnoses, work-‐up or management of pediatric patients with a variety of presenting complaints.
• Describe referral processes and how to access pediatric subspecialty care if necessary
12. Intensive Behavioural Intervention for Autistic Children…While You Wait (Autism Program – Intensive Behavioural Intervention Team)
• Recommend and describe intensive behavioral interventions that parents can initiate at home while they await assessment by a formal autism/IBI program
13. Bruises, Bleeds, Bones, and Babies: What’s new in the radiology and clinical aspects of inflicted injury (Dr. M. Ward/Dr. M-‐A. Matzinger)
• Identify clinical and radiographic indicators of possible physical abuse in young children
• Initiate medical assessment and consultation for young children with possible physical abuse
