Chesapeake Cruising: The May Edition By Mike Pittinger, Cruising Chair

April bay sailing has seen the IRS Cruise to Pirates Cove and the Shakedown Cruise to the Corsica River come and go. Hopefully everyone knows that registration for a cruise opens approximately 6 weeks prior to the cruise date. Placement for a cruise via coordination is chronological, so if you want to sail, the easiest way to ensure getting a spot on a boat is to sign up early. VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

By the time you read this the SOS sailing season will have been underway for several weeks. The weather was perfect for the flare, fire extinguisher, and rope toss demonstrations at Camp Wabanna. It was followed by Dockside Day, where about 35 new members received Basic Skills instruction provided by seven SOS

skippers. The Happy Hour afterward allowed new members to mingle and meet more experienced members. (If you missed the Dockside day, there is another one scheduled for late July.) Two weekend cruises and two Day Sails will have also taken place. More boats are getting into the water every day and are ready to sail. Mine is scheduled to launch on April 30; I have my fingers crossed that it will actually get into the water that day. The DNR Cruise and Party on May 16 and 17 is the first major event of the season, where you can sail-in or drive-in. DNR, which stands for Maryland. Department of Natural Resources, is a lovely park located on Granary Creek off the Wye River on the Eastern Shore - about a 40-minute drive from Annapolis. Later in the month is the nine-day extended cruise to the St. Mary’s River just inside the mouth of the Potomac. This is a great opportunity to stretch our sailing legs and explore beyond the usual bounds of a two- or three-day weekend cruise. Please note that there have been some changes to the sailing schedule in June: • June 20-21 will be Day Sails • June 26-27 will be the First Mates Cruise. This is a skills

development cruise for First Mates and Skippers only. None of the SOS activities happen without members arranging them. Special kudos this month go to Joe Lombardo for arranging for the After Spring Training Party held at his community’s club house and to Marge Stembel and Bob Lucas of the Social Committee handling set up, decorations, food, band and clean up. Many thanks to the Cruising Committee, which held its annual sailing season kick-off meeting and lunch with the assistance of Irene Aronian, Debbie Goldberg, Kelly Kelley, Carol Neiman and Harry Keith. Much appreciation also goes to George and Shirley Hollendursky for opening their home and building the fire for the annual Sock Burning and to Cindy Turner and Barbara Shoemaker for providing the food and beverages. See you on the water, See you on the water, Hope

Commodore: Future Board Meetings will be held at Greenbrier Community Center on May 7, June 4, July 9, Aug 6, Sept 3, Oct 1, Nov 5 and Dec 3. Vice Commodore: Motion made and passed to accept Mike Pittinger as Cruising Chair. Treasurer: The Financial Review has begun. Insurance is due and is 3% higher this year. Financially we are a little behind where we were last year due club membership being down, Spring Training making a lower profit, and the Awards Party ran over-budget. Bareboat: . The winter cruise to the BVIs will be coordinated by Rita Svek with Marge Stembel. A fall cruise to a Mediterranean location will be coordinated by Alex Daley. The July/August Schooner and Bareboat trip to Maine still have a few openings. Brunches: Recommend only three Brunches next year and combine Awards Banquet with a Brunch. Cruising: Refunds and Cruise accountability will remain with Peggy Green until new Chair becomes more familiar with the mechanics of the actual process. The Extended Spring Cruise is being finalized and details will be in May Whisker Pole. Database: Rob King has been enlisted as an intern to learn the tasks and responsibilities of the Database chair. Members have been trying to register for events from the public-facing calendar. They will now be directed to the log-in page to complete their registration. Education: No report. First Mates: May 9 will be First Mates Meeting. June 26-27 will be First Mates Sail with Dean Collins coordinating. Revised First Mate Chair Description has been submitted for Board Approval. Membership Recruitment: No report Membership Retention: Two new Skippers have joined SOS. New Member packets have been sent to 21 members who joined in March. Newsletter: Ninety-five copies of the April 16-page Whisker Pole were mailed to 76 members and 19 issues to Happy Hour coordinators at a cost of $340.71 or $3.59 per issue. Safety: Boats have been activated. Arrangements and volunteers are in place for Flare and Safety demo.. Skippers Advisory: Dave Henkin will coordinate the Skipper Mentor Program. George Hollendursky will coordinate Raft Captains and provide additional training as needed. Dane Skagen and Joe Lombardo will coordinate the Racing Program. A Quarterly Skipper Newsletter has been launched. Social: Plans are being coordinated with Cruising Committee to have a Halloween Cruise and Party at Miles River Yacht Club on October 31-November 1. Plans for DNR Hawaiian Party are complete. Ad Hoc: No report.

(Chesapeake Cruising Continued from Page 1) The Spring Extended Cruise starts with the Memorial Day Cruise May 23rd and continues till the end of the Spring Flowers Cruise on May 31st

. We will be cruising the western shore of the Chesapeake and into the Potomac River. The extended will provide a chance to explore new cruising areas and ultimately end up with a visit to St. Mary’s City on the St. Mary’s River. We have tried to keep each leg at or under 30 NM so all boats can enjoy the extended cruise.

The first evening is with the SOS Memorial Day Cruise in the Choptank River. Sunday Night will be in the little Choptank allowing northern-based boats to “catch-up” prior to some long reach sailing to Solomons Island. Monday night in Solomons Island has all the services anyone could need to extend the cruise, fuel, water, provisions, pump outs and it is a great walking town or have a cool drink at the Tiki Hut bar a favorite local hangout. Tuesday night

finds the Cruise in the Potomac on Jutland creek at the Corinthian Yacht Club, www.cycchesapeake.com/

or one of the nearby marinas for the first of a two-night stay. So its relaxation and fun at Corinthian Yacht club has to offer. Some very good local restaurant and fuel / amenities are also available. Wednesday is either a day sail to St. Mary’s or possible bus transportation into town. The afternoon and evening will be highlighted with “Dutch” dinner at one of the local waterside restaurants or a possible BBQ right at the Yacht Club. Thursday is a return sail back to Solomons Island, and quiet anchorage after a bit of long reach sailing in the southern bay. Friday is a weather day on the schedule but seems like a good day to relax and explore the Solomons Island history and town. Saturday finds the extended cruisers sailing north to the Choptank River and joining the Spring Flowers Cruise at Dunn Cove. Sunday the extended cruisers wander back to homeports with 9 days of exploring new sailing areas and great memories of to start the summer season.

Closing out the month of May is the Spring Flowers Cruise to Dunn Cove on the Choptank May 30th and 31st

. The Extended Cruise will join the weekend cruise.

Days sails galore during May are also with scheduled events on the on the weekend of May 9th and 10th, Wednesday the 13th, Tuesday the 19th, and finally Thursday the 28

REGIONAL PRE-THANKSGIVING and NEW REGIONAL NEW YEARS PARTIES

It seems early to promote these events, but it really isn’t. For those of you who are new, SOS sponsors regional dinners the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The parties are held in various locations hosted by

members who open their homes, provide the turkey and beverages and

invite members to come to dinner. Guests contribute a small donation to cover expenses and bring a dish. This year the Social Committee is innovating a similar second holiday event and wants to see if there is any interest out there. We are looking for volunteers to host regional evening parties to ring in the New Year where folks can gather closer to home and reduce time on the highway. If the host chooses to lend the floor for a P.J.Party, that would be within the realm of possibility but entirely up to the host. The goal

For both events, the host determines how many guests will be accommodated. Kitty St. Romain has coordinated the pre-Thanksgiving party for several years and will coordinate both the New Years Parties and the Thanksgiving Parties this year. If you are interested in hosting one or both of these evenings, please email Kitty at: [email protected]. You are the key to success in generating great gatherings. PLEASE VOLUNTEER. IT IS REALLY A GREAT WAY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE CLUB, ESPECIALLY IF YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO BE ON A COMMITTEE BUT CAN TAKE ON A SINGLE SMALLER EVENT.

A Tip from our Galley Gourmet

Chocolate Mousse Ingredients

9 egg yolks 6 egg whites, stiffly beaten 2 Tbsp rum, cognac or whiskey 8 Tbsp sugar 8 oz unsalted butter ½ tsp vanilla extract 8 oz bittersweet chocolate whipped cream At home

1. Cut chocolate in small pieces and dissolve together with butter in a double boiler. Remove from heat.

2. Beat egg yolks until creamy and double in volume (do not under beat). 3. Add sugar and continue beating until it’s a perfect cream. 4. When completed, add liquor and the still warm chocolate butter mixture and keep beating

continuously. 5. Add the very stiffly beaten egg whites. 6. Again, stir continuously until well blended. 7. Pour into a transportable container (Tupperware bowl with a lid). 8. Chill well. On board Serve in separate dishes topped with whipped cream. Can be made 1-2 days ahead of time and will keep very nicely. The most important thing in this recipe is to beat the mixtures thoroughly! Travel and Adventure

Ann Vlot, Matt Green, Joan and Peter Stogis and friends got tired of the cold and snow and spent the last week in March in Guadeloupe. Excellent sailing, good snorkeling, French culture and inexpensive French wine! Moorings abandoned Guadeloupe some years ago and they chartered from the newcomer Dream Yacht Charters. It was a positive experience. In April Robin Meigel enjoyed a tour of the Domino Sugar refinery sponsored by the Pride of Baltimore and got closer to the sign than sailors ordinarily enjoy!

Robin Meigel on yet another adventure!

Milestones and Celebrations Congratulations to John Murray, Peter Wilde, Al Graziano, John Dombach and Ian Sanderson for completing the ASA Certification Clinic. They now have "licenses" that meet the new chartering requirements for Mediterranean and other countries.
