DETROIT — Lithium ion batterymaker EnerDel Inc. and one of itsbackers is conducting trials in Japanaimed at giving electric-car batteriesa second life providing storage on thepower grid.

“That’s the single fastest way tobring down the cost of cell production— not by beating up on suppliers butfinding a residual value so that theconsumer only bears 20 to 30 percentof the cost of the battery,” said CharlesGassenheimer, CEO of EnerDel’s par-ent, Ener1 Inc., of New York.

EnerDel is partnering with the realestate arm of the Japanese tradinghouse Itochu Corp. to develop andproduce the battery systems for a res-idential smart-grid energy storageproject to be installed in an apart-ment building near Tokyo.

After a battery pack has reached theend of its useful life in a vehicle, itwould be used in a residential settingto store excess power — for example, electricity generated at night, to beused during peak-demand periods. That would split the lifetime cost ofthe batteries between the vehicleowner and the utility or other entitythat reuses those batteries.

Itochu Property Development Ltd.began selling units in a five-storyapartment building last month, withthe first move-ins scheduled for early2011. The real estate developer aimsto include secondary-use lithium ionbatteries for distributed grid storagein one-fifth of its future buildings.

Itochu has been an investor in pri-vately held Ener1 since 2003.
