Need answers to your mobility questions?? Want to know the latest in Assistive

Technology? Would you like to learn money saving tips on how to purchase your next van, scooter or lift? Get these answers and more from “The Mobile Lifestyle Advisor” brought to you by Disabled Dealer of Virginia and West Virginia. This monthly column might make you roll with laughter, cringe with fear, or jump for joy, but it guarantees to produce solutions that you can take to the bank. So “Let’s Get Rolling”.

Q. I received a very peculiar email response to the ad I ran in this magazine to sell my mother’s van. The purchaser wanted to buy the van sight unseen, pay by cashier’s check and have a shipping company pick it up from my house. I am to pay the shipping cost to the shipping company when they arrive. They even included a $15.00 TIP for me if I can act within 2 days. Is this a common way of selling vans on the internet?? Mary S.-VA.

A. DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL! I can assure you it is a scam, (I sound like Clark Howard, don’t I?). Never sell a van over the internet by cashier’s check or money wire unless you meet the buyer in person and/or have talked to them by phone. I have heard too many stories about scam artist working the internet thru EBAY, Craigslist and sites such as ours at www.disableddealer.com. Buyers and Sellers should be aware; evil lurks out there in the world of internet transactions. More and more I have found that unless you are savvy and have selling experience with cars, you should seek out dealers that specialize in consignment sales and turn over the process to them. It may cost you 20% of the retail selling price, however, you are guaranteed your money and do not have to worry about getting flimflammed.

For those readers that would like my “6 Tips of Common Internet Buying and Selling Scams”, drop me an email and I will get it out to you.

Q. I have a 2004 Honda Odyssey, I have been loading my power chair with a set of ramps and just cannot do it anymore. After calling around to several Mobility Dealers, I have become very confused by the different opinions I have received regarding whether or not I could get a lift installed that will carry my wheelchair. The chair is a power wheelchair, with a height of 37” to the top of the canes. What suggestions do you have? Ginny M.-VA.

A. I will need to make some assumptions before giving you any advice. First, I will assume that you can ambulate from the back of the van to the front seat and that you are only attempting to load an empty power chair into the van. With these assumptions in mind

let’s look at several options; First, I would look at the side entry VS-900 made by Bruno, a popular lift for chairs of that size but only if you are willing to give up the mid row seats in your van. The lift can be installed so you can load from the driver side of the van, eliminating steps to get into the van. Of all options this may be the best. Second, look at the many outside rear lifts or carriers that are on the market. It will require a hitch installation but this option will NOT take up any room inside the van. Lastly, if you can give up the use of your rear seats look at the many inside platform lifts that are designed for minivans. It is important to note that EACH of these lift styles will work but only if your chair can fit the platform or squeeze thru the door or hatch opening. If your chair is too tall then you may need to look at adapting the canes to gain a few inches.

Here is a list of the best widgets that can make driving safer for those of you who need a little help. Most of these modifications DO NOT need a driver evaluator assessment; it would be advantageous however for you to consult your Mobility Dealer and try out these items before purchasing them:

The HandyBar- Insert this handle into the car door striker (the U shaped hook that the door locks on when closed) and presto you have another grab point to help in getting out of the seat. Works great on driver or passenger side van. Back up alarms and cameras- These systems are now wireless and provide great peace of mind for individuals who have limited ability to turn their head while backing up the vehicle. Most new cars have cameras and later model cars have back up beeper warnings, but if your car does not, this is a great little add on. Many of the kits can be installed in less than an hour for the low cost units. Panoramic Mirrors-Replaces the existing mirror with a wide view panoramic mirror which can show you surrounding blind spots on both sides of the car. Slide-n-GO- Great little portable device which makes for easy entry and exit into a front seat either driver or passenger. It is light weight and made of heavy plastic and consists of a padded disc that swivels in a circular motion while also sliding left to right. If you do not have leather or vinyl seat covers, this little device makes quick work with transferring into a vehicle. Ergonomic key grip- there are many styles of key grips that make it much easier to 1) insert your key and 2) provide extra leverage in order to twist the key to start a vehicle. While not made for every vehicle key style on the market, you can find one for the most common vehicles.

M.I.T.S. of VA., WAYNESBORO, VA. March 9, 2012-Last month at the 21st Annual NMEDA Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association announced National Mobility Awareness Month, which will be celebrated throughout the U.S. and Canada in May 2012. The goal of the awareness month is to teach seniors, veterans and people with disabilities how to live an active, mobile lifestyle through the use of wheelchair accessible vehicles and adaptive mobility equipment.

In celebration of the awareness month, NMEDA has also created an online contest that will award three lucky winners customized wheelchair accessible vehicles to meet their needs. In support of the awareness month, sponsors such as Toyota, SanTan Honda in Chandler, AZ and Chrysler, have rallied together to provide the vehicles, which will later be customized by NMEDA manufactures –Braun Ability, Vantage Mobility International and Bruno Independent Living Aids.

Those eligible to win the wheelchair accessible vehicles are distinguished as Local Heroes, who will be encouraged to submit either written or videotaped stories of how they’ve overcome or struggled with mobility issues. Caregivers, friends and family member are also welcome to submit entries for others. Stories will be accepted on MobilityAwarenessMonth.com from March 18, 2012 to May 13, 2012 and voting will take place from April 1, 2012 to May 13, 2012.
