Thanks To All Those That Have DonatedThe 2011/12 41 Club President Vaughan

Harris and Round Table National President John Payne took the opportunity to present a joint cheque to Round Table Children’s Wish at the recent 41 Club President’s Ball.

Both Presidents had selected RTCW as their charity for the year, and they are seen here presenting a combined cheque for £80,000 to RTCW chairman Kevin Toon, who is also member of Bournemouth. (No 5) 41 Club.

Thanks to your generosity RTCW was able to make many children’s wishes come true in the last 12 months. There will be a selection of those wishes in the July Links magazine.

Subsequent to the Conference the final amount raised has risen in excess of this figure.

Once again many thanks to all who have so generously donated to the only charity to carry the name of Round Table.

EditorialThe Printed Word

Once again the subject of the Club magazine was raised by one speaker at the AGM, a traditional target since it was first published 62 years ago. I also receive the occasional letter telling me that it is just not needed in this age of electronic communications.

Let me state my case as to why the Links magazine is important to our organisation.

Firstly it is the Association’s public interface with the rest of the world. Every organisation I am a member of has a house magazine as it gives a level of respectability to the organisation and allows those who are not members to see what club is all about. It can be used as recruiting material and as a means to interest possible sponsors.

Secondly it keeps members informed of what is happening in their organisation beyond the bounds of their local club. It is no longer a series of officer and regional councillor reports, but rather a magazine for the members, about the members and by the members. I often ask when I visit clubs how many members simply throw their copy straight into the bin. The number is sometimes alarmingly

high, but I challenge them to remove the wrapper next time and have a look inside. There should be at least one item of interest to every member. If your idea of the magazine is the same old same old then you are in for a shock .... the magazine has changed.

The argument that it has been replaced by this newsletter has little foundation. I hope that you feel that the newsletter has been a useful tool in ensuring better communication with you the member, but it is designed for a different purpose, to provide timely information to the members, it is not designed to carry full articles or major photographic content.

It is also a fact that we only have just over 9,900 members’ email addresses on the CAS database, and many of these are incorrect or out-of-date. This means that if we stopped the Links magazine nearly half the membership would have no correspondence with the Club at all. Indeed there are many who really enjoy reading a magazine about their Association.

By judicial control over the costs of the magazine the first three editions edited by myself have cost every member

approximately £2.06. That is £2.06 for three 32 page full colour magazines delivered to your door. Most interest magazines these days cost over £3.00 per edition and for that you have to collect it yourself.

The recent Mosaic profile conducted on our mailing list has shown that we have a very attractive profile for many advertisers and we will be seeking relevant companies to advertise in our magazine, thereby reducing the cost of production and distribution.

However if you are still not persuaded to remove the wrapper and read the magazine then the solution is in you own hands! Every member that receives the Links magazine is on the CAS database as requiring one copy. If you want to stop your copy then ask your Club Contact to change the number of copies you require from 1 to 0. A very simple thing to do. You will no longer receive a magazine to throw away and the cost to the club will be reduced by £2.06 per year, per member that does this. You will of course still be able to read the Links magazine on-line if you wish.

The answer is in your hands!

Having recently celebrated the 30th Charter Anniversary of our Club, in February, 2012, the 41ers at Inverness decided that a very special event was called for. Casting our minds back not too many years, it was quickly agreed to repeat the extremely successful Club celebration for our 25th birthday, when 32 members and wives travelled to mainland Spain for a week long

party, joining up with the then recently formed 41 Club at Calpe.

This time round, the venue chosen was Santa Ponsa, on the Island of Majorca, in April, with contact being made in advance with the Majorcan Club members.

The group of 28 having made the trip, quickly settled into their week’s 4* all inclusive stay and within a couple of

days were represented at the AGM of Majorca 41 Club, where a banner was presented and having sourced the now defunct Loch Ness Monster 41 Club badges in sufficient numbers, presented these to each Majorcan member, to their delight, (or so they said).

As well as enjoying the very welcome sunshine, (although there was a cool breeze around), a joint lunch was hosted at our Hotel and later in the week, a joint Club coach outing for a day on the magnificent West coast of the Island, was arranged by the local Club members.

It quickly became apparent, that as with the Calpe members, there was a strong bond of 41 friendship ready to be tapped into. Each group quickly feeling perfectly at home in the other’s company. This ready welcome I am sure, will have been experienced by many other 41ers who have sampled 41 Club on the International stage and brought much pleasure to the Inverness party. The group photograph shows a tired but happy group, having just arrived back on the coach accompanied by Majorcan members and wives.

41 Club partners with the Prostate Cancer Charity in the fight against prostate cancer

41 Club – more formally known as The Association of Ex-Round Tablers’ Clubs – is joining forces with The Prostate Cancer Charity for a year-long partnership, to raise a substantial sum to help fund vital research and support services.

The club will be calling on its 18,000 members to unite in the fight against prostate cancer with a variety of

fundraising activities and personal challenges over the course of the year to help raise its target.

The partnership will also help to raise awareness of prostate cancer – the most common cancer in men in the UK which mainly affects those over 50 – amongst 41 Club’s members, who are all at least 41 years old and therefore a key group to engage in the cause.

David Smith, President of 41 Club, said: “I am delighted to promote the Prostate Cancer Charity as the Association’s Presidential Charity 2012-13. Every man is at risk from this disease and it is important that we

look after our health and support The Prostate Cancer Charity in its efforts to increase awareness and reduce the risk”.

Mark Bishop, Director of Fundraising at The Prostate Cancer Charity, added: “We are delighted that 41 Club has decided to partner with The Prostate Cancer Charity and we are hopeful that the partnership will raise both awareness and vital funds for research, campaigns and the Charity’s support services, directly helping those affected by the disease.”

All good things come to an end and the good thing that came to an end for me was my time spent on National Council. I thank all the clubs in Region 21 for the welcome I was given each and every time I visited during the three years I spent as National Councillor. It was great to meet so many 41ers with a sense of fun and fellowship and I now count them all among my friends. This period was followed by two years as

the Association’s National Conference Officer. Fun and friendship was again the thread that ran through everything that I tried to achieve and this culminated in a fantastic conference in Jersey last month. What a great event and so well supported. It is now time for me to say good bye and to thank all those guys and gals who have made this period in my life such fun and so fulfilling.

If it has ever crossed your mind to get

more involved with 41 Club then don’t hesitate to throw your hat in the ring and I promise you will not be disappointed.

I wish my successor, Barry Durman, good luck as he starts his role as Fellowship Officer. I know he will not regret his decision

Thanks once again and I look forward to seeing you at future events.

And Finally ....Which level of wheels have you attained?

Memorable Sayings Of Winston Churchill

PresidentialRe-union At Jersey

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

There is no such thing as a good tax.

Some see private enterprise as a predatory target to be shot, others as a cow to be milked, but few are those who see it as a sturdy horse pulling the wagon.

The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.

We contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.

An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile—hoping it will eat him last.

The problems of victory are more agreeable than the problems of defeat, but they are no less difficult.

From now on, ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I shall not put.

A fanatic is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject.

Bessie Braddock: “Sir, you are drunk.” Churchill: “Madam, you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober.”

Nancy Astor: “Sir, if you were my husband, I would give you poison.”Churchill: “If I were your husband I would take it.”

A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.

Once in a while you will stumble upon the truth but most of us manage to pick ourselves up and hurry along as if nothing had happened.

It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations.

You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.

If you have ten thousand regulations, you destroy all respect for the law.

You can always count on Americans to do the right thing—after they’ve tried everything else.

History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.

The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.

A sheep in sheep’s clothing. (On Clement Atlee)

A modest man, who has much to be modest about. (On Clement Atlee)

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and one man dies every hour of the disease.
