Mission of the Month - Lutheran School of Theology The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, a

seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in

America (ELCA), forms visionary leaders to bear

witness to the good news of Jesus Christ.

LSTC graduates are grounded in the Lutheran

tradition and informed by ecumenical and inter-

faith relationships. They are able to respond to

the diversity and changing dynamics of contem-

porary life. They knowledgeably interpret the

Scriptures and the ecumenical traditions of the

church; witness to the reconciling Word of God

through their lives and their ministries of ser-

vice, teaching, preaching, administering the sac-

raments and inviting people to the Christian

faith. They care for God’s people and God’s cre-

ation, revitalizing the church as it seeks to trans-

form the world.

LSTC strives to offer a community and academic

experience that is grounded in the good news of

the gospel and shaped by our urban, multicul-

tural, ecumenical, global, interfaith and universi-

ty-related context and commitments.

Our primary mission is to prepare women and

men for a complex, pluralistic world in need of

faithful and courageous ministers to serve in a

variety of contexts. Although a large percentage

of students come to LSTC to prepare for or-

dained or lay rostered ministries in the Evangeli-

cal Lutheran Church in America, LSTC is also

enriched and transformed by ecumenical and

interfaith students in our various master's and

doctoral programs, as well as ecumenical and

interfaith colleagues.

As a Reconciling in Christ seminary, LSTC seeks

to offer hospitality and welcome to all who enter

LSTC's academic programs. Following Jesus

Christ, whose reconciling love bridged barriers

and made strangers friends, we seek to welcome

and learn from one another's particularity-

including but not limited to one another's race,

national or ethnic origin, age, gender, sexual

orientation, gender identity and expression,

physical ability, social status and theological di-

versity.

LSTC is always becoming a reconciling commu-

nity. Reconciliation is an ongoing activity and

effort that we do together.

Our New Library We are so grateful for all of the donations to help

furnish our new Youth & Family Wing and the

New Administrative Offices. We now are in the

process of bringing our Library up to date and ask

that you consider donating to this cause.

Book of the Month: Rev. Dr. Herbert Chilstrom was

the first presiding bishop of the

ELCA. His autobiography “A

Journey of Grace” describes the

Background to the formation of

our church and the challenges it

faced as a new church. Since we

are celebrating the 25th anniver-

sary of the ELCA, this book provides a wonderful

context for our celebration.

This book is available in the church library.

Book Donations

We want to thank the following people for these

most recent donations to the church library:

Carol Suomu: “The Christian Traveler

Nancy Inskeep: “Swallowing the Golden

Stone “& “Water, Come Down”

Back to School BOOK DRIVE!

Please consider donating your gently used

children's books (age birth-6th grade) to the

Bernie's Book Bank bin located in the Youth &

Family Ministry wing. Bernie's Book Bank is

located in Lake Forest and is responsible for

the collection and distribution of reading

materials to at-risk youth in Lake and Cook

counties. Each child receives 12 age-

appropriate books each school year, helping

them create at-home libraries.

Look forward to...

Mark your calendars for

the 1st annual

OKTOBERFEST!

On October 19th, 2013, St.

Mark's is partnering with other local Lutheran

churches to host an Oktoberfest at Holy Cross

Lutheran Church on St. Mary's Road in

Libertyville. Tickets will be sold this fall and

will include a catered dinner, two live bands,

and an impressive silent auction. This event

will benefit Waukegan to College students' trip

to Leadership Lab at Augustana College. If

you have big-ticket items to donate, please

contact Laura Raykiewicz to arrange a tax-

deductible donation. We are hoping to include

time-share destinations, boating outings, etc.

Summer Worship Schedule Ends Thank you to all who

supported our Worship on

“GLOBAL COOLING”

Planting Kindness in a

Challenging World

By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,

patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,

gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against

such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus

have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the

Spirit. Let us not become conceited, competing

against one another,

envying one another. Galatians 5:22-26

In his book, “The Power of Kindness,” Italian

psychotherapist, Dr. Piero Ferrucci describes the

pace of living today as a kind of “global cooling.”

He states that the impact of new technologies has

made communications hurried and impersonal;

with the drive for profit overriding the heart.

While Dr. Ferrucci is convinced we are going

through an “ice age of the heart,” he offers a

simple solution: kindness!

Dr. Ferrucci states that kindness is a central factor

in our lives: it can help guide us through a cold

world that is marked by an epidemic of

depression and loneliness. He tells us that

“kindness has surprising power to transform us,

perhaps more than any other attitude or

technique.”

Dr. Ferrucci is the nephew of Aldous Huxley, the

great English writer and a pioneer in the study of

philosophies and techniques aimed at

developing human potential. Huxley, toward

the end of his life, said in a lecture, “People often

ask me what is the most effective technique for

transforming their life. It is a little embarrassing

that after years and years of research and

experimentation, I have to say that the best

answer is—just be a little kinder.”

In his book Dr. Ferrucci demonstrates that if we

foster basic human qualities such as kindness

and compassion, our lives will become more

meaningful, happier, and more peaceful. By

loving one another, we can make a positive

contribution to the world around us. Now isn’t

that what Jesus is teaching us?

Kindness, one of the fruits of the Spirit, must

never be underestimated. By treating others

with kindness, we open the doors and our hearts to

others, becoming a part of each other’s lives.*

Let us be faithful and loving to one another,

Jill Shepherd

Thank You To St. Mark’s

I want to thank everyone for

their kind words and sup-

port. I would also like to

thank Pastor Koth for the

nice service; it was lovely for you to do that for my

Mother. I am thankful for everyone who participat-

ed in the events to remember my Mother at her pass-

volunteers. I am thankful she had such good friends

at St. Mark’s; everyone has been so kind in remem-

bering my Mother, Elisabeth Orna, I will be forever

in St. Mark’s debt for all they have done for my dear

Mother through the years.

Throughout his long and courageous battle against

cancer, Jay and I appreciated all the cards and phone

calls, visits from Pastor Koth and calls from Pastor

Blomquist. Now we, Jay’s family, thank all of you

for your condolences and support. A huge thank

you to the hospitality team for the delicious lunch-

Dear St. Mark’s

Thank you for your recent give of $1,165.00 to sup-

port the mission and ministry of ELCA.

As the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, I want to per-

sonally thank you for your gift. Your support helps

the ELCA share the light and promise of Christ with

individuals and congregations here in the U.S. and

throughout the world.

We are the church that shares a living, daring confi-

dence in God’s grace. Your gift will help train new

leaders, open the doors of new congregations and

share the gospel with others. Continued on Page 7

Together as the ELCA we are 10,000 congregations,

65 synods, and numerous churchwide ministries

freed in Christ to love and serve our neighbors in

our communities, our nation, and around the

world. We do more together than we could ever do

alone. Thank you for your support.

In God’s Grace,

Mark S. Hanson, Presiding Bishop

Dear Friends,

It is with deep appreciation that we acknowledge

your check in the amount of $401.00 to help those in

need. What a blessing you are in to this ministry!

It is because of your generosity that we are able to

continue to assist the growing number of Lake

County residents who come to us for help in mak-

ing ends meet.

I recently received a note from a mother who grad-

uated from our housing program many years ago.

She asked that we tell our donors how much the

help she received from COOL has meant to her

family.

In her note, she wrote “let them know that especial-

ly now programs like COOL are essential to the

health and well-being of many of the under-

employed or unemployed in our country. Tears

well up in my eyes, when I think of the compassion

and encouragement you showed to me. God al-

lowed you to bring peace and stability to our world

after the house burned down and we lost virtually

everything.”

Your faithfulness helps us to reach out to our neigh-

bors in need and to provide a helping hand. We are

always working to improve our services and to bet-

ter address the needs of families in Lake County.

Your support affirms our efforts, and helps us in

answering the call. Thank you for your partnership

in ministry.

Sincerely,

Diane Thackston

works to provide relief for Syria In response to the humanitarian crisis

in Syria, the Evangelical Lutheran

Church in America (ELCA) is provid-

ing more than $540,000 to the Syriac

Orthodox Church to support its outreach to people

displaced from their homes but remain in Syria be-

cause of the violent conflict. According to news re-

ports, the conflict in Syria has claimed 100,000 lives

since the fighting began in 2011. Funds from ELCA

Lutheran Disaster Response will provide for six-

month’s worth of rent for 500 families, health services

and supplies for children and infants, and support

medical programs and surgeries. On a recent trip to

Chicago, His Eminence, patriarchal office director of

the Syriac Orthodox Church in Damascus, discussed

the effects of the fighting on the entire population of

Syria, across all sectarian and ethnic divides. “It is not

only the Christian(s) who are harmed or affected by

this situation. I’m scared about the entire Syria, but

because we (Christians) are a minority in Syria, the

minorities are usually more affected by a civil war or a

problem like our Syrian problems,” said Kawak. Read

Would you like to make a gift to your congregation

and/or other favorite church charities but are not sure

what your future financial needs will be? You can

make charitable giving part of your will or you could

simply change the beneficiary statement of an insur-

ance policy, qualified retirement plan, commercial an-

ways you can make an estate gift to support your fa-

MISSION MOMENT – ELCA seminary marks

150th anniversary of Battle of

Gettysburg Exactly 150 years ago on July 1, 1863, Union cavalry

commander Gen. John Buford observed Confederate

soldiers advancing on Gettysburg from the west. He

surveyed the advance from the cupola of a Lutheran

seminary building. Within a few hours the fields sur-

rounding the seminary became a battleground, turn-

ing the seminary building into perhaps the largest

field hospital of the three-day Battle of Gettysburg.

The Seminary Ridge Museum opened July 1, 2013,

inside that building, historically known as Schmuck-

er Hall on the campus of the Lutheran Theological

Seminary at Gettysburg. The seminary is one of eight

in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

(ELCA). In a special ribbon-cutting ceremony attend-

ed by Civil War re-enactors, tourists, dignitaries and

others, the museum opened with its 20,000 square

feet of interactive exhibit galleries that tell the story

of the first day of the battle on Seminary Ridge, the

care of the wounded and human suffering within the

walls of the building, and an examination of faith

and freedom. “People come for the re-enactment, but

my prayer is that people leave with a recommitment

to reconciliation for racial justice and peace,” said the

Rev. Mark S. Hanson in remarks following the rib-

bon cutting. “The 50th anniversary of the civil rights

movement combined with the 150th anniversary of

the Battle of Gettysburg (serves as occasions where

we) can come together and ask, ‘What is the unfin-

ished work bequeathed to us? What is the unfinished

work of freedom?’”

Join the New International Prayer Vigil on the

24th of Every Month This global ecumenical prayer vigil began on Decem-

ber 24, 2012 and will continue across the globe on the

24th of every month, until the occupation of Pales-

tine ends, all violence ceases and there is a just and

negotiated resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli con-

flict. By engaging in this vigil we are declaring that

God’s grace is the source of all peace and through

prayer we are humbling ourselves to God’s will for all

creation. We offer this prayer vigil as an opportunity

for congregations to incorporate the welfare of the

people of the Middle East into the heart of their

church life: in their worship, in their learning, and in

their advocacy. Gather a few people together at lunch

time or join with area churches to host a prayer vigil

together with an educational time after prayer. There
