Dear Families.

I am finally back at St. Aloysius following my family holiday to New Zealand. My wife and I had a lovely time enjoying the hospitality, the food and numerous attractions New Zealand has to offer. I would like to thank and congratulate all our staff for continuing the wonderful work we do at St Aloysius working “a man down”. A special thanks to Donna who was Acting Principal in my absence and did such a sterling job! A reminder that next Thursday, 5th May is a School Closure Day, a pupil free day for St Aloysius as our entire staff will attend the next day of our OLSEL training in Ballarat. This is the 3rd day of a 4 day program and the learning from the first 2 days has really improved our effectiveness in teaching Literacy right across our school. So we look forward to Day 3 with great anticipation. The final day of our OLSEL training in Ballarat will be on Thursday, 4 August 2016. We have our World-of-Maths session for families this evening starting at 6.00pm Families are welcome to attend any time from 6.00 – 8.00pm and have some fun with the children while learning about the exciting work we do with Mathematics teaching and learning at St Aloysius. Our thoughts and prayers are for our PE teacher Sue Purves who is having a hip replacement this week. Sue is planning to be back at work before the end of term so let us keep her in our prayers. Thanks to Bev Baxter who organised our school presence at the ANZAC Day commemoration services in Ballarat on Monday. Well done Bev and thanks also to the children and families who attended the service and paid tribute to the brave people who gave their lives in fighting for many of the freedoms we enjoy today.

We appreciate parents being so proud of our children at the ANZAC service but we need to be careful that we only include photos of our own children if we are uploading them to Facebook. Our Walk-a-thon will be held tomorrow, Thursday, 28 April. Departing school at 12:45pm we will walk to the new adventure playground in Victoria Parl. Families are most welcome to join us for the walk or to meet us at the playground. Our annual Walk-a-thon is a major P&F run fundraiser for our school, let us hope we can raise some valuable funds for our school through the children’s efforts and support from our families and friends. Families of children celebrating their First Eucharist later this year have an information meeting this Thursday 28 April at either 10.00am or 7.00pm. It would be great to see all these families attending one of these meetings. Mother’s Day - We will be holding our traditional Mother’s Day liturgy at 9:30am on Friday, May 6th. All mothers, grandmothers and special women in our children’s lives are warmly invited to this event. After the liturgy, all of these women will be invited back to their children’s Family groups to participate in an activity and at 11:00am we will share morning tea together with the children. All mums are welcome to join their children outside to play. The Mother’s Day events will finish at approximately 11.30am.

Our Foundation and Year 5 /6 children start their swimming program next week and we would hope to see the children enjoying the program and improving some of their swimming skills. The Interschool sports for our Senior school children will commence this week. There will not be any Grade 3/4 Interschool sports sessions this year due to circumstances beyond our control.

Have a great week everyone, Joe Caruana Principal

JUNIOR NEWS

Hello and welcome to week 3. Lots of walking this week! On Thursday we have our Walk-a-thon day and on Friday we are walking to the post-office to post a special letter. If all permission slips could be returned to school before these days, that would be great. In our morning literacy blocks we have been listening to the song 'Ants in the apple', this a great song which sings the alphabet and each letters sounds. The children enjoy singing along, if you wish to listen at home this is the YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byZVlYaRoV8 The children had a fantastic time exploring the World of Maths roadshow today and we are extremely excited to share this with our families this evening. We hope you have a fantastic week, the Foundation team. Hello everyone and welcome to Week 3. The Ballarat weather is just glorious at the moment. Tomorrow is our School Walkathon. MIDDLE NEWS

Welcome to week 3, after a reflective ANZAC weekend. This week, the children are continuing with their preparation NAPLAN and if they would like to follow through with some of this they can access Study ladder for NAPLAN activities at home on their computers. The 3/4 Unit is currently learning about the cultures of our neighbouring countries. In Religious Education we are focusing on the stories of creation and psalms that praise God for creation. In maths we have begun to learn about division and multiplication. This Wednesday we are very excited about Our Maths World Day and would be delighted to see as many parents attending the night session anytime between 6:00pm and 8:00 pm, this evening. This week is another busy one as we have the Walk-a-thon on Thursday. In preparation the children have been running laps in the morning to improve their personal fitness levels. Some other reminders are that we are still waiting on some of our Learning Journals to be returned, please. A reminder also that children need to bring library bags so they are able to borrow from the Library. If children bring slippers to school to wear in class on the wet (muddy) days, please ensure that they are a practical style suitable for the classroom. Jo, Anne and Kelvin.

SENIOR NEWS

Welcome to week 3 in the Senior unit. We would like to say a big thank you to all the families who joined us for the 5/6MB liturgy. It was also great to see so many families join us for our ANZAC Day prayer on Friday. Throughout the day the senior students engaged in a range of activities with an ANZAC Day focus. The students watched news segments relating to ANZAC Day, investigated maps of Gallipoli, created an iMovie and also made traditional ANZAC biscuits. A big THANK YOU to the mums who were able to help out with the cooking. Your help is greatly appreciated.

In preparation for an upcoming art lesson we are in need of clean soup or spaghetti tins that are free of any sharp edges. Any spare tins can be passed onto Ms Byron please. Tomorrow, we are all eagerly looking forwards to our Walk-a-thon, and walking in our family groups to visit the new playground at Victoria Park. Families are welcome to join us this Friday's for the 5/6PW liturgy at our whole school prayer. Have a great week! Katherine, Tamara, Claire and June

CAN you help! The seniors students are on the lookout for donations of clean empty tin cans; soup, baked beans or spaghetti tins for their upcoming craft project. They are hoping for 50 tins that are free of any sharp edges, so if you have a few spare tins at home please drop them into school.

Please join us for this very special celebration Mother’s Day Liturgy

Friday, May 6th

St. Aloysius Church, commencing at 9:30 am

We look forward to including all our families and their children in this treasured tradition

of our Mother's Day liturgy.

To celebrate all the ‘Mums’ of St. Aloysius we would like to screen a slideshow in the school foyer of our children with their Mum (or other ‘special woman’ in their lives) as part of our Mother’s Day celebration.

We invite each family to submit a favourite photo of their child or children pictured with their Mum (or special person) for inclusion in the slide show.

This is a celebration of our special bonds, a memory that brings joy and a smile, so please don’t feel it needs to be a professional photo.

Photos for inclusion in the slideshow need to be submitted by no later than Friday, April 29th.

Photos can be emailed to [email protected]

Or if you would like us to take a photo, please see your child’s teacher.

We look forward to including all our families and their children in this treasured tradition

of our Mother's Day liturgy.

In November last year Pope Francis called for the Catholic Church around the world to celebrate a Year of Mercy.

Pope Francis’ message to the young people of the word.

The Church is celebrating the Holy Year of Mercy, a time of grace, peace, conversion and joy. It is meant for everyone: people of every age, from far and near. There are no walls or distances which can prevent the Father’s mercy from reaching and embracing us. The Holy Door is now open in Rome and in all the dioceses of the world.

This grace-filled moment also concerns you, dear young people. I encourage you to take an active part in this celebration and to realize that each of you is a child of God.

We pray, Mary, the mother of Mercy. May her merciful gaze be upon us throughout this Holy Year, so that all of us may rediscover the joy of God’s tenderness.
