My dear parishioners,

As we approach the end of the liturgical year, our Sunday

readings remind of us Christ’s second coming, his judgement of

the living and the dead, and the mystery of eternal life. In this

Sunday’s Gospel (Mt 25:1-13), Jesus tells the parable of the ten

virgins, in which he speaks of Heaven as the eternal wedding

banquet: “the bridegroom came and those who were ready went

into the wedding feast with him” (Mt 25:10). In the person of

Jesus Christ, God has come to earth to wed mankind to himself.

Jesus is the bridegroom and the Church is his bride. Husbands

and wives united in the sacrament of holy matrimony have the

great privilege and task of witnessing to the world the great love

between Christ and his Church.

On March 19, 2016 (the Solemnity of St. Joseph), Pope Fran-

cis published his much anticipated Apostolic Exhortation On

Love in the Family Amoris Laetita (The Joy of Love). Having read

and reflected on this text, the Lord has put it on my heart to

share with you in this bulletin column some of the Holy Father’s

catechesis on the sacrament of marriage and family life. For this

first installment, I would like to start with a passage from the

last paragraph of this document, as well as the Pope’s prayer to

the Holy Family (below). Pope Francis states: “no family drops

down from heaven perfectly formed; families need constantly to

grow and mature in the ability to love. This is a never-ending

vocation born of the full communion of the Trinity, the profound

unity between Christ and his Church, the loving community

which is the Holy Family of Nazareth, and the pure fraternity

existing among the saints of heaven…. All of us are called to

keep striving towards something greater than ourselves and our

families, and every family must feel this constant impulse. Let us

make this journey as families, let us keep walking together.

What we have been promised is greater than we can imagine.

May we never lose heart because of our limitations, or ever stop

seeking that fullness of love and communion which God holds

out before us” (n. 325).

Fr. Draper

Prayer to the Holy Family

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendour of

true love; to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth,

grant that our families too may be places of communion and

prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic

churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again

experience violence, rejection and division; may all who have

been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy

Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacred-

ness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s

plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Graciously hear our prayer. Amen.
