Montenegro
Montenegro is a sovereign state in Southeastern Europe. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the
southwest and is bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest,
Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east, and Albania to the southeast. Its capital and largest
city is Podgorica, while Cetinje is designated as the Old Royal Capital.
Classified by the World Bank as an upper middle-income country, Montenegro is a member of
the UN, NATO, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in
Europe, the Council of Europe and the Central European Free Trade Agreement, and a founding
member of the Union for the Mediterranean. Montenegro uses the euro as its domestic currency,
though it is not an official member of the euro zone.
The government recognizes the need to remove impediments in order to remain competitive and
open the economy to foreign investors. Net foreign direct investment in 2016 reached 755
million USD and investment per capita is one of the highest in Europe.
Montenegro has both a picturesque coast and a mountainous northern region. The Montenegrin
Adriatic coast is 295 km long, with 72 km of beaches, and with many well-preserved ancient old
towns. Nowhere else can you find so much natural beauty, mild beaches, clear lakes, fast rivers
and gorgeous mountains in such a compact area as in Montenegro.
Podgorica
Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro.
Podgorica's favorable position at the confluence of the Ribnica and Moraca rivers and at the
meeting-point of the fertile Zeta Plain and Bjelopavlici Valley has encouraged settlement. The
city is close to winter skiing centers in the north and to seaside resorts on the Adriatic Sea.
Podgorica Municipality covers 10.4% of Montenegro's territory and is home to 29.9% of the
country's population. It is the nation's administrative center and its economic, cultural, and
educational focus.
A major advance in Podgorica architecture began in the late 1990s and, since then, the face of
the city has changed rapidly. Residential and business construction are proceeding rapidly,
incorporating contemporary glass-and-steel architectural trends. In an effort to create a
recognizable and modern state capital, city officials are routing significant investments in city's
public spaces.
Podgorica is not only the administrative center of Montenegro, but also its main economic
engine. Most of Montenegro's industrial, financial, and commercial base is in Podgorica. The
large presence of government and service sectors spared the economy of Podgorica from
prolonged stagnation in the late 2000s recession, which hit Montenegro hard. Although, in mid-
2014, some 30% of Montenegro's citizens lived in Podgorica, the municipality accounted for
44% of the country's employed. Out of the entire mass of paid net salaries in Montenegro in
that year, some 47% was paid in Podgorica. The average monthly net salary in May, 2014 was
€509 in Podgorica municipality.
Proprietor
VOLI TRADE LTD
The company Voli Trade LTD was founded in 1995, and begun its operations with a single
supermarket in Blok 5 neighborhood of Podgorica. The company has been expanding its retail
network ever since, and as of 2012, its food retail market share in Montenegro stands at
around 25%.
Its retail network consists of 35 outlets throughout Montenegro, with concepts ranging from
convenience stores to a company owned shopping mall, with VOLI hypermarket as anchor
tenant. VOLI is also official distributor for Montentegro for several popular regional food
brands, such as Carnex, Vital and Vindija.
In addition to its retail business, in 2011 VOLI became authorised dealer for BMW and Mini car
makers for Montenegro.
In the same year, the company became the general sponsor of BC Buducnost Podgorica, the
country's most successful basketball club. The club was renamed BC Buducnost VOLI, and
company's CEO, Dragan Bokan, has become the club's president.
