Dear Disciples of the Resurrected Christ, It seems like Lent and Easter are too close to Christmas this year. We have barely finished celebrating the birth of Jesus and we are now preparing for the death and resurrection of Christ. And yet, there is some deeper truth and challenge to our faith in this movement from life to death to resurrection. It reminds us of the urgency of our faith. When Jesus was in the midst of his brief three year public ministry, he urged his disciples and followers to act now “Repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matt. 3: 2). His challenge was to have our faith inform our life every day starting now. And so we set Lent as a time to prepare ourselves. We are not just preparing for Holy Week and Easter, but we are preparing to live as disciples now and for the rest of our lives. So I urge you to take the opportunity to participate in one of the Lenten book study groups based on a Study of the “I am” sayings of Jesus “Jesus Claims-Our Promises” by Rev. Maxie Dunnam. I also urge you to participate in the Wednesday Lenten Communion services in Knox Hall starting on Ash Wednesday. These intimate communion services are a wonderful time to commune with one another and God as we consider our faith journey together. Our Downtown Churches are also offering Tuesday Community Noon Lenten Services this year at Central United Church of Christ (118 West Ashley Street). Even though the location requires that we cross “The Highway,” I would encourage you to share this community service as an expression of our visible unity in Christ. They are wonderful services as different church lead a 30 minute worship service and prepare of meal for those who attend. As part of my person Lenten devotional discipline, I will be meeting with any interested persons in the Parlor from 7:30 to 8 am starting on Ash Wednesday for a brief devotion time. We will meet on Monday through Thursday each week in Lent and use the Book of Common Worship and our church’s devotion guide “Light in the Darkness” as our devotional materials. Please feel free to join me whenever you are available to share in this quiet time together and please use the devotion guide. It is a wonderful way to share this Lenten faith journey with our brothers and sisters in Christ at First Presbyterian Church.

Blessing and peace, Pastor Rob

6 Social Justice

As part of Jefferson City Faith Voices’ year long “Conversation on Race,” Rev. Starsky Wilson, co-chairman of the Ferguson Commission, spoke to about 50 people gathered at Quinn Chapel on January 13. The independent Commission spent over a year analyzing issues, amassing statistics, and listening to the stories of hundreds of people before issuing its 144 page report, “Forward through Ferguson: a Path Toward Racial Equity.” The Commission was charged with much more than looking at police procedures and problems; they were to examine racial and economic gaps in the St. Louis area and come up with specific recommendations to make the area a fairer and more just place for all.

The final Commission report includes 41 primary calls to action in four sections: Racial Equity, Justice for All, Youth at the Center, and Opportunity to Thrive. Wilson stressed that we need to look at actions and laws carefully through a racial equity lens. Laws should not be passed without honestly looking at who is being impacted and the extent of the impact. The report also calls for clergy and faith leaders to engage in public dialogue and to be a part of policy making. The Justice for All component includes municipal court reform, standardizing policing practices, and training for police. The Opportunity to Thrive includes specific suggestions on issues such as Medicaid expansion, increasing the minimum wage, capping predatory lending, and public transportation. The longest section is Youth at the Center in which the Commission defines child “wellbeing,” and discusses specific ways to support the whole child, allowing the child to thrive.

Rev. Wilson stressed the importance of policy making to combat the issues of racism and poverty. There are many ways to impact policy making, which is clearly more than simply legislation, including carefully considering which philanthropic organization to support. He also urged us to become more involved to work as a faith community to work for justice and social change.

“Forward through Ferguson” is a comprehensive and thought-provoking report that could become a blueprint for St. Louis and other cities to follow. To read the full report, go to www.forwardthroughferguson.org.

OUR SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY TEAM will hold its next meeting on Monday, February 1 at 6:30 pm in the McAfee Room. Come join us as we seek to be faithful in fulfilling the mission of Jesus Christ and the prophetic call to work for justice in our community and beyond. The report following is on the January 13th presentation by Starsky Wilson, co-chair of the Ferguson Committee. Come join us! Contact Elder Scott Johnston or Pastor Dave for more information.

S.W.A.T. The Social Action Witness Teams from the four Presbyteries in Missouri – will meet in our McAfee Room on Saturday, January 30 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm to discuss issues of social justice and how we can work together to speak up for and assist those who are racially and economically oppressed in our State. If you are interested in knowing more about this, see Debby Howland.

SALVATION ARMY – We are called by God to feed the hungry and our church family does this in many ways, including our mission

through the Salvation Army Center of Hope. This mission involves preparing some food, and serving those who come to eat. If you would like information on becoming a member of one of our teams, please contact Deacon Dan McPherson or Pastor Dave.

FPC FOOD PANTRY Each month we see an increase in the number of folks in our community dealing with food insecurity – the reality of not knowing where their next meal will come from or if they will have enough to feed their children. We see this in the number of folks who come by our church seeking assistance through

our Food Pantry. We are providing two bags of groceries to fifty or more families each month, and with changes in the Food Pantry operation of another of the downtown churches, that number will likely increase. We are always in need of cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta & pasta sauce, peanut butter and other non-perishable food items. Items can be brought at any time. Monetary donations can also be given and our Deacon’s Local Missions Committee will purchase items needed in the Food Pantry. If you would like to help with this ministry, or would like more information, see Deacons Bob Rogers or Penny Gottschalk.

PERU MISSION TRIP 2016 The dates for our 2016 Mission Trip to the Amazon Jungle of Peru have been set – with the option of going for one week - May 27-June 4 or June 2-11OR for two weeks – May 27-June 11 (Pastor Dave will be going for two weeks). Again next summer, we will be involved in a construction project in Tamshiyacu, lead a Bible School for the children of the village, work with the Special Needs children, distribute water filtration systems and continue to build relationships with our friends there – and build new friendships as well. See Pastor Dave for more information! Deadline for application for this trip and the first payment is February 7th.

AGAPE HOUSE – Please continue to pray for God’s guidance on the Board of AGAPE House as they seek to discern God’s will for the future of this ministry and the house and property.

NEPAL MISSION TRIP 2016 When you receive this newsletter, Kyle Kittrell, Jeff Sanders and Pastor Dave will be in Nepal visiting with and working with our mission partners there through February 4, as we seek to be faithful in our call to provide educational experiences for more children there. Our Team will be in contact with many of the children we sponsor and their families, worship with Pastor Mahendra and the Aasish Presbyterian Church, and continue to build relationships with our mission partners in Nepal. Please pray for them, and stay tuned for information on their report in the coming weeks.

FAITH VOICES FOR JEFFERSON CITY Will hold its monthly Assembly Meeting on Monday, February 22 at 6:30 pm at Quinn Chapel. The new year will bring new challenges to the mission of assuring economic dignity and racial justice for all in our community and beyond. You are invited to join in this work. Each Friday we provide one or two volunteers at Common Ground to answer the phone, schedule appointments and welcome those who come in. Additional volunteers are needed. If you are interested in learning more about this mission, or considering volunteering, please see Pastor Dave.

RIVER CITY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY is always in need of volunteers to help with building homes. See Kyle Kittrell for more information.

First Presbyterian Church is actively involved in over 20 local, national and international missions, from serving meals at the Salvation Army only a few blocks from the church, to sponsoring children so that they can receive an education in Nepal. We provide food for our community neighbors through our Food Pantry and our Sunday evening fellowship dinners. We provide clean, safe drinking water for families in Peru and food for children in Malawi and the list goes on and on. Each mission depends on the prayers of many in our church family, and on volunteers who are able to give time and effort to the particular mission. If you would like to know more about any of our missions, or would like to serve on our Missions Committee, please see Elders Scott Johnston, Jane Beetem or Pastor Dave.
