Ÿ Substances for Topical Application are applied externally for localized problems such as bleeding, inflammation, swelling, pain, and oozing of fluids. Some are used to promote healing of skin lesions, others to stop itching. They are used alone as well as in combination, or as vehicles for other medications. They are applied as powders, ointments, washes, steams, or soaks. In some cases they are combined with other substances that are taken internally for local manifestations of a systemic disorder.
Ÿ While some of these substances can be taken internally, almost all of them have side effects. They must therefore be prescribed with caution and monitored very carefully. Those that are irritants should not be used on sensitive areas of the body.
Examples of dosage forms and applications to address two major distinguishing factors:
Wet disorders, such as ulcerations with pus and abscesses treated with powdered herbs to dry the affected area
Dry disorders, such as rashes and itching treated with herbal pastes to moisten the skin and facilitate recovery
