Summer Solstice BBQ - 24th June

The season has really started to gather pace in Essex over the last three months with our monthly meetings being very well attended. The June meeting especially so with 46 members attending our Summer Solstice BBQ at The Anchor, Danbury, bringing along 24 Ferrari’s of varying tipo and colour spanning 6 decades of Ferrari production from Terry Hoyle’s 1969 365 GT 2+2 through to the ’15’ registered FF, which is the current Lancaster Ferrari demonstrator.Once again, we were very well looked after by Louise & Neil who run the pub, ably assisted by Leo the barman who was keen to try out the new garden bar and although the designated drivers gave them little business -apart from lemonade and coke - the pumps were put through their paces by the rest of our party.

The 24th June was the Feast Day of St John the Baptist according to the Christian Church and we were well fed with the usual BBQ fair of burger, chicken, sausages, jacket potato etc. all cooked outside in the pub garden. As well as bringing along Lancasters FF demonstrator which got plenty of attention, Alex Lacey and Rob (sorry, I didn’t catch his surname) also kindly supplied a gift bag containing some official Ferrari goodies for us to raffle which raised £150 for their chosen charity, Whizz Kidz.

It was great to see a wonderful mix of long serving members happily mingling with the newer members, sharing stories and experiences and generally having a nice time, all with the wonderful backdrop of Italy’s finest gracing the car park behind them.Eventually, it was time to pack away the banners and flags, fire up the horses and head for home but although we had been allocated most of the car park, due to the number of Ferrari’s, we had needed to park wherever we could find room, which made for some interesting manoeuvering and worried looks when it came time to leave.

Maldon Motorshow 2015For the second year running wet weather greeted the early arrivals to Promenade Park in Maldon for the 2015 Maldon Motorshow on Sunday July 5th. Despite the rain we still had a good number of Ferraris on display, plus some other marques joining our line-up facing the river. Clearly the membership had read my email stating “Bring a Brollie for shade” but the downpour that started just as the punters were due to arrive at 10am proved too much even for the golfing umbrellas and we all sought refuge in the cars. My thanks to Keith for giving me shelter. Ian & Gino had already decided that the best place to see a Spyder is in the garage, and Greg & Kay Thompson remarked that they usually came along in their leaky Dino but this year they’re in their leaky Mustang! Did you ever get yourself a hat Greg?! Ray & Denise Jenkins spent what seemed like the entire morning in their 412i and poor Stuart & Sharon Howard were doing their best to catch up with me while rain literally poured from the roof into the cabin of their 360. I guess Ferrari wouldn’t want guttering spoiling the line, or the aerodynamics, of their supercars!

After the rain had passed it became a test of nerves as to who would leather their car down first. Alan Lewis blinked first with his California, followed by Dan How and his F40 Michelotto. Once the rest of us were sure we wouldn’t be wasting our time it was down to business for Ant Smith (360 Spyder), Terry Hoyle (365 GT 2+2), Jeff Simpson (Dino) & myself (550). Thankfully our efforts weren’t wasted as the clouds cleared around 1pm, which was nice as it meant we could all sit in the sun and watch Graham ‘Don Johnson’ Collett leather down his 360 while the Essex flag remained motionless above us.

5th July

Page 4: 318 July 2015 - The Ferrari Owners' Club · 2019. 10. 8. · from Terry Hoyle’s 1969 365 GT 2+2 through to the ’15’ ... Maldon Motorshow 2015 For the second year running wet

Another group had gathered at the farther end of our display with Keith Hughes (550), David Persault (355), Jan & Steve Target (348 and some fancy sodden moccasins) Vernon Smith (328) and Phil & Pauline Taylor in a red with cream interior Maserati, sneaking into the line-up as if anyone would notice…. the Maserati being a pretty car that really held it’s own amongst the Ferraris on display.

The Maserati wasn’t the only outsider on the Essex Ferrari stand, we were joined by Dave Smith in his pistachio green Opel Manta B-series, Nicky & Brian Davison in a Mancona, a Manta but with an Opel Ascona front end (Mancona, not Mankini) and my brother Chris in his Porsche 944, on display for the first time and looking good wearing fresh paint (the car,

that is). Vernon remarked how different Chris & I look and that he wouldn’t have had us down as brothers. Chris maintains that he got the looks and I got the money; if those were the looks on offer I’ll take the money, thank you. Next in line, and our first American car, were Greg & Kay with their 1965 Mustang that led us nicely into our little bit of Hollywood with Dan’s uncle David Redhead’s Highland Green 1968 Mustang 390GT Fastback and Dan’s father Chris’ black ’68 Dodge Charger 440 Magnum, both in full ‘Bullitt’ spec. It just goes to show what a diverse yet inclusive Area Group Essex Ferrari is; if you like cars (and lorries, Raymond) that’s great, if you like all-things-Ferrari that’s wonderful. But if you like huddling up with other grown men under a brollie, in a field on a cold, wet Sunday morning then come & join us! (entry fee £2 per car.. J )

And join us they did. PHR member John Seago came over to chat about Ferraris, in particular 360s & 430s, and hopefully we were of some use in providing information plus the occasional horror story about F1 clutches and engine rebuilds! I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating in my opinion, that FOC membership brings together a wealth of knowledge and experience that is a priceless commodity when it comes to buying/owning/servicing or racing a Ferrari. If I could bottle it and sell it I would, and this time next year Rodney I’d be a millionaire! This is from the guy that was trying to sell mugs out the boot of his Maranello at a fiver a pop! It was nice to meet you & your family, John, and we hope to see you again. Please feel free to contact Steve or myself if we can be of any assistance, or if you’d like a mug.

From assistance to assistants and I think The Maldon Austerity Award 2015 has to go to Jane Lewis who selflessly carried milk, hot water and two teabags along to warm up her dear husband, Alan. Just two teabags to last him the entire day, because teabags are, like, really bulky & heavy, not to mention the expense… Just kidding Jane, it was nice to see you & the boys. Thanks again to all of those that attended, I had a great time with many laughs and I hope you did too. Vernon, if you could please wear that orange T Shirt every time as it helped keep the flies away from the food, thanks muchly.

My Day at Goodwood Festival of Speed by Luca Hull

I got up at 5.00 O’clock. I quickly got dressed and cleaned my teeth because I didn’t want to get stuck in traffic, because today we were going to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Then we drove to Goodwood in Mummy’s Kuga. I listened to music on the way.

When we got there someone in a Goodwood Kuga gave us a lift to the entrance. Then I went to the Porsche stand. I saw a 918. Outside there was the car that won Le Mans 24 hours two weeks ago. I watched the race on tv and Nico Hulkenburg, a current Formula One driver won in this car.

Next I watched some Formula one cars drive up the hill. One even had six wheels.

I walked on a bit to the Ford stand. I went up several floors. I saw the new Ford GT. After that went to the top floor, which had no roof and I ran around on the glass that was covering the Ford GT. After that I went to get my

picture taken with Mummy, Daddy and Marco. A little later I went to queue for the Helter-skelter. I put some elbow guards on. Then I travelled down the Helter-skelter, it was really fast and fun.

Page 8: 318 July 2015 - The Ferrari Owners' Club · 2019. 10. 8. · from Terry Hoyle’s 1969 365 GT 2+2 through to the ’15’ ... Maldon Motorshow 2015 For the second year running wet

Next we went to the cricket pitch and into the bloodhound area. In there was a bloodhound, this car is trying to be the fastest car on land. It is trying to go over 1000mph. I read about all of the fastest things in the world. The fastest was Saturn V, a space rocket. Then we made some K’nex cars to see how fast they would go. I made my car as aerodynamic as I could. I pumped air, pushed a green button to charge it, then a red button to make it go down a track. Afterwards, we watched the Red Arrows Air Display Team. It was truly amazing. They did all their usual tricks. After that we had some hotdogs for lunch. Next daddy went to look at some cars, me mummy and Marco went to watch a BMX display. Then I went to the Vauxhall family experience.I met up with daddy and then we all watched a Typhoon make an air display. The best bit was when it dived down really fast. The then we went to look at the cars on the Concours lawn. I saw a black F40, A P4/5 and a red Mclaren F1. I didn’t like the other cars because they were a bit boring.

Next I went to the supercar paddock and the first car I saw was a FXX K. It looked really good. It is based on the La Ferrari, but this is a track car version. The Ferrari crew let me into to see the cars and they let me sit in the FXX K! When I sat in the car they put the harness on me. I felt really happy and I was really lucky to sit in this car.

I went to the F1 paddock and looked at some Ferrari F1 cars, but some were under covers as it was a bit late. Then unfortunately it was late and I had to go home.

Southend Italian Festival saturday 5th september

The Southend Italian Festival takes place on Saturday 5th September and we have been allocated prime position at the end of the High S t r e e t o u t s i d e t h e Vi c t o r i a Shopping Centre to display our cars . We have 12 Ferrar i ' s committed so far with another one or two promised by Lancaster Ferrari but we have plenty of room for more. There is a genuine Italian Market selling authentic Italian produce including pasta, cheese and bread; a mobile three-wheeler espresso bar for the coffee fans and Southend’s very own Rossi’s and Tomassi’s gellati (ice cream to you and me) companies will be there, hopefully providing refreshment from the Italian summer weather! It’s on order you know.We won’t be alone as the only Ferrari representatives either as the Scuderia Ferrari Team Transporter that featured in the film ‘Rush’ will be there too! Very exciting. The Essex branch of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club will be there in force along with several other Italian car clubs and for the bikers, there is also a Ducati display. But the day isn’t just about cars and food, how much more Italian can you get than the great Luciano Pavarotti? Of course, the man himself isn’t making a surprise appearance from beyond but a lookalike/soundalike will be entertaining the visitors along with the Funky Voices and The Big Sing choirs whilst Southend Brass Band will be playing traditional Italian music. Finally there will be an Italian Flag demonstration including professional flag bearers who will be demonstrating the Italian tradition of flag throwing. So, if you fancy a day filled with all things Italian, why not join us. Please let Steve or Jon know as soon as possible.

Italian Grand Prix Screening at Lancaster ferrarisunday 6th september

As part of our ever growing relationship with Lancaster Ferrari of Colchester we have been invited to join them at their showroom on Sunday 6th September for a live screening of Ferrari’s home Grand Prix at Monza.

The Scuderia has shown on several occasions this season that they have the pace to challenge the Mercedes’ of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg and usually have a good showing in front of a passionate tifosi, so where better to view the race (if you can’t actually be there!) than among fellow Ferrari fans at a Ferrari dealership?

Lancaster will be providing a buffet and refreshments and there will of course be several of the latest Ferrari and Maserati models in the showroom for us to view and as an added bonus, should there be sufficient staff available, they will also be offering a free health check for your Ferrari. This will be provided on a first come first served basis so be sure to get there early if you would like to take up this very generous offer as we’re expecting this to prove very popular.

If you would like to join us for this event please let either Steve or Jon know as soon as possible so we can inform Lancasters for catering purposes.

It seems not everybody is aware of the 'With You' Ferrari scheme but it basically provides free European breakdown cover on cars out of warranty. The recovery must be to a Ferrari dealership. All you do is complete the forms (examples below - links in separate email) and email them to [email protected] with a scan of your V5 log book. You get in return (after a couple of weeks) a confirmation you are covered together with phone numbers etc. to phone if you need it.

Thanks to Paul Crossley for this information.
