SAT., JUNE 27, 10 AM TO 1 PM : MADISON COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT IS OFFERING ITS FIRST DRIVE-THRU RABIES VACCINATION CLINIC IN ORDER TO ADAPT TO THE NEW HEALTH AND SAFETY CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. Madison County Health Department’s first Drive-Thru Rabies Clinic is Saturday, June 27, 2020 from 10 am to 1 pm at the Wampsville Highway Garage, 139 North Court Street in Wampsville. Pre-registration is required. Appointments are limited. Madison County residents should pre-register early to reserve their spot at http://www.health.ny.gov/Go2Clinic/27. If you do not pre-register for an appointment, we will not be able to vaccinate your pet. “We made the decision to cancel our previously announced schedule of walk-up clinics for 2020 for the health and safety of residents and clinic staff,” said Environmental Health Di-rector Aaron Lazzara “We look forward to begin offering drive-thru clinics that are convenient and less stressful for pets.” Only pet owners who pre-register in advance will be allowed to participate. Arrive within 10 minutes of your appointment time. Pre-register by June 25, 2020 online at http://www.health.ny.gov/Go2Clinic/27. Remain in your vehicle with your windows up for your safety as well as for the safety of clinic staff. A face covering must be worn by all persons in the vehicle. Pets MUST be properly restrained using a leash and collar, harness, cage or pet carrier. Vaccinations are free to Madison County residents. Voluntary donations are appreciated to help defray clinic costs. Please bring the exact amount for your donation, as clinic staff will not make change at drive-thru clinics Proof of previous vaccination is required to qualify for a three-year certificate. Proof of previous vaccination to be shown through closed vehicle window or submitted after the clinic. Participants will receive their pet’s rabies certificates by email. Public health law requires all dogs, cats and ferrets to be vaccinated by 4 months of age. A second vaccination must be given within one year of the first, and pets must be actively immunized against rabies thereafter. This typically requires a booster vaccination every three years for dogs and cats, and annually for ferrets. Due to COVID-19, the Madison County Health Department has cancelled its previously released 2020 schedule of walk-up rabies clinics for the year. Madison County Health Department is actively planning for additional drive-thru clinic offerings later in 2020. For assistance pre-registering online, call 315-366-2526 (Monday-Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm). Visit our rabies webpage https://www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/440/Rabies-Clinics announcing new drive-thru clinics as they are scheduled.

Olive Garden Roasted PotatoesI could eat the whole tray myself!

When we head to our favorite Italian restaurant, we, of course, love all the pasta and homemade sauces, but from time to time we go a different direction and try other great menu items, and we fell in love with these roasted potatoes. We can’t go out to eat every night, so we’ve figured out how to copycat some of our favorite menu items right in our own kitchen. No fancy ingredients required! Just a little of this and a little of that – potatoes, cheese, herbs – and we’ve got a delicious side dish, perfect with just about any meal.

These potatoes are cheesy and crispy on the outside, and full of creamy potato goodness on the inside. We weren’t quite sure we could mimic that type of deliciousness at home, but this copycat version is almost exact, and the addition of Parmesan cheese really takes things up a notch. It was the perfect accompaniment to last night’s lemon-herb chicken, and we can’t wait to try it with next week’s roast. We can’t think of too many things that wouldn’t taste great with these Parmesan potatoes. They’re even an elegant substitute for fries! As much as we love dining out – especially because someone else does all the cooking and cleaning – we also love to bring the restaurant experience right to our own dinner table.

INGREDIENTS: Serves 6; 45 minutes3 pounds baby red potatoes, quartered3/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated1/2 teaspoon garlic powder1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning2 1/2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted4 tablespoons olive oil1/8 teaspoon black pepper1 pinch red pepper flakes, optionalPREPARATIONPreheat oven to 450°F. Line baking sheet with parchment

paper or aluminum foil.Whisk together olive oil and butter in a large bowl. Mix in

garlic powder, dried Italian seasoning, salt and pepper.Toss potatoes in oil mixture until thoroughly coated.

Transfer potatoes to baking sheet, and roast for 25 to 30 minutes or until fork tender.

Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and toss to coat. Add chopped parsley for garnish. Enjoy!

4-H Youth Development - Thinking Outside the BucketMORRISVILLE, N.Y. — In our rural communities,

summer programs serve the vital role of maintaining safe social connections, providing opportunities to develop new skillsets, and inspiring kids to be adventurous. They provide safe spaces that youth can learn communication skills, play games, and even discover new things about themselves. While COVID-19 may have canceled most of our local camps, fairs, and school-based summer programs, Madison County 4-H Youth Development, in collaboration with members of the NYS 4-H Team and CNY SNAP are striving to create programs that replicate these experiences. Thanks to the generous donations of our local organizations, that is now possible.

These programs will have daily live virtual check-ins, pre-recorded instructional videos by educators and youth, and buckets filled with the materials needed for each day’s instructions. So far, we have received 300 5-gallon buckets from Runnings of Rome, material supply donations and prizes from Tractor Supply Company of Oneida, and $3,000 of grant support received from the CNY Community Foundation and the Madison County Rural Poverty Fund. Each week for 3 weeks we will be filling 50 buckets with age-appropriate theme-based activities and lesson plans, that will be made available to 150 Madison County youth. Our themes include “A Week at the Fair”, “Explore and Engage”, and “Agriculture in the Classroom”. We call this new program: “Thinking Outside the Bucket”.

This program will be made available to any youth in Madison County ages 5-13, though only 50 slots will be available each week. Slots will be filled on a first come first serve basis, with registration required. To ensure that youth receive opportunities to interact with both educators and other youth, each weekly program will be broken down into 2 programs (25 youth each). Those 25 youths will then be placed into breakout rooms with educators to perform different games and activities periodically throughout the program (8-9 youth in an activity group). Upon completion of daily check-ins, icebreakers, and games, the youth will be tasked with completing that day’s bucket project. Bucket projects include making birdhouses, scribble bots, fitness challenges, planting flowers and vegetables, making dog toys, sewing stuffed animals for local donations, and so much more! There will also be additional lesson plans based on the themes that youth can then complete on later dates with their families and friends.

Lessons are hands-on and cover areas such as agriculture, animal science, health and wellness, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), and civic engagement. Youth will receive shirts to commemorate their experiences, will be able to keep their buckets/projects, and there will be several opportunities for them to win additional prizes (such as completing their step challenges). We want our kids engaged, energized, and active this summer. Registration information provided below.

Madison County Announces June 27th Drive-Thru Rabies

Clinic in WampsvilleWampsville, NY - Madison County Health Department is

offering its first Drive-Thru Rabies Vaccination Clinic in order to adapt to the new health and safety challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We made the decision to cancel our previously announced schedule of walk-up clinics for 2020 for the health and safety of residents and clinic staff,” said Environmental Health Director Aaron Lazzara “We look forward to begin offering drive-thru clinics that are convenient and less stressful for pets.”

• Only pet owners who pre-register in advance will be allowed to participate. Arrive within 10 minutes of your appointment time. Pre-register by June 25, 2020 online at http://www.health.ny.gov/Go2Clinic/27.

• Remain in your vehicle with your windows up for your safety as well as for the safety of clinic staff.

• A face covering must be worn by all persons in the vehicle. • Pets MUST be properly restrained using a leash and collar,

harness, cage or pet carrier.Vaccinations are free to Madison County residents. Voluntary

donations are appreciated to help defray clinic costs. Please bring the exact amount for your donation, as clinic staff will not make change at drive-thru clinics.

Proof of previous vaccination is required to qualify for a three-year certificate.

3. Invest In Good Grilling UtensilsTrying to grab food from the campfire grill grate or from

the coals with your hands is a bad idea. You’ll only make that mistake once, and then you’ll get yourself a good pair of grilling tongs, flipper and oven mits. They can stay in your camp box and having tongs to grab or turn food that is cooking over hot coals is a must.

4. Don’t Cook Over An Open FlameThis is a common misconception with people who are new

to campfire cooking. They just assume the hottest part of the fire would be the raging flames. But this is not necessarily the case. If you are truly trying to cook something, not just burn the outside, then you want a more consistent heat. To make the best fire for cooking, let it burn down to those white hot coals, pile them up under your grill grate and let it work its magic. We always like to have a dedicated cooking area, so moving the nice hot coals to one side as the fire is still going on the other side.

5. Invest In A Campfire Grill GrateThis will drastically change how well you can cook over

a campfire. With the addition of a good grill grate, you’ll go from only being able to make hot dogs to making full course meals. A lot of campfire rings at campsites do offer a grill, but lets face it, you don’t know what has touched that. There are tons of portable grill grates to choose from and most are inexpensive. Plus you can get some really quality grates that are going to make cooking over the campfire easier.

6. Turn Food Cooking Over The Campfire OftenWe’ve all burnt food before and cooking over a campfire

can be even trickier for knowing when something will burn. As hard as we try, hot coals are not like an oven, sometimes the temperatures can fluctuate rapidly. One trick I have learned is to turn your food more often than you would in the oven or the grill. Every few minutes it is good to flip or move the food so that it can cook more evenly and has a lower chance of being charred to a crisp.

7. Use Olive Oil To Help Cook Camping MealsOlive oil is your best friend when campfire cooking. Use

it liberally. Olive oil can give any dish a little bit extra and is absolutely perfect for meats. We rub it all over the fish or meat that we are about to grill, and add a good amount of salt. Just those 2 ingredients can change the taste of an entire meal. In a good way. We use olive oil in most of our dishes when camping from high heat cooking to frying. It also goes great in salads and dips!

The Ultimate Guide to Backyard Camping

Rachel SeisSleep under the stars

without going too far from home. Just use our backyard camping guide to get started!

Whether you’re a camping newbie or have roughed it tons of times, backyard camping is a blast. You get to immerse yourself in the outdoors, without all the packing, planning and gear-buying associated with traditional camping (plus, having nearby access to a clean bathroom is a pretty big perk). Plan your mini-getaway for an outdoor adventure—complete with plenty of s’mores—with these helpful hints.

Three Ways to Create a Cozy CampsiteSetting up a cozy nest takes some teamwork. Here’s how

to do it.If you have a tent: Treat

your backyard like an honest-to-goodness campsite. Take your tent outside and find a smooth, flat surface to call home for the night. Everybody can pitch in, whether it’s spreading out a tarp first, or putting together the poles. Make it cozy inside by lining the tent floor with yoga mats, bed rolls or multiple layers of sleeping bags and cushy comforters. But if you really need extra comfort, there’s no harm in bringing out an inflatable air mattress for extra cushioning—it’s not cheating, it’s just making everyone’s experience a

whole lot happier! If you don’t: You can easily create a makeshift shelter by

tying a rope or clothesline between two trees and hanging a large tarp, blanket or canvas over top. Just make sure you have a dry place to sleep by laying a waterproof tarp underneath, then make it comfy by layering lots of blankets and cushy pillows on top.

Make it magical: Set the scene by hanging lamps or stringing lights around the tent (these will do the trick). They’ll illuminate your campsite with a soft glow, and help everyone feel more comfortable spending the night outdoors in the dark.

Cook Up Some Camp ChowOne of the best parts about camping? Eating around the fire!If you have a fire pit, it’s easy to roast hot dogs, toast

marshmallows, and even cook up meats and veggies in foil packets (check out some delicious foil-packet meals). Or get inspired for your outdoor cooking adventure with camp-friendly recipes.

If you don’t have a fire pit, a small charcoal grill will work. You can even make pudgy pies over the coals whenever tummies start to grumble.

Of course, you don’t need a campfire to eat like a camper. Pack sandwiches, trail mix, juice boxes and desserts in your

cooler to grab at the ready. And because s’mores are a necessity even without a fire, try these fun, flame-free mini s’mores that are easy to make in the kitchen and pack up to enjoy outdoors, even where there’s no campfire in sight.

Plan on Games and ActivitiesThere’s so much adventure to be had outside! From classic

backyard games to hikes around the block, here are some fun activities to keep the whole family entertained all day—and into the night.

Neighborhood Nature Hunt: Make a list of different types of plants and animals to spot in the backyard, around your neighborhood or in a nearby park. Pack a backpack with a camera, a journal and plastic bags, then set out for your neighborhood hike. Point out the objects you find from the list, then take a photo of each object. Record it in your nature journal, and write down how it looks and feels. For small objects, collect them in small plastic bags to inspect later and create your own nature collection.

Throwback Fun: Classic games like Simon Says, Telephone, Tag and Name That Tune are fun for all ages. Plus, they don’t require any extra packing!

Flashlight Foraging: Someone hides a small trinket or toy somewhere in the backyard, then, when it starts getting dark, everybody goes on a hunt to find the item. The hider may need to give people a hint for where to look, but they’ll love scavenging to find the treasure!

Campfire Stories: What’s a campfire without gathering around for some storytelling? Start with spooky stories regaled with an eerie flashlight glow illuminating your face. Or tell a story in-the-round, where each person takes turns to build upon the story as it goes. (Get ready for giggles!)

Stargazing: If it’s a clear night, spread out a big blanket, throw down some pillows, and cozy up together to look at the stars. You can bring pictures of constellations to search for, or use your imaginations to dream up your own star shapes!

Find more ideas for family camping games.

Make a Rule to Stay OutsideMake sure the event feels

like a real campout by prepping ahead so you won’t have to dash back in the house every few minutes. Pack up everything you’ll need to sleep

overnight, including a tent, sleeping bags, stuffed animals, pillows, flashlights, games, books, bug spray and a cooler packed with snacks and drinks.

Once you have all your essentials, make a pact that everyone should only go inside for emergencies and bathroom breaks (no sneaking in to check phones!), to make it feel like a real rustic getaway. And, of course, all electronics stay inside (that goes for parents, too!).

Whether it’s your first time camping as a family, or you just want a mini trip without all the hassle, backyard camping is fun at any age, because adventure can be found right outside their door.

Weapons: Quadcopter KillerJune 12, 2020: U.S. SOCOM (Special Operations Command)

has purchased 98 Israeli SMASH 2000 systems for their M4 rifles. This seen as a solution to the increasing ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) use of quadcopters in Syria and Iraq. SOCOM has become increasingly desperate to find an effective and reliable way to take down these small UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). Israel had a solution, which they originally developed for taking down kites and balloons used by Hamas in Gaza to send incendiary devices and small explosives across the border into southern Israel. Sharpshooters and snipers had proven somewhat useful but not very efficient. Few expert shooters could reliably bring down these small targets.

By early 2019 Israel found that a locally made device, SMASH 2000 could do the job once its software had been modified to handle kites, balloons and, it turned out, quadcopters. Initially SMASH 2000 could only guarantee a quadcopter hit if the small UAV was within 150 meters but that range has since been extended.

The IDF (Israeli Defense Force) had already adopted the SMASH 2000 computerized sniper scope in 2018 and renamed it Dagger. When asked, the firm that developed SMASH quickly modified the Dagger software to go after moving fire kites and fire balloons. It worked and troops with the new software could use Dagger to take down a kite or balloon several hundred meters distant with one shot. When bought in large quantities SMASH 2000 gear for a rifle costs under $10,000 and the price is falling as more are purchased. Israel issues Dagger gear to sharpshooters (troops recognized as more accurate shooters) and snipers (those trained to operate independently and covertly as a sharpshooter). American and Israeli military leaders are considering adopting Dagger more wisely, especially if the price comes down. The U.S. is considering incorporating SHASH 2000 tech in its next-generation assault rifle to turn all troops into sharpshooters.

Currently, SMASH 2000 is cost-effective if only one or two men in a Special Forces team (of twelve) have one. For SOCOM snipers, hitting the target with the first shot is even more important. SMASH 2000 enables troops to do that with more certainty and less stress for the shooter.

For Israel SMASH 2000/Dagger solved an immediate problem. Since early 2018 thousands of kites and helium balloons have been launched towards Israel. Each one is equipped with a lightweight incendiary device that goes off (most of the time) when it lands on the Israeli side of the border. The kites and balloons are more of a nuisance than a threat but have started

over a thousand fires. Most of these are small brush fires that do not spread, but several have destroyed crops or trees and required firefighters to put out. Eventually, some of the floaters carried small explosives. Israel has used airstrikes to destroy over a thousand of these kites and balloons on the ground at launching, storage or manufacturing sites, as well as several hundred in the air using UAVs operated by civilians who had developed similar skills for UAV “battles”. Israel has also adapted some radars and other sensors to detect these slow, low altitude objects and that made the special Dagger scope even more effective against the fire kite/balloon attack efforts. Because of all these countermeasures, the use of kites and balloons has declined but not disappeared.

The SMASH scope also convinced the IDF that this device could turn just about any soldier into a sharpshooter or sniper. First offered the SMASH scope in 2017, the IDF tried it out with the infantry and special operations troops and by the end of the year approved it for use. Based on that success, in early 2018 SMASH was offered to foreign militaries (and police organizations). By early 2019, the SMASH scope demonstrated its flexibility by how quickly its software could be modified to handle wind-blown targets like fire kites and balloons as well as quadcopters.

There were several major innovations in SMASH 2000 compared to the earlier computerized scopes pioneered by American firm TrackingPoint. SMASH could be mounted and used on any weapon with a Picatinny rail. This allows the scope software to work with the trigger of each different weapon. The scope puts a visual block around potential targets the user is aiming at. When the user has the intended target in the block, a button is pushed and that target is locked and a precise firing angle calculated, and shot automatically fired unless the user intervenes. Other computerized scopes use the same basic concept but more recent models do it more reliably and cheaper.

The most convincing test of the SMASH scope was to have new recruits use it while receiving their first rifle training. Some 70 percent of these novice shooters made accurate shots the first time they fired the SMASH equipped rifle. A few dozen shots later and they were performing like expert snipers. In the hands of snipers and experienced troops, SMASH enabled difficult (moving, obscured by smoke) targets to be hit with the first shot. The IDF was sufficiently impressed to order 2,000

SMASH systems, mainly for use by snipers. For snipers, hitting a target with the first shot is important because the second shot will often be impossible as the target was alerted by the first one and taken cover.

TrackingPoint pioneered this tech and in 2013 introduced its first computerized shooting system, the XS1. These initially cost $27,000 but the price has since come down to less than half that as the firm introduced more models and sales increased. These scopes were still expensive because they are sensor-equipped and computerized to the extent that initial tests showed that over 70 percent of first-time users could hit a target over 900 meters distant with the first shot. For a professional sniper first shot success averages about 25 percent and 70 percent on the second shot. The army tested the XS1 and found it worked but did not try to adopt the system for a lot of military sniper rifles, even though it would be a major improvement for snipers. The major obstacle was the wear and tear of battlefield use and the fact that most snipers were satisfied with their existing scopes. Snipers are trained to take good care of their rifles, scopes and the growing number of electronic gadgets they now use, but the XS1 was a major leap in terms of electronics, sensors and especially required maintenance. It was recognized that the XS1 technology was the future and just as the many new (since the 1990s) sniping accessories have become rugged and reliable enough to be standard items, so will the XS1 approach or something similar to it like SMASH. Meanwhile, the TrackingPoint tech was adopted for a small number of sniper rifles that could make good use of it as is.

In 2016 TrackingPoint introduced another version of its computerized scopes; NightDragon. This version allows for using an IR (infrared) spotlight with a range of nearly 200 meters and a scope with a sensor that makes the IR light visible to the shooter. Normally IR is not visible to human (or animal) eyes. The computerized scope tracks the target in the crosshairs and fires when the computer determines that a hit will be achieved. Targets can be moving as fast as 24 kilometers an hour. Costing $13,000 each, this is one of the few TrackingPoint scopes available for the civilian market. Most of their computerized

aiming systems are only for military or police organizations. The manufacturer sells TrackingPoint equipped rifles mainly to police organizations or a few wealthy hunters who don’t like to miss. TrackingPoint now provides a growing list of computerized scopes for ranges of 350-1,300 meters. Prices range from $10,000 to $17,000.

SMASH costs much less than the cheapest TrackingPoint system and can be used on a large number of rifles and pistols. SMASH is more rugged and was quickly adapted to shoot down small UAVs, be used at night, make videos and have 4x magnification. That version was modified to take down fire kites and balloons. There are other firms developing computer-controlled scopes and as time goes by these scopes will have more features, become cheaper and more reliable.

Scientists Discover a High-Performance, Low-Cost

Sodium-Ion BatteryBy GLENN ROBERTS JR., BERKELEY LAB FEBRUARY

28, 2018Scientists have discovered a novel chemical state of the

element manganese. This chemical state, first proposed about 90 years ago, enables a high-performance, low-cost sodium-ion battery that could quickly and efficiently store and distribute energy produced by solar panels and wind turbines across the electrical grid.

This direct proof of a previously unconfirmed charge state in a manganese-containing battery component could inspire new avenues of exploration for battery innovations.

X-ray experiments at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) were key in the discovery. The study results were published

Feb. 28 in the journal Nature Communications.

Scientists at Berkeley Lab and New York University participated in the study, which was led by researchers at Natron Energy, formerly Alveo Energy, a Palo Alto, California-based battery technology company.

The battery that Natron Energy supplied for the study features an unconventional design for an anode, which is one of its two electrodes. Compared with the relatively mature designs of anodes used in lithium-ion batteries, anodes for sodium-ion batteries remain an active focus of R&D.

The anode featured in this latest study is made up of a blend of elements – including manganese, carbon and nitrogen – that is chemically similar to the formula of the iron-containing paint pigment known as Prussian blue.

Manganese Enables High-Performance, Low-Cost Sodium-Ion Battery

The atomic structure of the anode material that achieved high performance in a sodium-ion battery. Sodium (Na) atoms and manganese (Mn) atoms are labeled. (Credit: Berkeley Lab)

“Typically, in lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, the anode is more often carbon-based,” said Wanli Yang a staff scientist at Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source, the source of X-rays that were used in the battery experiments.

But in this case, both of the battery’s electrodes utilize the same type of materials based on elements known as “transition metals” that are useful in chemistry because they can exhibit various charged states. The other electrode, called a cathode, contains copper, nitrogen, carbon, and iron.

“The very interesting part here is that both electrodes are based on the chemistry of transition metals in the same type of materials,” he added, with iron in the cathode and a special manganese chemistry in the anode.

“One of the direct benefits of utilizing such materials for both electrodes in the battery is that neither of the two electrodes fundamentally limits the power capability, cycle life, or cost of the device,” said Colin Wessells, CEO at Natron Energy. The battery outperforms the Department of Energy’s cycle-life and price targets for grid-scale energy storage, as the researchers report in their latest study.

Wessells noted that the battery is very stable, its materials are abundant, its overall cost is competitive with conventional lead-acid batteries, and it has a lesser environmental footprint than conventional batteries.

The battery has been shown to deliver up to 90 percent of its total energy in a very fast, five-minute discharge, and to retain about 95 percent of its discharge capacity for 1,000 cycles. It offers an alternative to gravity-based energy storage systems for electric grid, in which water is pumped uphill and then released downhill on demand to generate electricity.

Just how the battery achieves its high performance, though, had puzzled researchers.

There was speculation, dating back to a 1928 German-language journal article, that manganese could exist in a so-called “1-plus” or

“monovalent” state, which means that a manganese atom in this state loses only a single electron. This is unusual, as manganese atoms typically are known to give up two or more electrons, or no electrons, in chemical reactions, but not just one.

Such a novel chemical state would enable a voltage range that is useful for battery anodes. But there hadn’t been any measurements confirming this monovalent form of manganese.

The Natron Energy researchers studied the battery materials at Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience center, and then offered up some sample battery cells for study at the ALS.

The first round of X-ray experiments at the ALS, which used a technique called soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, appeared to show mainly the 2-plus form of manganese.

“We only caught a hint (of another form) in the initial tests, and had to rely heavily on theory to speculate about a different state,” said Andrew Wray at New York University, who performed the theoretical calculations.

Then the team turned to a newly built system at the ALS, dubbed in situ resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, or iRIXS. The technique, which provides a high-sensitivity probe of the internal chemistry of materials, showed a telltale contrast in the electrons during the battery’s charge and discharge cycles.

“A very clear contrast immediately shows up with RIXS,” Yang said. “We later realized that manganese 1-plus behaves very, very closely to the typical 2-plus state in other conventional spectroscopy,” which is why it had been difficult to detect for so many decades.

Wray added, “The analysis of the RIXS results not only confirms the manganese 1-plus state; it also shows that the special circumstances giving rise to this state make it easier

for electrons to travel in the material. This is likely why such an unusual battery electrode performs so well.”

Commercial prototypes based on the battery tested at the Lab entered customer beta testing earlier this year, Wessells noted. In addition to grid applications, Natron Energy is promoting the technology for data centers’ emergency power, and for heavy equipment such as electric forklifts, among other possible applications.

Yang said that the chemical puzzle solved in the latest study could inspire other R&D in new types of battery electrodes. “The operation of a battery could drive the emergence of atypical chemical states that do not exist in our conventional thinking. This basic understanding could trigger other novel designs, and open our eyes beyond our conventional wisdom” on electrode materials, he said.

“This study was like a perfect package, with combined industry, national lab, and university contributions,” Yang said.

Pumpkinhead and Professor Wogglebug on important matters. You may take the Sawhorse and the Red Wagon, and if you start soon you will be able to meet the Scarecrow and the strangers at Glinda’s palace.”

“Oh, thank you!” cried Dorothy, and went away to tell Betsy and to make preparations for the journey.

Chapter Twenty-Two The WaterfallGlinda’s castle was a long way from the mountains, but

the Scarecrow began the journey cheerfully, since time was of no great importance in the Land of Oz and he had recently made the trip and knew the way. It never mattered much to Button-Bright where he was or what he was doing; the boy was content in being alive and having good companions to share his wanderings. As for Trot and Cap’n Bill, they now found themselves so comfortable and free from danger, in this fine fairyland, and they were so awed and amazed by the adventures they were encountering, that the journey to Glinda’s castle was more like a pleasure trip than a hardship, so many wonderful things were there to see.

Button-Bright had been in Oz before, but never in this part of it, so the Scarecrow was the only one who knew the paths and could lead them. They had eaten a hearty breakfast, which they found already prepared for them and awaiting them on the table when they arose from their refreshing sleep, so they left the magic house in a contented mood and with hearts lighter and more happy than they had known for many a day. As they marched along through the fields, the sun shone brightly and the breeze was laden with delicious fragrance, for it carried with it the breath of millions of wildflowers.

At noon, when they stopped to rest by the bank of a pretty river, Trot said with a long-drawn breath that was much like a sigh:

“I wish we’d brought with us some of the food that was left from our breakfast, for I’m getting hungry again.”

in agricultural history, and spurred many of today’s full-line manufacturers. This will become readily evident as you study the accompanying timeline of “Ag Equipment Firsts.”

This project represents a “first,” best effort by the editors of Farm Equipment to uncover and report significant milestones in the evolution of farm machinery that have shaped agriculture throughout history. We’re aware that with each proclaimed “first” comes debates as to who really invented what and when. For example, while Cyrus McCormick is generally recognized as the inventor of the mechanical reaper, records show that Obed Hussey was awarded a patent for a reaper a year before McCormick. Hussey spent much of the rest of his life and nearly all of his fortune trying to prove it — to no avail.

The editors also wish to acknowledge the time and devoted to this project by Charles Glass, Glass Management Group, and Phil Needham, Needham Ag Technologies.

Timeline of Ag Equipment ‘Firsts’

September 23, 2009 | Posted in Manufacturer NewsSource: A Farm Equipment Staff ReportSince the dawn of time, man has continually used his

ingenuity to develop and perfect the tools needed to feed and clothe himself and those around him.

From soil-scratching sticks — the first farm “implements” — to satellites that provide signals to automatically guide high-powered tractors and combines, farm equipment has evolved through the ages to continually meet the food and clothing needs of Earth’s ever-growing population.

And as mankind advanced technologically, farmers and machine makers were among the first to adapt the breakthroughs to the implements and machinery of their trade. For those who call their life’s work farming, each innovation in agricultural equipment represents another step forward in meeting their only goals — produce more food to feed more people.

At the same time, no one has a more abiding respect for the land than those involved in agriculture — though it didn’t always seem that way. Poor farming practices and drought led to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and devastated millions of acres of fertile land. It taught us many lessons. Today, crop rotation, conservation tillage and new equipment aimed at minimizing soil and wind erosion assure that agriculture will not repeat mistakes of the past.

Through it all, the tools of farming continued to evolve, a process marked by temporary setbacks and enormous leaps forward.

The era when farm equipment moved beyond tools to “real” ag machinery was inaugurated in 1784 with the invention of the first stationary threshing machine. Developed by British farmer Andrew Meikle to help ease the backbreaking work of agriculture, it was a landmark invention that, while not achieving commercial success, provided more than a glimpse of where the industry was heading.

Ten years later, Eli Whitney unveiled the first hand-powered cotton gin, considered a marvel at the time because it was able to separate seeds, hulls and other unwanted materials from cotton after it is picked.

But it was Cyrus McCormick’s reaper, first demonstrated in 1831, that laid the foundation for the farm equipment industry we know today. This device, along with McCormick’s self-raking feature, allowed one man to cut 40 acres in a day compared with what 5 men could do by hand. Not only was it the machine that set McCormick apart from other inventors of his time, but it was also his unmatched product development, marketing and manufacturing innovations that created the model that others would follow for the next century or more — from J.I. Case to John Deere to Massey-Ferguson.

By the mid-1800s, “real” horsepower began to give way to “mechanical” horsepower as the portable steam “traction” engine quickly followed the development of the stationary steam engine. These developments heralded the coming of the tractor and farming would never again be the same. It was the tractor that brought each new innovation directly to the farmer’s field.

It was the genius and creative thinking from individual entrepreneurs that provided many of the greatest breakthroughs

The Scarecrow of Oz

By L. Frank Baum

ChapterTwenty-One

Dorothy, Betsy and Ozma

“She’s a dear little thing, and I’m sure nothing very bad will happen to her. The old sailor is a fine character, too, for he has never once grumbled over being a grasshopper, as so many would have done.”

When the Scarecrow was so nearly burned up the girls all shivered a little, and they clapped their hands in joy when the flock of Orks came and saved him.

So it was that when all the exciting adventures in Jinxland were over and the four Orks had begun their flight across the mountains to carry the mortals into the Land of Oz, Ozma called the Wizard to her and asked him to prepare a place for the strangers to sleep.

The famous Wizard of Oz was a quaint little man who inhabited the royal palace and attended to all the magical things that Ozma wanted done. He was not as powerful as Glinda, to be sure, but he could do a great many wonderful things. He proved this by placing a house in the uninhabited part of the Quadling Country where the Orks landed Cap’n Bill and Trot and Button- Bright, and fitting it with all the comforts I have described in the last chapter.

Next morning Dorothy said to Ozma:“Oughtn’t we to go meet the strangers, so we can show

them the way to the Emerald City? I’m sure that little girl will feel shy in this beautiful land, and I know if ‘twas me I’d like somebody to give me a welcome.”

Ozma smiled at her little friend and answered:

“You and Betsy may go to meet them, if you wish, but I can not leave my palace just now, as I am to have a conference with Jack

Scarcely had she spoken when a table rose up before them, as if from the ground itself, and it was loaded with fruits and nuts and cakes and many other good things to eat. The little girl’s eyes opened wide at this display of magic, and Cap’n Bill was not sure that the things were actually there and fit to eat until he had taken them in his hand and tasted them. But the Scarecrow said with a laugh:

“Someone is looking after your welfare, that is certain, and from the looks of this table I suspect my friend the Wizard has taken us in his charge. I’ve known him to do things like this before, and if we are in the Wizard’s care you need not worry about your future.”

“Who’s worrying?” inquired Button-Bright, already at the table and busily eating.

The Scarecrow looked around the place while the others were feasting, and finding many things unfamiliar to him he shook his head and remarked:

“I must have taken the wrong path, back in that last valley, for on my way to Jinxland I remember that I passed around the foot of this river, where there was a great waterfall.”

“Did the river make a bend, after the waterfall?” asked Cap’n Bill.

“No, the river disappeared. Only a pool of whirling water showed what had become of the river; but I suppose it is under ground, somewhere, and will come to the surface again in another part of the country.”

“Well,” suggested Trot, as she finished her luncheon, “as there is no way to cross this river, I s’pose we’ll have to find that waterfall, and go around it.”

“Exactly,” replied the Scarecrow; so they soon renewed their journey, following the river for a long time until the roar of the waterfall sounded in their ears. By and by they came to the waterfall itself, a sheet of silver dropping far, far down into a tiny lake which seemed to have no outlet. From the top of the fall, where they stood, the banks gradually sloped away, so that the descent by land was quite easy, while the river could do nothing but glide over an edge of rock and tumble straight down to the depths below.
