DIVINE REDEEMER SUPPORTS MISSIONS IN A BIG WAY

(From Left to Right: Pastor Schubert, District President John Wille, and Mr. Ed Eldridge)

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod is composed of 6,000 congregations throughout the United States. For ecclesiastical purposes, our Synod is organized into 35 District (or regional) Offices. We are in the South Wisconsin District of the L.C.M.S., which represents 215 churches in the southern half of our state. Through our District Office and our National Office in St. Louis (known as the ―International Center‖) our church body continues to support thousands of missions, both local, state-wide, national, and also globally. Together, with the other 2.6 million members of the LCMS, we can do much more than one church could ever do alone. I am thankful to you and to our Lord that recently, Divine Redeemer has TRIPLED our mission commitment to our beloved District and Synod. As a proper response to all that the Lord has graciously given us, your congregational leadership has taken the bold step to aggressively give outside of our own campus to the many worthwhile mission causes of our very own church body. At the conclusion of our fiscal year (June 30th,) we were blessed with a surplus of funds, which your Board of Directors has directed to mission work beyond our walls. This is a historic first and a great leap forward, both in terms of ending the year in the black, but also in giving surplus funds outside of our own walls. The picture above shows a very delighted District President (Dr. John Wille) and Mr. Eldridge, our Chief Operating Officer, and yours truly, presenting yet another mission check to support the faithful missionaries who were with us during our Sunday worship services in the recent past. Receiving support through this added gift are: Hmong Lutheran Outreach; International Lutheran Church of Zion; Free at Last Ministry; Haskell Light Ministry; and (while not administrated by the District) Living Hope International. All total, this was a supplemental mission check of $ 15,000, on top of our already tripled mission commitment made for our new fiscal year! Praise God for this outpouring of love and support! I am ecstatic that Divine Redeemer has ―turned the corner,‖ as it were, in supporting the important work which our District and Synod does in concert with its constituent congregations, of which Divine Redeemer is a vital part. Thanks for your continued faithful stewardship and your sacrificial financial support of missions within the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. May God bless and keep you all in His protective hands as we reach out with the Good News of salvation in Christ Jesus. Making a difference in things eternal!

Pastor Jeff

Meteorologically speaking, September is the first month of our autumn season - a time where God dazzles us with His creation in our part of the country. The leaves changing color is a gift that could only come from our Creator. As we are ushered into autumn and a season of change, much could be said about change at Divine Redeemer. Many physical changes have happened on our campus and if you haven’t noticed them, take yourself on a field trip to see how things continue to improve both inside and out at our house of worship. Before all of the physical changes to our campus one member of our congregation quipped, “What would we say if God showed up?” Although there is still work to be done, we can be proud of how our congregation has changed and is headed in the right direction. Change is not always easy for us as humans and it is most comforting to know that God does not change. From James 1:17 we read: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the

Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. The change Above and Beyond was created to do was put our congregation on a stable financial footing. However, it was also designed as equally important to change our hearts and minds as we deepen our relationship with Christ.

Our current campaign total continues to climb and has reached the amount of $722,126. Thank you to all who have contributed to this total and have in turn glorified God with your actions. May health and happiness abound in your homes this coming fall. -Above & Beyond Fulfillment Committee

THE TRAGEDY

Who cries for them? The who? Take a look. Since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion on demand, more than 50 MILLION innocent unborn babies have been killed in their mother's womb. The insensitivity to this American Holocaust matches the Jewish Holocaust under Hitler. In their situation a dictator used the gas chambers, whereas in our case it is the babies’ mothers who make the decision. Doesn't anyone care? The recent deaths from shootings in our country have caused great concern, but who cries for the endless list of children killed every day here in the USA, in their mother's womb?

A Thank You from

Lynne Buelo

I would like to say a huge thank you for the wonderful, warm farewell dinner on Aug. 11. There were so many kind words and gestures, both on and off the stage that night and I will always remember the love I felt in that room. I’ve never been roasted before so when both Mike Oldenburg and Karen Lippert were involved, I knew I was

in for a bumpy ride. I felt a roller coaster of emotions, from laughter to tears, as I treasured the music from the Spirit Singers, One Voice, the brass quintet and the choirs closing blessing. The words of Doug, Tom, my beautiful daughters and my wonderful husband made my heart so full. But “The Sound of Bue-sic Musical” from Mark & Amy Bronner & family was just astounding!! Thank you for the generous gift of money. It will be used in our new home (remember: mi-la-la-re or 3662 Sapphire Lane, Palm Harbor, FL 34684) and the gift from the staff and faculty expresses perfectly “Then Sings my Soul--How Great Thou Art”.

The words I shared at the dinner are what I would like to share with you again:

DR friends you need to know for sure one thing is true. God’s blessed me with 12 wonderful years spending time with folks like you.

David passed the baton to me and I broke it once or twice.

But that wouldn’t ever have happened if the tenors were being nice!!

The Christmas Concert consumed my mind from May ‘til concert’s eve, It always made me nervous to see what you characters had up your sleeve.

We’ve been through African lyrics, pink bow ties and garbage cans as drums,

No one knew the men’s choir back row, was for those who can only hum!

Missouri Synod monks, or drums that rumble the floor. Liberty Express and Dick Clark’s Rock around the Clock

Begging the Blues Brothers for more.

Bells with ribbons, camels dancing, major hoopla you see. The challenge of doing something bizarre was such a thrill to me!!

The only thing I didn’t do were laser light shows with fire.

But a concert without a stink eye moment is what YOU probably would most desire.

I’ve treasured my time with each of you by serving our Lord and King

God is good—so very good, forever let His praises sing!!! In Christian love,

Lynne

Divine Redeemer Lutheran Church 1972-2012 Celebrating 40 Years of God‘s Mission

Our Stained Glass Windows Inspire Worshippers

Divine Redeemer dedicated our current church building in 1980. But it wasn‘t until 1982 that the stained glass was installed. So for 2 years, the church windows were ordinary glass. On sunny Sundays, it was blinding and hard to see the pastor. A committee, chaired by the late Bernice Brandenburg, worked with renowned Conrad Schmidt Studios in New Berlin, Wisconsin on the stained glass design and installation.

Our windows focus on Christ, with Jesus as the main figure in the 20-foot-high center panel behind the altar. ―We wanted the face of Christ to be a strong face, yet a kindly face…the hands welcoming, not to look as though they are pushing away,‖ Bernice said. The committee spent countless hours perfecting the design sketches. Gospel writers Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are featured on the side panels. Along the sides of the sanctuary, the six windows depict the life of Christ, from His birth through the resurrection. Glass from Around the Globe Glass from Germany, France, England, West Virginia and Indiana was used to create the windows. Fine details like facial features were painted on the glass pieces and fired in a kiln before assembly. One family generously donated the funds for the three large altar panels and the two bell tower windows.

The round tower window you see when entering the church is Luther‘s Rose symbol (left) and was made by former DR member J a n e B o l t . Donations from

other member families covered the cost of the side windows. Next time you‘re in church, take a closer look at the windows. Let them remind you of the promise of our salvation through Jesus Christ-just as they have been doing for Divide Redeemer worshippers the past 30 years!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Jesus says in Mark 10:14, 16(NIV), "Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. And he took them in his arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them." This is an incredible privilege - to be part of leading children and their families and friends to a personal saving relationship with Jesus Christ. Operation Christmas Child volunteers are a vital link in fulfilling the Great Commission. Together, we are reaching the nations and we are having fun while doing it.

November 17th will be our big day for the Operation Christmas Child Packing Party Festival. We want to make it bigger and better than ever since it is the 10th year it will be held at Divine Redeemer. Last year we collected and packed 7,000 shoeboxes. With it being the 10th anniversary, do you think we can shoot for 10,000 boxes? We can't do it without your help and donations! You all have been a big part of Operation Christmas Child and we appreciate it very much, but not as much as the children who receive these shoeboxes and receive Jesus Christ for the very first time. We have something big happening at our festival this year: a young man named Ted, who is 21 and originally from Russia, will be spending the weekend with us and will speak to us during the festival about his life in an orphanage in Russia and how he received a shoebox and his life changed forever. Also, Terry Williams will tell us about her time in the Dominican Republic and about the children who received shoeboxes. It is not too early to start collecting things. We are in dire need of toothpaste, toothbrushes, washcloths as well as school supplies and small toys for girls and boys. We also need donations for the Silent Auction. There will be planning meetings in September. If you have any questions please call Terry Williams 414-254-3651.

Interestingly enough, our new fifth grade teacher, Miss Karli Walsen, became known to the school‘s principal, Mike Oldenburg, through strong references and a reputation for being one of the top in her Concordia University class! Though she received her Elementary Education degree with minors in Math, Science, and Theology from Concordia University- Wisconsin, her Christian upbringing began in Cleveland, Ohio. Miss Walsen‘s mom and sister still both reside in Ohio and will miss her greatly as she begins her teaching career here at Divine Redeemer. One of their favorite things to do together is traveling as a family and a short trip to Wisconsin to visit Karli will surely be in their future itineraries. Teaching for Miss Walsen began with influence from excellent teachers in her own life that not only inspired her but helped direct her decisions to pursue a teaching vocation. Miss Walsen met all of her 5th grade students by completing home visits in the weeks before school started and she has thoroughly enjoyed getting her new classroom ready for the new school year. Miss Walsen has enjoyed getting to know the wonderful school and church staff members, is looking forward to forming new relationships with students and families, and beginning the new school year!

Divine Redeemer Lutheran School Reaches Out

to the Dominican Republic

―Mission‖ is defined in one definition as a group of people sent to a country to represent their organization. Another definition states that ―mission‖ is a calling that someone believes is their duty to carry out, one that they attach special importance and devotes special care to completing. The idea that mission work brings help or care to those less fortunate is always ironic in that those offering the care often receive more in return than they give. Such is the case when a team from Divine Redeemer Lutheran School sent four of its school faculty members (Principal Mike Oldenburg, Pastor Kurt Wenzelburger, and teachers-Dale Kleba and Mary Kuehl) to Concordia Lutheran School (―Escuela Luterana La Concordia‖) in Palmar Arriba of the Dominican Republic.

From June 24th – 28th, this mission team left from O‘Hare International via American Airlines, landed quickly in Miami, Florida and traveled on to Santiago, Dominican Republic. To arrive at Concordia Lutheran School, the team had to travel into the hot mountainous area of the country where the school (grades kindergarten through 8th grade) is located. Divine Redeemer‘s team was greeted by the principal from St. Michael‘s Lutheran School, Fort Myers, Florida which is the school responsible for originally building and presently paying the salaries of the staff at Concordia Lutheran School. They were generously expedited through airport procedures, avoiding long lines and ultimately found rest in Santiago. Interestingly enough, an armed guard would take post each night at the hotel where the team stayed. Likewise, when traveling via vehicles to the school, the anxious team noticed that there were few stop signs or stop

lights, and intersections became a game of ―chicken‖ with the fastest car making it through first. The mission team was ultimately responsible for staff development and teaching the Concordia faculty the ―Love and Logic‖ approach to discipline (which is practiced at Divine Redeemer Lutheran School). Divine Redeemer Lutheran School is recognized as a school strong in the Love and Logic approach to discipline which made them the perfect school to train this new faculty. Mike Oldenburg had two main mission goals for this trip. The first goal was to develop positive relationships and the second, to be effective in training the members of this particular school. Mike felt both of these goals were successfully accomplished and the Concordia faculty loved the Love and Logic approach. Even with the language barrier, the mission team built strong relationships with their new friends and even attended a Wednesday night worship service. Pastor Wenzelburger was introduced to their congregation that evening and through an interpreter was able to share a few words. The team was able to enjoy some of the culture and sites of the country when they visited a national monument, a local market and visited a group home with mentally handicapped children. Though Love and Logic was successfully taught to the faculty at Concordia, it was DR‘s teachers that made lifetime friendships and increased their own ability and appreciation for the Love and Logic approach. The mission trip was so successful that a second visit is planned for October 2012 to continue the training. The Divine Redeemer team would like to thank Mrs. Niki Cairns for the time she spent teaching them Spanish and translating their powerpoints into Spanish!

FACTS & FIGURES

Summer has flown by with the speed of a brand new jet airplane. The children are now back at school and finding the building looking very fresh. Over the summer all carpets were steam cleaned, all tile floors were polished, twelve classrooms were completely repainted, a number of additional classrooms were partially repainted, and all of the corridors, the school cafeteria, the school lobby, the church narthex and the Fellowship Hall were repainted!

We also spruced up the playground with some new certified playground chips in addition to completely redoing the two 180 foot long islands at the far east end of the campus. The beautiful gymnasium maple floor was also refreshed with a professionally applied new coating of ―Sport Kote‖, an outstanding water-based gym floor coating that is actually produced not too far from our campus.

The students are now also greeted in the school lobby with a new large television screen mounted on the school office lobby wall which displays vital information about Divine Redeemer‘s activities.

In our spare time, we built two new offices; one for the Minister of Music and the other for the Director of Communications. These new offices are in the fellowship hall area.

When we were not working on the facility we were working with our auditors. As we have long promised, all of our financial and business dealings for the entire fiscal year from July 1, 2011 thru June 30, 2012 are being fully audited by a CPA firm recommended by the South Wisconsin District Office-LCMS. The entire audited report will be presented to the congregation upon its completion.

We still have a number of cemetery plots that we need to sell. We have plots for sale at Highland Memorial Park in New Berlin, Wisconsin Memorial Park on West Capitol Drive in Brookfield, and at Valhalla Memorial Park on North 91st Street. We will make you a wonderful deal on these plots. If you know of any one that might have an interest, we would appreciate a call. We really want to convert these plot deeds into a payment on the mortgage.
